As soon as she learned to roll, she started sleeping on her belly. I figure if thats how she wants to sleep, then fine. At this point, she's strong and mobile enough to move if theres an issue.

If she keeps doing it and she's sleeping this way, I think it's ok. You can always get the Angelcare Baby Monitor where it tracks the movement of your baby's breathing and alerts you if there hasn't been any movement. They have it on No Better Deal for about $50.

Most babies prefer to sleep on their belly. The pressure on their stomach is soothing.

@chrispygal: back is best until they can flip over by themselves from their back to belly and vice versa

I start with LO on his back but he flips himself to belly. He's 8 months old and actually uses his crib as his mini wrestling arena to battle his lovey.. but that's a different story..

When my son settles himself to sleep, he often ends up on his belly, and often sleeps longer than when I put him in the crib totally konked out on his back. Like some others, he kind of gradually started sleeping on his side more, then belly more. The first few times he slept on his belly he kind of face planted and made me nervous, but after a bit, he's really good at turning his head completely to one side or the other.

I asked our ped about this last week, and he said it's ok, just always put them down on their back, and let them settle themselves how they want to. He also said at 6 months, which I think your LO is too, the risk of sids is extremely small.

Back IS best, but it's ok to let them sleep on their stomach once they have have proper head control or they can roll over. DD started sleeping on her stomach around 5 or 6 months.

As soon as she was done with swaddling at 5.5 months, she became a belly/side sleeper. She was a solid belly sleeper for a good 2 months and has recently become a side sleeper. Once she could get there on her own I just left her.

my LO is trying but gets stuck on her side. my ped said that once she can get herself to her belly, I can leave her like that.

I'll probably be nervous too, though, because when she gets sleepy on her belly she face plants and won't turn her face to the side!

Mine! In fact it looks like he is in the fetal position, but instead of laying on his side, he is sleeping on his knees and face...

Our DD is the same! She was always content sleeping on her back but just recently she has converted to a belly sleeper. Me and hubby are both belly sleepers so we can't really blame her!

Mine. I can't keep him off of his belly, and I've tried...even if I wait until he's asleep to try to flip him back over he immediately rolls back onto his tummy. Hell, these days I can barely keep him on his back for diaper changes.

I was really paranoid about it the first few nights, but I know he's strong enough to roll back on to his back or push himself up, so I'm not worried. Even though I sometimes obsessively stare at his back on the video monitor until I can see he's breathing.

My LO has just mastered rolling over at will, and ever since she does not want to sleep on her back! I spent one night constantly flipping her over and have just resigned myself to the fact that she wants to be on her belly. Either that, or I will never sleep. I will admit I'm a nervous wreck and check on her a couple times a night and have also removed the bumper after finding her on her side, face close to the bumper one night. I'm trying not to be neurotic, but all I can think of is "back is best".

I'm curious how common this is? How many other LO's are belly sleepers?
