@mrsjazz: I want a nanny share! :( We struggle somewhat getting time with other children where we live. Most of the families are really insular and not interested in socializing with us because we're "new" (or some other reason, not really sure) and so there aren't as many opportunities to do things with other kids. We've kept Ellie in school because of the social aspect, honestly, but I think Lorelei would enjoy being around other/more kids. When Ellie's friend Katie comes over Lorelei is just beside herself. Wants to hold her hand, play with her... and Katie is an only child and so she really likes to pretend Lorelei is her sister I think. Does make me sometimes wish that we didn't lie in the boonies.

@Mrs. Twine: Wow! "For Blood!" That's amazing! I would not be able to keep a straight face for any of that.

We love the nanny share. I'm actually not working right now but we kept the nanny share so that I'd be able to interview & look for work, but also because we don't want to lose such a good thing. Our LO is super bonded with her nanny, her little BFF, and the family. I love watching them play together, they are like sisters and also mimic each other. We believe our LO started walking early because her little BFF was walking. Our nanny is also friends with other nannies in the neighborhood and they do playdates often.

I think the nanny share is a great way for both babies to socialize but also have almost one-on-one attention from their caregiver.

@mrsjazz: I think watching scaffolding like that is just so awesome! There does seem to be something about seeing another child say or do something that makes it seem more possible.

Sounds like she's enjoying using her new command! And 'no' is always a popular favorite.

We haven't done a rectal temp on Lorelei ever I don't think. Yesterday she cracked me up because she tried to insert a menstrual cup. I asked what she was doing and she looked at me with this face like, "Seriously?! This lady doesn't know what I'm doing?" and says, "for blood." Duh. And then the other day I had a container of feta cheese. She and Ellie are both cheese fiends (today she learned to say, "Jarlsburg" because she wanted to eat it. All.). I got ready to give her some from the container and she grabbed my hand, looked me straight in the eye, and said, "dump it" in this very serious voice like she was a police officer telling me to drop a weapon. She wanted all of what was in the container. She definitely makes us laugh!

Does your daughter like the baby from the nanny share? I'm intrigued by the idea. Obviously nannies are really rare around here, but it seems like it could be such a nice thing for everyone involved if you find the right nanny and share family.

@Mrs. Twine: Yes, she has been practicing them. Unfortunately for us the "up" and "no" are her favorites to practice. This morning while I was getting her ready to go to the nanny she kept coming up to me and holding her hands up and saying "up" so we were late :)

At least Lorelei stuck the thermometer in her ear! haha. I was imagining if she tried to take a rectal temperature.

She does a nanny share with a baby who's 3 months older, but I think she really enjoyed being around the 2-year-old, also because he was really gentle and sweet with her. She had a play date with a 2-year-old boy before and he was so rough so she didn't like him.

So sweet! Does she seem to have times when she is really practicing the new words? When I'm putting Lorelei to sleep she'll often want to talk to me about new things she's thinking about or processing. We have had a big truck dumping gravel near our bins, and Mr. T taught her the the back portion is called a "pup" so she kept wanting to tell me about the pup dumping gravel and that she saw it through the window. And that now it's night and so the man who drives it is resting, and the truck is resting, and will she see it tomorrow? Drives me a little nuts, but it is so earnest and cute and you can practically see her brain working and chewing away at this stuff. This morning she got the thermometer and put it in her ear and proudly announced, "normal!" Seems like your daughter really loved having someone a little older around to learn from!

@littlek: Yeah, I was pretty surprised. But she followed the 2-year-old around the entire time. It's like she learns better from seeing other kids rather than mommy or daddy trying to teach her things.

All done is just too cute!

That's amazing what your LO picked up in one weekend. I love when LO gets to be around older children because he learns so much from watching them.

It amazes me how much my LO can pick up and retain (15 months). My BFF, her husband, and my godson stayed with us from Fri-Mon. My BFF's son is 2 and the two kids were monkey-see, monkey-do the entire time.

This is what she learned over the 4-day stay:

--all done (I had been saying all done at the end of meals for a while and she would repeat after me but never say it when she was done. Because the 2-year-old said this constantly with his meals, my LO now does it. She told her nanny this morning that she was "all done" with breakfast."

--up

--No (She already knew how to say no, but only said it back to us when we told her to stop something, but she learned from the 2-year-old how to say no to things she doesn't want and especially No during a tantrum!

--Mommy (my favorite! 2-year-old calls his mom, mommy. She was always saying Daddy, but not mama or mommy)

And she knows how to say agua "awaa." She also understands what "leche" is. This weekend inspired my DH to speak Spanish to LO, finally.

Is your LO around older children? Do they learn things from them?
