They are in the process of adopting (again internationally) a sibling group of older kids - it's very difficult to find families for groups of kids over the age of 8. That was a small part of her motivation. Also, my mom and step-dad were unable to have children together, so my little sister and soon-to-be-sister are the only ones with his last name. Did I mention my family was complicated? ;-) I swear we should have a show. Lol.
