Just remember that you're already doing all anyone can do to ensure their childs safety you are not leaving the room.
More than likely that child 50 years ago was left alone and tried to climb out, so please don't think this can happen to you. ALL child accidents as horrible as they are, are a small percentage of a products history, and do not reflect typical use.

I totally dwell on things. Especially being a nurse at a children's hospital. I could NOT work in the emergency room or PICU for this reason. We have a lot of sad stuff on the floor where I work but nothing like the more critical places where it's not the exception but the rule.

Yes, there have been a couple stories about toddlers running and falling onto the subway tracks in a subway station. I will never ever ever let my son be in a subway station without his stroller. Not even for a second. I'm too afraid of him breaking away from my grip and running straight onto the tracks. i will forever be the annoying mom who everyone rolls their eyes at who keeps her stroller fully open on the train.

If this lessens your anxiety any, when my LO was about a year old she managed to tip over her high chair (well, it was a FP booster strapped to a dining room chair) and went crashing to the wood floor. Took her to the ER and she was completely fine, just shook up.

I needed to buy a cheap car seat to use at LO's grandparents' house. As usual I skimmed through the hundreds of Amazon reviews while trying to pick one. Someone had posted a pic of an infant on life support saying not to buy that seat because their baby died in a crash while they used that seat! I can't get the image/story out of my mind, even though I kind of think it was a troll post. I had to buy a different seat.

We use the highchair that attaches to our regular chair and can become a booster. But we actually can't use it as a booster because both LO's went through a phase where they would kick at the table and could potentially tip themselves over. We started using sturdier chairs because the ones we had before were really light-weight Ikea ones. It really scared me!
And I just don't get why anyone would ever put their baby on a table or counter. Even if they are not mobile it's just not worth the risk! I know a lot of people do it but I just don't understand.

@Foodnerd81: Ugh, yeah, I can't watch those either! I'm already on board with ERF based on the research, I don't need the visuals. My LO has gotten car sick a few times in stop and go traffic, and my mom suggested we turn him as soon as we're able. Nuh uh! I'd much rather clean puke off him and the seat, than have him be less safe.

@Applesandbananas: the Bumbo, yes!
I think a lot of these things are common sense. You just don't leave a baby unattended for extended periods of time. Even in a safe secure high chair I would never leave a baby out of sight.

This is actually a serious one, but I have never been able to watch the car seat crash test videos showing the RF is safer. I just trust the research- I can't have that image in my head. DH has tried to argue that it depends on the crash and I'm like, I will send you a link to watch this video if you won't take my word for it. I don't want to think about it too much!

High chairs have definitely come a long way in 50 years!!

Right around the time LO was big enough for the bumbo seat, there were several horrifying stories of kids falling off counters and stuff, but bumbo seats aren't really supposed to go on the counter!

Over Christmas, after buying an inexpensive highchair to leave at their house, my mom said it really wasn't what she wanted, but at least she was assuming it was safe to use. Then she told me about a family friend whose baby DIED in a highchair!!! Why would you even say that?!? Granted, it was about 50 years ago, and highchairs have come a long, long way since then, but now every time I buckle LO into his highchair, crazy thoughts run through my head. I already never leave the room when he is in it, and I know it's completely safe, and sturdy, but still...

I'm not sure the circumstances of how the baby died, but I assume it tipped over somehow. I really didn't want to dwell on it at the time, but now I can't stop thinking about it.

Has anyone had someone tell a similar story to you that you'd rather not have been told? How do I get the crazy thoughts out of my head?
