@LindsayInNY: I'm so sorry that have to go through this. I had to take 800 mg of miso this past May as well. My bean had no heartbeat any longer. I took it orally, with 800mg of Motrin an hour prior and watched crappy TV and mostly all passed. I had the followup ultrasound and I still had a clot left in, which passed later that week, with a second round and lower dose of miso. I followed the HCG down to 0. I'm so sorry

@LindsayInNY: I just came here to send you this link. Hugs.

Unfortunately I had to do this whole process again this summer. It was similar. But I took it before bed time and was basically up all night in pain. I also forgot to take any pain meds.

My recs: take it in the morning when you don't have your LO at home. Take Advil. Lie down. Drink lots of water. Watch some trashy TV.

The first time it basically all passed at once. The second time it didn't. And I lost a bunch of pieces over the next week or so... sorry to be graphic. Both times I had a follow up ultrasound and blood work.

@Tanjowen: was asking about miso experiences so I should update my last entry.

It is 25 days later and I ended up doing 3 rounds of miso :bummed:
I thought the first round went well but my uterine lining was still thick so I did another round... And then another... my latest scan showed that my lining was <10mm so I don't have to do a D&C. The miso never caused me much cramping and the bleeding was delayed after my 2nd and 3rd round. My HCG is down to 29 and I'm hoping by next week it'll be zero. It's been a long process and I'm sick of bleeding but I think the end is near. I can't say my miso experience was good or bad. This is always a crap situation to be in. My goal was to not do a D&C and I accomplished that. I was the first gal in my clinic to do 3 rounds of the drugs tho!

Well I'm back to add my own story. I also hope it will help others in the future who have to decide which route to take to manage a miscarriage.

Long story short, this pregnancy didn't seem to be going well from the beginning. My HCG was barely doubling and early ultrasounds showed the babe measuring nearly two weeks behind my dates. A heartbeat was detected at 8w but was low. Yesterday at an ultrasound, there was nothing found in the sac. I was 10+2 and was given the options to wait, take the misoprostol or have a d&c. I chose misoprostol because I wanted to move on and I already had a D&E in December and didn't want my poor uterus to have to go through that again.

After DD went to bed at 7:30pm I inserted the 4 pills and lay on the couch to wait. I took an Advil and Tylonel 3 after an hour, but I didn't have any pain. I felt mild cramping around 11:00pm but nothing was really happening so I went up to bed. Around midnight I went to the bathroom and started bleeding and passing large clots. I never had any more than moderate period cramping. I lay in bed with a heating pad and fell asleep. I woke up this morning and took more misoprostol and painkillers and have honestly felt ok all day. I stayed home and rested and continued taking pain pills but I had been expecting FAR worse. I definitely stayed on top of taking painkillers but I don't know if I even would have needed them. I'm continuing to bleed but nothing major. I have a scan tomorrow afternoon to find out if I've passed everything. I hope I have because I don't want a d&c.

I'm glad I chose medical management and eventhough I read lots of horror stories, my miscarriage was not terrible (physically) at all. It was way easier than I imagined. Emotionally it has been awful but I'm thankful that it wasn't painful.

It sucks that anyone has to make these kind of decisions and I am thankful that I had @silva: and @Mrs. Champagne: stories to help me get through last night.

@delight: I'm sorry you are going through this, I hope your experience is as straight forward as mine. I also hope things start more quickly than mine did, the waiting was awful.
I watched a lot of tv and sat in bed with the heating pad. And not to sound awful, but if they gave you drugs, take them. I tend to feel like I shouldn't, but my husband was like "you aren't going to be a hero in this situation, take a pill and go relax." Good advice.

my levels dropped quickly. My next blood test was 9 days after I took the miso and it was below 5 by then. I ended up bleeding again beginning two days after I took it, for about 4 days. That bleeding was lighter than a regular period, and stopped and started.

