My lo used to do that too. I didn't do anything about it until she also started hitting the dogs face.. than I knew I had to fix it. I just told her no and pulled her hand away. Worked pretty quickly.

DS was a bit older, but was doing the same thing; hitting me in the face. Sometimes he was doin it out of anger or frustration, but other times he thought it was funny. When I would hold his hands he started trying to bite me.

I just sit him down by my feet. I leave him there about 30-60 seconds, or until he asks to be picked up by raising his arms. I'd pick him up, calmly say "you were in timeout because you hit mommy. we don't hit people. I love you." Then I give him a hug and kiss. He doesn't really get what I am saying, but I wanted to be consistent from the very beginning and have the process be second nature by the time he could understand. He's 18 months old now and starting to get it. Sometimes if he was mad I would go to pick him up and he'd turn away or try to hit me again. If he did that, I'd let him sit on the floor longer. I don't leave him but I don look at him and I focus on something else for that minute or so. It's worked and he hits a lot less often. Now it's usually only when he's really tired.

@JustlikeHeaven: ah ok! I think the key thing is to reinforce that association. If you pick her up after 10-15 seconds, I think that's fine. If she hits you again, it's another chance to build that association. It works itself out pretty quickly, usually!

@mrbee: sorry! On the ground, if she is crying? I just know her and she will probably cry.. but I guess I should try it first. She is really determined and when she is doing something and we move her away or move the item away she is quick to let out some cries... but we just let her and she quickly forgets and stops crying. So I guess I just answered my own question.

@mrbee: Oh I never thought of doing that! I am pretty sure she will begin to cry right away.. since she usually does when I try and keep her hand from my face.
How long would you make them stay?

I would put her on the ground right away after she does that... so she learns to associate that act with its natural consequence!

My LO is 6 months old and for some reason she likes to smack! She usually smacks MY FACE! I have never seen her do this to her dad and it seems like the more I say "no we dont hit faces" she does it even more and faster.
I think she is too little to understand?
but is there something I should be doing to correct this other than just trying to stop her little hand?!
or is she just exploring and should I let her? I mean some hurt for a 6 month old!
