Update: Well, that went well!

We arrived at our appointment, got checked in, and saw the doctor. Little miss was awake the entire time so they had a nurse come in to hold her. Thankfully she stayed quiet while she was being held. He performed the postpartum check then went straight to the matter. I can't tell you exactly what happened - I know there was a clamp to keep me open, like the one used for the pap smear. Past that, not sure. He showed me the device used to insert the Mirena (all I could see of the actual Mirena were the strings). He applied a little pressure and then it was done in seconds. It didn't hurt other than some initial pressure.

I didn't take pain medicine before hand or after. There was no spotting or anything. I went from my appointment to lunch, then to walk around the local campus with little miss (who was by this time asleep). Visited with some old friends and professors, then went home. It's been about six hours and no cramping but I'm starting to ache a little. There's been a little pink tinged discharge but not a lot or even all that pink. I'm going to take something, just to prevent more achiness later.

Here's hoping things continue to go well with this!

It hurt for a few second (literally, less than 10 seconds) when they were dilating my cervix (just a tiny bit, enough to fit it in) and then it was over. Start to finish less than 5 minutes. And the hurt was really nothing compared to contractions, so it was barely more than a wince for me.

I had some very mild cramping afterwards (I took Advil beforehand) and spotted off and on for about 6 weeks (never needing more than a panty liner). I haven't had any since (got it at 14w pp, am now at 8.5m pp), no cramping, no spotting since (and no period!)

I love not having to worry about it!

Following as I am asking my doctor about it tomorrow at my 6 week pp checkup. This little peanut is enough work right now. Not taking any chances of another one any time soon!

I had one before baby and one post baby. The one pre-baby hurt like a mofo, the one post-baby didn't hurt much. It was sort of the same feeling as a not-too-bad labor contraction. I did take 800mg of Advil before my appointment. It took about 15 minutes total from start to finish, inserting the actual mirena took just a minute or so. After, I had some on and off bleeding for a few weeks; nothing a pantyliner can't handle. When I had a mirena pre-baby, I had a lot of cramping for weeks after insertion, this time I had almost no cramping. Even with cramping and some bleeding, it's totally worth it IMO since youre protected for 5 years without having to do anything! Good luck!

Definitely take 800mg of Motrin before you go. Mine was pretty bad. It took half an hour to get in and my doctor said it was the hardest one he's done. It hurt pretty bad, but I was fine after it was done. Totally worth it.

I had one put in last week. I took some Advil beforehand, just in case. (I had a Mirena pre-baby, and the insertion was very painful.) This time around, the insertion took about 2 minutes, and the most uncomfortable aspect was actually the speculum. I only had a tiny bit of cramping afterwards, and I spotted for one day.

My husband was in the waiting room taking care of our baby. I am glad he was there, since I had to wait quite some time in the room for the doctor to come.

I just had mine inserted a couple weeks ago. Not going to lie, it was pretty painful. Because my cervix was very high, they scheduled the insertion to be done under ultrasound guidance. It probably took half an hour because they couldn't get it in right at first. At the time, it felt like it was more painful than my c section!

I did take both of my twins with me to the appointment and had no issues with them. They slept through the whole appointment.

Good luck!

@NaturallyCathy: I got mine in almost a year ago at 6 weeks pp. It took about a minute, cramped a little while she was placing it but really nothing after. It wasnt painful for me at all. I had a couple episodes of some mild cramps in the first couple months but nothing since. I love it! I still havent gotten my period back. :)

A lot of people recommend taking the Advil shortly before you have it inserted, I didn't but I wish I had- I don't have a baby yet though which I know plays a role in that. Mine went in without an issue though and the whole appointment took less then fifteen minutes. Good luck!

@mossyslane: Glad to know it won't take long. Didn't know about the ultrasound so I'm glad that you brought that up! And I would leave DD at home with DS if I didn't worry about my MIL trying to juggle both babies. She doesn't have enough focus on DS sometimes anyways, I feel like adding DD to the mix would be just too much, even for a few hours. I feel like DD would sleep in the car seat and not be that big of an issue if it's as fast as you and @oliviaoblivia: say. I'm just glad it won't take like an hour or something!

@oliviaoblivia: I have two and we're done for a while until these two grow up. Irish twins is one thing - Irish triplets? Not a chance. I'll be sure to keep some pain medicine handy!

I had one before baby and implantation hurt, but it's supposedly easier pp. insertion took maybe five minutes but I had to lay there a bit to recover cause it did hurt pretty bad. I went home had a couple Advil and relaxed but was up to my usual business the next day.
I'll be getting another when we're done having babies.

@NaturallyCathy: Just did this about 8 months ago. ... Mine was painful (not excruciating) but quick. It slipped out of the casing the first time and so it took a little longer than normal, but was still under 15 minutes, I would say. I was glad to have my LO at home and not with me--it wouldn't have been impossible for her to be there, but was one of those appointments where it was better to be able to focus and not have any curve balls. They had to do an ultrasound to make sure it was placed right (because of the slip at the beginning) and then I was on my way--took advil that afternoon for cramping but was able to have a pretty normal afternoon. I know this was harder for my friend who had one in with out having had a baby first, but I think PP, nothing compares!:) Good luck!

... And I'm scheduled to have the Mirena put in. But I don't really know what to expect. I've never had an IUD before and I'm wondering if it's initially painful (I'm assuming it will be), if it will take very long to put in (I'm hoping not!), and if it would be weird if I brought DD along for this appointment or if I should leave her ar home with her brother.

Can someone walk me through this? I'm a little nervous.
