I think the swimming/Hylands/Motrin combo did the trick! J slept through the night!

Hallelujah!

I've been giving her teethers all day and so far she's been much better behavior-wise. Hoping for another good night tonight... then maybe I will feel human again! :)

Thank you all so much. I really appreciate the support and it's so helpful to hear about your experiences.

Fortunately, when I picked her up from daycare today they said she'd been really good. I'd brought in a teether this morning and they said she used it a lot and didn't try to bite anyone. She was really cute at pickup and went around hugging all the other kids unprompted.

I took her to the ped and she said her ears and throat looked fine. She felt it was teething + normal toddler stuff. She said she felt Hylands was safe to give.

We went to the store and picked up Hylands, Motrin, a new silicone feeder (that I filled with frozen blueberries), other teethers, and a pacifier. The pacifier is probably a really bad idea, but I am so desperate for something to soothe her in the night. She seemed pretty excited about the pacifier, though I noticed she was chewing it more than anything. I'm only going to let her have it in her crib and only until this craziness passes.

I took her to the pool and let her swim for 90 min tonight, so hopefully she will sleep. She always takes great naps when we go to the pool in the morning, so fingers crossed.

Thanks again everyone.

I would take her in just to rule anything else out-- it's hard when they are small to know what's going on sometimes, and a big change in mood and behavior like that can indicate so many different things. It is also (definitely) possible that it's just the teeth. Ellie had a horrid time with teething, and the only times Lorelei has ever woken screaming in the night and unable to be consoled by anything it has been when teething. Usually with Lorelei, though, we won't know anything is going on or that she even has teeth coming in until that happens, because during the day she will be fine. If she wakes like that at night we give Tylenol. Both girls have also been little bitey-monsters when teething. I usually stay calm, don't make a huge deal out of it, but also reinforce that it's something we can't do to people. Maybe have a few teethers or cold things around for those moments so you can have an acceptable alternative. With both girls the biting has passed quickly and without much issue as soon as the teeth are through.

Good luck-- it sounds like you are both having a rough go of things right now!

Awwww so sorry. Hope she gets some relief soon and mama gets a break too. That's so thoughtful of you to want to be there for your sister. Hopefully, your DD is back to normal in a few days so you don't have to cancel your trip. Yes, I would take her in to check and rule out an ear infection.

@Silva: We've actually done this on particularly bad days. We'd start with Tylenol for the faster relief...four hours in (Tylenol lasts 4-6 hours) we would give a dose of Advil/Motrin to get us through the rest of the day or at night. Our pediatrician gave us that tip when we were just out of options.

@78h2o: My lo seemed to have a rougher than usual teething time with the canines. Combined with the typical toddler stuff that sets in around now it sounds like a lot on your plate with your LO. Like others have said it can't hurt to take her in to the ped if you can get time off or arrange that. My 20 month old has been going through a very whiny, fussy, grouchy phase too. Everything sets her off and so far I'm chalking it up to toddlerhood and praying that's all it is. Hugs to you. <3

I'm sorry- this sounds terrible. For what its worth, my husband is a doctor and he told me you can give tylenol and motrin at the same time because they work totally differently on different receptors (or something. I don't understand, I just trust him). We've had better luck with motrin for teething.

We have a good relationship with our ped and I think if something like this had been going on for a long time I'd take her in to at least get some advice.

The phase could be over before you know it, but its been going on for awhile so it wouldn't hurt to check!

@78h2o: canines and molars were like this for us. canines were a b, they took forever!! to my understanding, tylenol works faster, ibuprofen/motrin works longer. both are for pain, but I hear ibuprofen is better for swelling. my LO responds better to motrin. I buy the target brand berry flavor, she loves it - and non staining!

