DS is 2.5 and dropped a really well times f bomb at the CVS. An old lady laughed.. it's NYC so people feel a little different about cussing. We tried just pretending like he didn't say anything, but now I think we need to go the explanation route. Also, I might just have foul mouthed kids....

Luckily DS hasn't picked any of my swears yet. Not sure how, lol. But today he got a happy meal toy when we stopped at a rest stop and he told us he was going to name it "Titty"😂. At first I was like, "oh, Teddy" and he's yelling at me like I didn't hear him, "No, TITTY Mommy." 😂😂. I don't normally care all that much about swearing, but he was just killing me with that.

Fudge or fudgemonkies for the F word.
Shiz or Shi-kes for S word.
All the rest are the standard replacements - darn, gosh, dang, etc. I gave up swearing for Lent when I was 14 and it stuck, which is good because I've worked with children since I was 16 :)

@PinkElephant: oh- my then 3 year old used to use this exasperated under her breath voice to say "goddammit!" It was exactly the way I would say it when I got really annoyed at something. I have obviously cleaned up my act!!

No real advice, I just try not to curse and use shoot or darn insteadof what I want to say. Or a friend convinced her kid she said bucket instead of the F words that rhyme with it.

My clever niece was making up food word replacements for curses last year-I wish I could remember them all. I know she said
"Oh For peanut butter's sake!" And "Oh mayonnaise!"

Usually I just say that's not a nice word and drop it. Even if it's repeated a few times if you don't make a big deal they find something else soon enough.

DD says "oh shit-shoot!" because I try to correct myself whenever I say it. She also liked to call other drivers "donkeys" when we are in the car since DH has a habit of saying "what a donkey" when he's driving.

D has been saying "pickle sticks" lately which I think is hysterical. So like if he drops something, he says "Oh pickle sticks!" So far, the only "curse" he picked up is Jesus Christ. So, not a terrible one, but it would certainly get him a major side-eye if he used it at his very Christian daycare!

Oh man, going through this also! My 2-1/2 yr old correctly uses Damnit. He said it yesterday when he couldn't get his pj's off. I don't think either DH or I say it often at all so I'm so surprised he picked it up!

I will have to try some of the above tricks.

@MamaG: Similar to this, DH's friends learned that kids normally remember the last word that was said, so if someone slips and curses, they say "Potato" really quick to sort of cover it up.

Might be too late but someone told us to say peanut butter as a distraction. We tend to use it when our extended family uses a word we don't like. We follow up their word with peanut butter.

@youboots: quesadilla IS really fun to say 🙂And church camp, eek!

@gingerbebe: omg, hippos! I love it. Nuggets is good, too. Wouldn't work for me since I call our ten month old "nugget" sometimes, but I like the idea of exploring food options, haha.

Might also try yelling in another language. The Spanish words for snow cone and jigsaw puzzle are fun (I was inspired by quesadilla), and I don't think my kids know them, haha.

I'm so relieved that this is not a unique situation. My family is very conservative - I've NEVER heard my parents say anything remotely curse-like. My mother in law openly admits to accidentally teaching DH to say "shit" when he was little, but the f word or any GOD/Jesus related explanation would upset her, I'm sure.

DH uses "carrots" or "hippos" instead of terms like assholes or bitches. It's so random and hilarious and DS1 looks at him like he's nuts, but laughs. DS1 is also randomly obsessed with the word cockroach and has been calling people that and cackling.

My brother uses the word "nuggets" for shit. Like when he stubs his toe he will scream nuggets.

I've started saying "Jesus and the 12 disciples!!" Instead of Jesus Christ when I'm yelling but I don't know how much better that is.

DS1 likes big words and if I overannunciate them and exaggerate he really picks up on it. We've tried to swap the f word with:

Enormous
Humongous
Absolutely
Fantastically
Fabulously
Outrageously

@Foodnerd81: yes! It's the -ing part that horrifies DH.

Any non-curse words you've tried to replace unsavory ones with yourself in hopes they catch on? Because, yeah...unfortunately I'm sure they heard it from me at some point.

DD used every bad word on our first day of family church camp in July. It was awful and hilarious. We just redirect/don't react. Nothing like your 2 year old saying the F word in front of the pastor 😬 Shrug. She can also say quesadilla and that's not possible.

@PinkElephant: my daughter went through a phase of using the F word. Correctly. I was both horrified and impressed. Like she threw up in bed and when we came in she looked at us and goes, "I made a f-ing mess!"

We mostly ignored it or lightly said "that's not a nice thing to say" but didn't make a big deal out of it and she moved on. Oh and she totally got it from me. :meh:

@littlejoy: yeah...that's the one they're working with. DH reacted the first time one of them said it, :::sigh:::. I had been trying to act confused and say "I think you mean 'funky'"...Good point about owning up to making a mistake if we say something we shouldn't.

Glad someone else has been through it. The principal was impressed with DD2's vocabulary when she used the word "stethoscope" at a school visit at 2.5. Dropping F-bombs...probably slightly less impressive. :bummed:

My 3 year old said "fuck" at school, soooo ...

When she tests out cuss words, we just make it not a big deal. "Oh man, I shouldn't have said that word. It's a word for adults, but you can say xyz instead." ... she's receptive. I've heard her say "shit" before and then quickly correct herself to say "shoot".

My best advice is to just not let your kids know it's a big deal to you. Or they'll probably never stop! :silly:

And are enjoying using it..correctly. Oops. :( I'd be pretty embarrassed if they said it at school in a few weeks (we are new to the school), so I'm trying to distract them by using silly exclamations (phooey! Fiddlesticks!) as often as possible in hopes that something else catches their fancy and sticks in place of this one.

Any good ones for me to try? Can be real or made up, the goofier the better. Bonus points if it's something they don't know and I could convince them it is a "bad word".
