@MamaJ: ok, 1-2 weeks is manageable. I can tell she's already feeling better. She's nursing again and eating fine. I took this today when she was sticking it out while playing - isn't as long as I thought and I can tell it's healing!

[attach=2480/13/mthxmv.400x600.image.jpg]
Also, it looks like it maybe isn't cut all the way to the side, so that's good.

@78h2o: maybe a week or two? It was definitely hard o eat and drink. I also had a lisp for a few days ;) the broken nose was much more painful and distracted me from the tongue. Glad she got some sleep and is eating a bit!

@BabyBoecksMom: you are so sweet, thank you. sorry about your LOs boo boo. :( Never fun to see your LO bleeding.

@sorrycharlie: glad to hear your brother was okay!

@oliviaoblivia: @mrskc: @Mrs. Confetti: @NovBaby1112: @boiledpnut: @Mrs. High Heels: @maybebaby: @Kimberlybee @autumnlove: @cascademom: Thank you all for your kind words! The support was really helpful.

@scg00387: Thank you! I was able to get a little milk and water in her via syringe.

@MamaJ: so glad to hear your injury healed okay. Was it super painful? How long did it take to heal, do you remember?

@mrs. wagon: so I did this and the cold things worked well... she sucked on ice chips in a silicone teether. She still refused to nurse after that, but she did take a little bit of bottle. I used the fastest flow nipples I had to help her out! OMG - so sorry to hear that Wagon Jr. bit his tongue too. :( Ugh, it TOTALLY makes your heart sink to see your little one bleeding. :( Sorry, mama. I hope he is feeling okay today.

@T-Mom: Thanks for sharing... I'm glad I'm not the only one. You are right though... we're doing the best we can.

@MrsF: No, f/u appointment was scheduled... now that I think of it, I don't know why... probably they the ped thought I would follow up with ENT, but ENT was kind of blaise about the whole thing. Maybe I will check with her ped and see if they want to see her again. Thanks.

@Mrs. Jacks: Thanks so much... I will definitely watch it and stay in touch with her doctor. She was having a lot of dry diapers yesterday, but I did get a wet one around the 6 hr mark, so I think she was/is okay.

@edelweiss: Thanks for sharing. So sorry your LO got hurt/lost a tooth! I think that would freak me out. I hate that accidents like that happen, but I know we can't protect them from everything. It is really hard not to feel guilty though (and it doesn't help the my DH initially yelled at me until he understood what happened).

@NovBaby1112: thanks! she does seem to be doing better today!

My MIL said she took a 3 hr nap this morning... poor thing must have been exhausted from being awake most of Monday night and not really napping yesterday. Apparently she still doesn't want bottles but is eating pureed food, puffs, and popsicles.

i'm so sorry! it's not your fault and all of us would have handled it the same way. if it makes you feel any better, this weekend LO was pulling up on a suitcase (empty, thank goodness), and both he and the suitcase fell. he bled a little and i looked in his mouth but couldn't see the cut. the bleeding then stopped.

that night, he woke up crying/screaming. we gave him tylenol and a bottle and he calmed down. the next morning, i saw that his little lower tooth was missing! it had been knocked loose, and i think must have fallen out in the middle of the night. we took him to the dentist but there was nothing to be done. he will just be gap-toothed until his adult teeth come in :)

i felt guilty, too, even though i know accidents will happen and it was not my fault, but it's so hard! lots of hugs. i know your LO will be better in no time. hope you guys get lots of cuddles together!

@78h2o: Just wanted to let you know that as Wagon Jr. was climbing into his chair for dinner last night, he slipped, banged his chin on the kitchen table and his teeth clamped down on the side of his tongue. Sigh! It bled and bled but I think he's fine... hope your LO is doing ok today!!

Thank you all so much. Every single response was so kind and helpful. Again, I really appreciate it. I want to respond to individual comments but I'm totally crashing. It will have to wait until tomorrow. LO is sleeping now, thanks goodness. She wasn't into napping or eating/drinking today, but she did have enough wet diapers and i got some milk in her before bed. So hopefully she'll sleep tonight.

Thanks again.

@78h2o: do you think a syringe with milk would help?? maybe just swallowing wouldn't hurt whereas latching/sucking probably would. or a straw, where you pinch it to suck up the liquid and then release it in her mouth?

@78h2o: don't feel bad, we ONLY called the pedi because it had been 3 hours and it was still bleeding, and even after she said go to the ER we were like, Ehhh do we REALLY have to, he seems fine...

Tongues heal really fast (and also bleed a lot because of all the blood vessels) so I bet she'll be back to herself in no time. I hope she feels better soon!

@78h2o: tongues are highly vascular and heal quickly. Having said that, I'm no ENT. I can imagine that she won't eat well at all with this. It doesn't look from what you've said that she's had any pain management.

Thinking from a mom perspective, you need to make sure she takes enough by mouth to stay hydrated. I'd stay in close touch with your pediatrician an call right away if she's not having three wet diapers/day, fussy, any signs of infection. (fever, swelling, redness, foul odor, oozing)

I don't envy your position right now... As a mom I can feel my heart racing. Intellectually, I know tongues are resilient. Stay in close touch with those docs :)

Poor baby and mama :( That must have been so scary! I would be inclined to trust the ENT's opinion, since that is the area that he specializes in. Do you have a follow up apt with the pedi or anyone to check on it?

As moms we do the absolute best that we can every day and these things happen to all of us. *hugs!*

I'm so sorry! Hope she gets better real fast! I made a mommy mistake too, a few days ago. My DS was wheezing, and I heard it, but I didn't think to use his inhaler and just thought it would pass. Well I finally took him to the pedi the next day and they chided me for not using the inahler sooner because it turned out his oxygen levels were borderline low. We are all just doing our best!

awwww reading this my heart sank for you... poor baby, and poor mama!! So sorry this happened :( :( :( accidents definitely happen and something scary like that has got to be really heart-wrenching for you. I hope she heals quickly (I think wounds in the mouth in general heal very quickly...??) and until then, frozen things might be good for her since it'll numb the mouth? Maybe something frozen for her to suck on, then nursing or bottle right afterwards so she's nice and numb.

@78h2o: We had almost the exact same thing happen!! My LO bit his tongue and it bled a lot. It bled on and off for the next 3 hours and his pedi said we should go to the ER so we did. We got there, and the doc couldn't even really look at it because he kept moving, and he said it probably needed stitches. They tried for 1.5 hours to get an IV in to sedate him *worst time of my life* before giving him the sedative as an injection. He ended up having 2 stitches. He was totally fine the next day, although tired since we were at the ER til 1am. I on the other hand lost at least 5 years off my life and probably gained a million gray hairs.

Hugs!!

Hugs. Accidents do happen. I flipped out when LO fell when he wasn't walking yet. Scared the crap out of me.

hugs mama!

my brother did something similar when he was 1. he couldn't get stitches, and eventually it did close. my mom always jokes about how he looked like a snake with his 'forked' tongue (not really forked, but it had the giant flap!). no lasting damage.

hope your LO feels better soon!

Awwww :-( I'm sorry, but don't feel bad. You had your hand on her, and that's all that any parent would have done at that time. It was just a freak accident, but she'll heal quickly!

I didn't have one as bad, but our 90 lb dog jumped on DD's back one day and she went face first onto the tile, cutting her tongue and lip open. She didn't need stitches, but I understand how scary it is to see all that blood. (Reminder, the head bleeds more than the rest of the body, but it also heals faster). I'm sure your LO's tongue is just really, really sore today, which is why she isn't wanting to eat, but it should feel much better after a couple of days.
