@MaisyMay: My mum (type 2) has had a really hard time with hypos. She landed herself in hospital about two yrs ago because she woke in the night with a hypo that was so bad she couldn't stand up so she shuffled down the stairs on her bum, crawled into the kitchen and proceeded to panic-drink enough energy drink to almost put her in a coma. The ambulance crew had to break her front door down and she was in hospital for a week on an insulin drip. Scary stuff.

@ShootingStar: Oh of course, absolutely! Insulin is completely 100% essential if you need it. And boy, if you need it, no amount of fannying around with diet can help.

I hated having GD too! Especially since it was over the holidays. But I guess one positive to having it was I barely put on weight in my 3rd trimester and lost it all pretty quickly once I had dd.

@Mrs Hedgehog: I feel you. I am diabetic, type 2 and this pregnancy has been a beast. I think we finally have the right combo, but it is check sugar in a.m., 2 shots [well, 1 shot but 2 insulins) and a pill, check an hour after breakfast, snack, shot before lunch, check sugar hour later, snack, no shot before dinner but check insulin hour after eating, shot and pill before bed.

If it is any encouragement, I went from all of my numbers being 200 and higher to finally getting on the under 90 fasting most of the time and under 130 an hour after eating. Now I am worrying about lows and even wear a bracelet (not a fan) because I take public transportation a lot and when I have a low I have a very hard time articulating what is wrong. DH and friends know what to look for though. :)

If it is any consolation, with LO1 I was able to go all of the way to 39 weeks before they induced, and am hoping for the same this time.

I'm sorry! I had GD too so I totally know how you feel. Hang in there! I always tried to focus on the silver lining that it's forcing me to eat healthy and I also barely gained weight after started GD diet.

@Cherrybee: I think that is their major concern. My fasting is high (around 100) and my post meal can be high (around 140-170) but it isn't always as consistent. Heck, my 3 AM's are between 80-100 which is high. But my levels are always high and they are sky high, just slightly higher than the 90 or 120 limit so they just need to bring them down a little vs a lot. Right now they are just being stubborn.

@Cherrybee: If you're constantly fighting against high numbers you probably won't need to worry much about lows. You start out with a low dose and then it gets increased if you're still getting highs. Controlling with diet and pills is definitely much better, but if you're not really controlling it, then you need to do something else.

@ShootingStar: @Mrs Hedgehog: Also, with insulin, you have the added worry of your blood sugar dropping dangerously low too. Its much better if you can control it with diet+pills.

@gracecat: @NavyRN2012 Gyburide. They are looking at possibly adding Metformin. I am doing everything perfect on my diet. I am super strict about what I eat (i mean, measuring cups for everything strict) but my hormones are just causing a bigger insulin resistance than diet alone can handle.

@ShootingStar: They said with the kind of resistance they are seeing, they prefer pills, and honestly, so would I. I have a HUGE fear of needles. Just testing alone is stressful sometimes.

@Mamasig: Just a little bit of hope for you, I was on insulin with #2, and only diet controlled with #3. I was actually told to only take my BS once a day (in the morning) with my third. SO much better!

OP: I'm sorry you're going through such a rough time. What med are you on?

Why are you taking so many pills all day long? Honestly, it's so much easier to just get put on insulin. When I had GD I took insulin at night, and then at dinner time.

Sorry! I had GD with my second and expect I'll have it again now that I'm pregnant with my 3rd. I heard it's harder to control each pregnancy so I'm dreading how it will be this time!

@Mrs Hedgehog: I had GD with my first pregnancy, and I'm pregnant now. Dreading taking the GTT and getting those results. That scheduling/planning is just a beast. I ended up on insulin with my first because my morning numbers would not come down no matter what I did (short of going for a run in the middle of the night). The anxiety over numbers and what the doctors would say at each appointment was awful. Sigh. On the plus side, at least I didn't gain too much weight and was eating healthier!

Sending hugs.

I had GD with my first and I'm having a GTT a week tomorrow with this pregnancy - at 15 weeks. I didn't eat at strict tines but I basically put myself on the Atkins diet and I hear you on the carb content of everything!

Hang in there. You can do it!

I had GD with both pregnancies and hated the schedule and strict eating. I hated being yelled at by the doctors and having them undermine me. It was horrible and one of the reasons (among others) that I cannot go through another pregnancy. I was able to control my GD with diet, but it was so hard and involved changing everything about my eating habits. I hated carrying around my meter and having to poke myself 4 times a day. Oh and the stupid appointments! I had to go to maternal fetal 3x a week (extra monitoring for low estimated weight) plus once a week at my OB. Ugh.

The bright side is that there are only 6 weeks left. It might feel like a long time, but it'll pass quickly. Then you'll have a baby to cuddle and make it all worth it.

Since being diagnosed with GD I have realized just how many carbs are in EVERYTHING, how to read labels like a crazy person, and how to live by a freaking timer/alarm. Aside from my super strict meal plan my day looks like this, even on my weekends

5:30-wake up and spend 10 minutes hating being awake, check my blood sugar. Curse at the high results.

5:40-make breakfast and take my first pill.

6:00-take my second pill and eat breakfast.

8:00-test blood sugar.

9:00-snack

12:30-lunch

2:30-test blood sugar

3:30-snack

6:10-take two pills

6:30-dinner

8:30-test blood sugar

9:00-two pills and a snack, pass out from exhaustion.

3:00 am- check blood sugar (luckily this is only for a week when they change my RX... Again)

This doesn't include any work schedule or caring for a two year old... Can I have this baby yet?

I was also just informed that if my next week they don't see some improvement in my numbers, I get to add a 7th pill at a completely different time!

I just felt the need to rant/share. You're welcome.
