It doesn't bother me but it's clear that my OB is pretending to know me by chart reading before she enters room. I get it bc they have soooo many patients

My first OB was like this. She had so many patients and I saw a midwife half the time. I didn't take it personally, and actually my midwife seemed to really remember me and my history.

My OB with my second two pregnancies seems to remember a lot about me. Maybe not every detail about my prior pregnancies or everything we have discussed, but she knows I have two boys, what me and my husband do for work, as well as the general game plan for the pregnancy.

My old OB for DD was like this. It felt really crap just being a number, especially as a first time Mum.

For pregnancy #2, I sought out a new one and he was amazing - always took the time, remembered our IF history. That pregnancy ended in miscarriage & he took care of me through that too.

I went back to him for this pregnancy & he's been so good. He saw me weekly in the first trimester because of my recurrent miscarriage anxiety and he just gets it.

Changing OBs was the best thing I did! I think it's well worth looking around or at least meeting an alternative to see!

@thepicklemonster: Since it's niggling in the back of your mind maybe ask around for other suggestions or maybe check local Facebook groups. You could even schedule a meet and greet type appointment with someone else just to see if there's someone awesome you're missing out on or if staying put makes more sense.

I go to a practice where you're expected to see several doctors so you know them all (they take turns delivering). This is my second pregnancy with this practice. The last time I went in, I saw the doctor who delivered my last kid. He was reading my chart off to me and something didn't seem right. I suddenly realized he was looking at my chart from my 2 year old (who ironically was there with me). I told him and we got on track but it was weird. He clearly also did not remember delivering DS. However I wasn't too bothered because he did a great job delivering DS and that matters more to me. One of the other doctors there does a much better job remembering, or at least looking through my file before he walks in the room. Maybe it is just a personality thing.

I've been with my current doc since I was 17. I have had at least yearly exams, with the exception of the 4 years I lived abroad. Every single time, it is the exact same, he's reading my history off the chart as he comes in. But I trust him to treat me appropriately, but not to have memorized the details.

Unfortunately, my OB is like that. She never remembered basic things and I had to remind her of important stuff every now and then. That didn't seem like a big deal until she chose the day when my mom tagged along for a routine visit to tell me that "it's my third baby, should be an easy labor." Um, no, I have only one living child at home, you're the one who treated me when the miscarriage happened only a few months earlier, and my mom does NOT know it happened! Thankfully I was venting to my mom just that morning how the doctor has no clue who I am, so she just thought the doctor was confused.

And then I had some mental health concerns toward the end of the pregnancy, and between the weekly visits she'd totally forget that I'd asked for help (I had no idea what help she could give, but even remembering I'm struggling would have been nice). Ugh, that does seem to be common though from others' comments...

Thanks for all the responses. Exactly -- I don't need him to be my BFF, but he should review my chart for, like, two minutes before he sees me. DH thinks we should say something to him about it, but that seems super awkward. I probably won't switch, but it's in the back of my mind and I do have time...

It would bother me. I see a midwife in a large practice (OB's and CNM's) and everyone reviews my chart and seems to know what we discussed last appointment. Even the nurses remember stuff, like if my nausea was particularly bad. So I would probably look in to switching if my doctor couldn't seem to remember anything or even review my chart.

I don't think it's abnormal to not remember, but it's not normal or acceptable that he doesn't fake it better! They should review your chart before and pretend! I always assume my docs don't remember me, (unless I see them multiple times in a row) and that they're just good actors!

I have Kaiser (big HMO) and the nurses or assistants that bring you back always ask "have you met so and so before?" and they must tell the doctor yes or no so they know how to greet the patient. The usually do a good job of pretending to remember you.

When we had our first well baby with LO2 the pediatrian introduced herself to me and DH. We had been in her office two weeks before (and many many times before that) for LO1. No recognition at all. We described LO1 and her ailments and she couldn't even pretend to remember us. It only slightly annoyed me. I was more relieved that despite all of LOs visits for various daycare colds/ear aches/pneumonias we don't even register as frequent patients.

For reference I've been seeing him a couple times a month or more since December. Now he recognizes us, but I still have to remind him why we're there.

I am at a new practice and haven't seen the same practitioner twice yet. I have seen the phlebotomist every single appointment (4 times in 3 months) and she remembers me so I think that says something about when a doctor does not because he obviously spends more time with you.

My OB remembers me, but it's like no one else at the practice ever bothers to read my chart. It makes me crazy when they mention things that are completely wrong. Or, like they tell me I'll have my GD test at my next appointment. No, I won't. Because I've already got it :bummed: .

There's a lot of little things at my practice that bug me, and I'm never sure if it adds up to enough to switch.

There was a midwife in my group like that, the other two were fine but this one was terrible. Of course she ended up delivering me. I called about 48 hours after I gave birth with a question and she didn't remember me then either and there were enough out of the ordinary things at the birth that you would think she'd remember two days later. Clearly I'm switching to someone else for next time and I honestly wish I had for that baby.

I think he could at least take 5 seconds to review your chart before he walks in the room so he could pretend he remembers your name... I understand that doctors are extremely busy and might not remember every patient but the charts are there to help them. I am almost entirely certain my OB doesn't ever remember me (seen him 4 times in 2 months because I had to check in after ER visits), but he makes a good faith effort to keep up with my medical history (mentioning weight loss, asking how I am feeling since I had extreme nausea, etc).