I'm on cd 21 right now, however, and still haven't ovulated. It's driving me nuts.

I didn't feel much lying down but everytime I got up to pee (I was drinking lots of water) I felt clots come out. And finally everything came out at once.

@Silva: I'm so sorry for your loss. Thanks for adding your story too. I'm glad the miso worked for you too. Has your HCG gone down now?

I'll be sure to add in my medically induced mc story here too. It's only been an hour since inserting the 800mg and I am not feeling much yet. I have taken miso once before when I had my D&E. It was just one pill orally to start some contractions.

@Mrs. Champagne: Thanks again for sharing your experience- it helped me be less anxious. I wanted to add my experience to this thread as well, hope you don't mind!

My experience has been pretty positive as well so far. I was 7 weeks when we confirmed (after several blood tests and an ultrasound that revealed an empty sac) that my pregnancy was non viable (likely a blighted ovum).
I took the medication Tuesday morning (4 200mg pills taken vaginally). It took about 6 hours to start working, and during that time I had intense back pain, diarrhea and some nausea. Around 4:30 in the afternoon I began bleeding and cramping started in earnest. By 6:30 it was pretty painful through the tylenol so I took some of the dilaudid they had prescribed. I stopped bleeding heavily after 4hours. I did feel some large clots pass about half way through this time period. I only bled when I was on the toilet/bearing down, so I basically pushed it out- it didn't just flow out into a pad. It wasn't a scary amount or anything, but it was more than I usually have with a period.

The next day I had minor cramping and some spotting. My doctor had me come in for another ultrasound which revealed that the pregnancy had passed, however they wanted to continue monitoring my HCG levels.
I did begin bleeding again last time, about the amount of a light period, and have some uncomfortable cramping today. They said I can expect this to come and go for a few more days.

As for my HCG levels, they were about 950 on Monday (780 Friday, 890 on Saturday). Yesterday they had dropped to 250. I am doing another blood draw Monday.

Knock on wood, but the misoprostol seems to have worked really well for my body, and I'm glad to be on my way to fully ending this pregnancy/miscarriage. My doctors have advised me to wait a full cycle until we try again, and we will be following their advice- mostly so that I can return to a healthy place with diet and exercise.

I'm so sorry you are going through this.

I miscarried in June (saw a strong heart beat @ 6.5 weeks but then lost the baby by 8 weeks). My midwife prescribed me Misoprostol. I thought it was a pretty benign drug and experience(since I had read so many horror stories online), but learned that I had an incomplete miscarriage. I ended up having a D&C 2.5 weeks later, since my pregnancy hormone levels were still something like 9,000!

Thanks for sharing and I wish you peace!

I feel like the internet very often sheds a terrifying light on everything. I got a bad infertility diagnosis (high fsh, low egg count, etc) and everything was soooo discouraging from what I read. Really scared me. But things turned out fine for me so you just never know.

I'm so sorry for your loss  I too had a natural miscarriage with misiprostol to speed things up and agree that the actual cramping and bleeding was not horrible, which was such a relief compared to what I had been warned to expect. Thanks for sharing your story, I truly believe it will help others researching what to expect.

Thanks so much for posting this. I had a very similar experience. I had a missed miscarriage, and surgery scared me. So I decided to try misoprostol. Google made me terrified about the pain and the gore. It wound up being such a non-event that I was convinced it did not work and I would still have to get a D&C. The OB even got a second opinion from her colleague because I was so insistent that it was ineffective.

I definitely learned to take Dr. Google with a grain of salt after that!

@Mrs. Champagne: Thank you for sharing! When given the option, I got some horror stories told to me about misoprostol - I'm glad it was relatively painless. I ended up being given misoprostol BEFORE my d&c anyway, as it can help speed the process up and make the procedure easier.

So sorry for your recent loss & sending healing vibes.

So sorry for your loss. I am glad to hear you had a good experience but that ER doctor needs some tact. That is awful!
