They found hers during her routine annual mammogram. She also was originally going to have a lumpectomy along with the lymph nodes, but after finding out that hers is a pretty aggressive type, she made the decision to have a double mastectomy and reconstruction. </p> <p>She found out in March. They did her operation in May and removed her lymph nodes then. Thank goodness her cancer had not spread! Because it's an aggressive cancer, they are doing 4 rounds of chemo just to be safe. She's about half way through the chemo now and then will complete the reconstruction when she's done.</p> <p>Because hers is more precautionary, the doctors are thankfully spreading her chemo out every 3 weeks. She feels bad for about a week or so afterward, but that does allow her some time to recuperate between sessions. She's even started to venture out on her own a little and drive herself around on her good days. My husband has taken her to chemo, and he says it's a lot of sitting around waiting for the IVs to drip into her port. She said that it takes a couple of days afterward to feel bad, and that it feels like her bones are hurting afterward, because they are trying to generate bone marrow growth. She has some strong pain medicine and she takes it easy during that time. She did shave her head because her hair started to fall out. I'm thankful that my BIL and his wife live with her so she has someone to watch out for her.</p> <p>Sorry for the book! But I thought it might be helpful to share her experience. My mother has unfortunately dealt with cancer as well. My mother is a breast cancer survivor and had a double masectomy almost 15 years ago. She was diagnosed last year with a different kind of rare cancer and underwent intense chemo and radiation. She is thankfully in remission now.</p> <p>My advice is to stay supportive and optimistic. Your mom needs optimism around her right now. Also it helps to try to go on with life throughout this process. Your mom will be going through tough treatment and she won't always feel her best, but I know my mom didn't want to be treated different during this and like we couldn't discuss normal everyday things with her. I have a lump I am getting tested again next week, followed by surgery regardless of the outcome as breast cancer runs in my family. I have just started with the general websites to try to learn about the procedure and recovery. One thing my coworker told me was to be kind to myself. There is so many feelings and emotions. Maybe a book of uplifting quotes for when times are rough, and check with the doctor but honestly something relaxing the day before surgery if you can. I saw on the news that patients had better treatment outcomes when they were relaxed and less stress. They had the patients using adult coloring books while in the hospital to help relieve stress. Your mom may find a care kit a welcome relief. I'm rambling. Sorry. I'm scared myself. I remember being very scared, but he was quite calm. It runs in our family so he expected to get it one day, I guess. He had a lot of his colon removed, and a bit of chemo and - touch wood - has been fine since. I'm not sure I have much advice, other than be kind to yourself. It is okay to be scared.