I would call ped to be safe cause i'm paranoid. I hope she feels better soon !:(

I would take her in just to be sure- could be ear infection or could just be teething badly, but I would do it for peace of mind and just to see if your doc has any tips. I also agree with @MsLipGloss, things changed around SO quickly in toddler land, I wouldnt make any decisions right this instant...I hope LO is feeling better soon, for both of your sakes!

This is us right now!! L is going on 17 months, and just such a mess. At first I thought our recent trip broke her, but now I'm thinking it was half coincidence to her age and her development. Her 4 canines are coming in, she just had an ear infection (on antibiotics at the moment), and she is just so cranky and whiny - what happened to my sweet carefree girl?! She seriously freaked out when a 6 month old baby touched her... she sees her everyday!

She's also started waking up screaming, and the only thing that's worked for us so far is giving her a cup of water. She just drinks it/plays with it/cuddles it and goes back to sleep by herself.

This is not my favorite age so far...

@78h2o: This is how my 18 month old acts when teething — bitey, cranky, screaming at night, not eating. We go with tylenol or advil (yes, motrin is ibuprofen), and we watch the aquarium channel for a few minutes which helps distract her if she's really inconsolable.

Hope she feels better soon!

S's canines were the WORST teeth so far. He was doing all of the same things your LO is doing (aside from biting kids at day care...he would just bite me instead). I definitely think it's teeth.

We would use Children's Advil to help with teeth pain. It lasts longer and would give longer relief at night especially. Night time is when kids' teeth move around the most (per S's pediatrician) so that's why their sleep is so disrupted.

Hope things start to look up!

@Mamaof2: I gave her Tylenol before bed and then gave her a dose of ibuprofen about 4 hrs later. My husband thought we should try to dose her before the Tylenol wore off, so I gave it to her while she was still sleeping (she sort of woke up for a second to take it but went back to sleep). Is Motrin the same as ibuprofen? She still woke up those about an hour later and then 2 hours hours after that.

I'm so sorry, this sounds so stressful! I don't really have any advice because we're not at 18 months yet, but I don't think there's anything wrong with taking her in to rule out an ear infection! Sometimes it's just nice to hear someone say everything's fine, it'll pass. <3

FWIW, my LO gets really bitey and cranky when he's getting a tooth. and if she's getting 4, I'm sure that has to be a contributing factor!

I'm not sure of the best place to post this...

Something is going on my 18 mo old LO. She is just having a really hard time all around. I am so sleep deprived, stressed, and exasperated.

For the past 2 weeks, she has been waking up multiple times a night and screaming. Last night I got about 3 hrs of sleep, 2 hours the night before, 3 the night before that. I am barely able to function at work.

I've tried everything... rocking her, patting her back, bottles, CIO, co-sleeping... nothing is working. Last night she literally cried for more than 2 hours straight after I'd tried everything else. That is not really like her. She didn't even want me to rock her. I tried Tylenol, ear drops, etc.

She definitely has 4 teeth coming in (canines), so that might be it. It's also possible she is going through a growth spurt.

During the day, she is cranky and out of control. She is suddenly really picky about eating and is throwing food at every opportunity. Tantruming left and right. Yesterday at daycare, she bit 2 children (she had done that once before, and others have bitten her). When she came home, she was like a little piranna trying to bite me. I kept telling her no, putting her in a quick time out, redirecting her, etc. I do think it may be her teeth as she did spend awhile biting on a frozen teether when I told her to bite that instead.

I am SO exhausted. Do you think it would be worth taking her to the pediatrican to see if they can find anything wrong with her? I thought maybe she could have an ear infection because she's had a cold (though she doesn't have a fever) and we also go swimming a lot (so maybe an outer ear infection). Any other ideas??

I have a trip planned to TX in 2 weeks to be present for the birth of my sister's baby. I was hoping to be able to help with cooking and caring for my nephew so she could focus on the baby (her husband has to work), but I'm worried that if this continues I am going to need to cancel. I was really looking forward to seeing my family, but I feel like with the way she is right now she'd just cause my sister's family stress :(
