My kid routinely went 7 days without pooping. There is a wide range of normal.

My pediatrician said EBF newborns can go up to a week without pooping before she's at all concerned.

My little guy stopped with the daily pooping at 4-5 days old and still only goes once or twice a week at five months old! As long as your wee babe is having plenty of wet diapers, is happy and is gaining well, then you're doing ok!!

@ldh112: the mess and the farts!

My DS pooped 8-10 times a day for the first 3 months! Not long after she was born, my DD started going 3-4 days without pooping and would usually only do one huge poop then. It worried me too since I was comparing her to DS, but every baby is different. She didn't seem to have any tummy troubles other than gas right after feeding. Both of my LOs were EBF. I would try bicycle legs and maybe a warm bath.

LO2 had that issue. I honestly thought in the beginning that he was jaundiced or maybe had low glucose levels because he hadn't pooped in 10 days. I don't know if it's just that he was a sleepy/lazy baby but he pooped once a week (he was EBF). But man when he pooped, he pooped.

If your ped isn't worried and he is gaining weight, i wouldn't be too worried.

@buttermilk: I had lots of issues with BF and weight gain initially. My daughter didn't go poop from 13 days to 17 or 18 days (can't recall exactly) which freaked me out with everything else going on. When she went it was AWFUL. everywhere, all over herself... But I was relieved! It took her a couple weeks after that to get more regular but it was alarming to me so I get it. The pediatrician had said to just keep our eye on it at the time. Now she goes almost daily (BF and formula supplementing still), but sometimes skips a couple days (she's 9 weeks).

Stimulate her bottom with a thermometer once or twice a day and just hang in there if the pediatrician isn't super concerned. And... Be prepared for a massive blow out to occur when it does! :)

Eventually it becomes normal for EBF babies to go days without pooping. But at 13 days my LO was definitely still pooping after almost every feeding. I think you should call the ped as baby health really isn't the expertise of an LC.

Hi!

My LO is 13 days old today and hasn't popped since Wednesday evening. She had about 12 dirty diapers in her first 2-3 days of life. She lost 5 ounces in the first 2 days home but has been gaining it back slowly-ish. Yesterday at 12 days old she was within 4 ounces of her birth weight. I've been working with an LC to establish my milk supply and all seems to be going well. She has 10 wet diapers per day on average, but no poop! I am not sure what to think bc my LC says we should be seeing more but then seems to contradict herself saying "but every baby is different". I've read anything goes when it comes to the frequency of poop, but is that really true? Also we are still supplementing with formula a little, trying to wean off as my milk supply grows.

What experiences have you guys had?
