@Mrsbells: That's so good to know. Hearing from other moms here, seems most outgrow it, unless it was another underlying issue altogether. Thanks so much for chiming in. :)

@Pollywog: Wow sounds like you were a pretty stellar athlete to me! Good to know it never got in the way of athletics. And you're right, I really don't notice it much in adults.

@Dahlia: I suppose if their walking isn't affected by it, there's really nothing to worry about. Three is still very young and it seems most kids outgrow it. Thanks for chiming in!

@Littlebit7: I'll certainly look into it with a pediatric PT. The aesthetics so much don't bother me, it's just that it seemed to come on suddenly and he has been tripping a good bit. I looked at photos and videos from a year ago when he was 1.5 and he did not have knock knees then. I noticed it overnight almost. Really appreciate your informative feedback!

I have severe knock knees (and was born with muscle bound legs). I was a really late walker. My parents put me in swimming and ballet and I could walk normally by grade school. I wasn't a star athlete, but I did letter in swimming all four years in high school and complete three sub-four marathons.

As an adult I find my knock knees are like my lip tie... something that is only noticed by fellow parents who are worried about their kid. Your son will be fine!

@SupernovaJ: Honestly, depending on your ped, they might not even notice it (not a ding to your ped, it’s just that they generally don’t see or refer for these things until it’s causing a demonstrable problem) The best evaluation of whether or not it is an issue (or could become an issue) would be by a pediatric PT. There wouldn’t be any harm in seeing one barring a huge co pay or something. If it’s nothing, the PT will tell you that. If it’s something that can be managed with a home program they will tell you that too, or whatever it is they recommend.

@Littlebit7: Hmm that's good to know. I am definitely going to have his ped evaluate his hip and mention the tripping.

If it’s coming from the hip (femoral torsion) you could try some PT to strengthen the hip rotators to account for the femur bone being “twisted” at the hip (this is if you still see some tripping or his gait or coordination being affected). I’m not a pediatric pt (just an adult one) so maybe someone else can chime in.

@wrkbrk: That's good to know! My daughter is 4 and never had knock knees so it's new to us. Thinking back, I've noticed it on toddlers and even kids but just thought it was a "kid thing" and even thought it was cute. I don't see a lot of adults with it. But I guess when it's your own kid you notice it more (and less on others, ironically!). We'll just keep an eye on it. :)

@SupernovaJ: yes and in fact I asked the ped about this! Granted it was about a year ago (so 1.5 for us) but she said absolutely nothing to worry about!

My son is 2.5 and earlier this year, we noticed he has knock knees. I totally get that knock knees is common especially at this age, but I would love to hear from parents whose toddlers had knock knees that went away as they grew older (or didn't). It's very noticeable and while cute because he's still little, it doesn't seem AS common as our pediatrician (or the web) claims it is.

My brother has knock knees as an adult. It's somewhat noticeable when he's wearing pants but I don't think it's a big deal. Still curious about outcomes as they grow and just want to be prepared in general. Our pediatrician brushes it off and says it's common and thankfully only a cosmetic issue. I understand it's not serious but lately, we notice he's been tripping a lot and I wonder if it's because his knees touch/overlap? Our ped said his condition doesn't require treatment unless it's very extreme and causing pain. Treatment at that point would be a very involved surgery.

Just curious to hear from other parents!
