I have spent so much money on my son's clothes that they must be reused even if I have a girl next time, so I'm sure I'll be dealing with this if thats the case!

My son was also often mistook for a girl and he never wore pink!

People mistake my son for a girl all the time even when he is in boyish clothes and his hair is super short. It doesn't bother me but I do correct them nicely when I get the chance.

@lizzywiz: Good for you. I absolutely love your attitude on this topic. My son (16 mo) is always being mistaken for a girl but I don't care at all. I'm sure it would happen even more, but he happens wear a lot of blue as its DH's favorite color. I try to dress him in other colors as mush as possible tho.

Everyone thinks my youngest is a boy, and I actually have no idea why. I guess because she doesn't wear just pink and purple? Her lovies are neutral/boyish so maybe that's it. She doesn't have much hair, that could be it too. I'll never know. I just smile and nod.

Everyone always thinks dd is a boy because she has short super curly hair (it's actually past her shoulders when wet!) but it kinda drives me crazy.

This happens to us often, because my daughter mostly wears pants and shorts, and rarely anything obviously 'girly'. Because, you know, skirts get in the way of climbing, girly shoes aren't good for running in, and I just do not believe in hair bows. She also has this really great little punk rock mullet, because the back of her hair just grew faster, and I went with it.

So all the time people think she's a boy, and I don't mind. They often seem embarrassed when I say oh, she's 3, or whatever, but again, I don't really mind.

@Mrs. Jump Rope: she is 28 months
@Maysprout: you're right that many people are just embarrassed and I get it and I am ok with that as long as they have a little grace. It's the ones who are emotionally stunted and channel their embarrassment into a weird anger or blame thing who get my goat.
@sheskrafty: that would happen to us all the time when LO was younger because everyone gifted us with pink stuff so that is what she wore. Still got mistaken for a boy because of the no hair thing.
@Corduroy: oh, geez!

This is not quite the same, but it shows how crazy people are. When LO was a small toddler we noticed that if she had a big bow in her hair we got numerous comments on how cute she is. If no bow, very few comments. It was the strangest thing that we actually tested out a few times, and it held true every time.

Lesson learned: Bows=Cute little girls
No bow= not nearly as cute

The same thing happened to us recently and when my husband corrected the woman she spat, "well, she's wearing primary colors!!". It is ridiculous. My LO is 18 months and her hair is finally getting longer. I don't mind it much but it sometimes bothers DH, especially when DD is wearing a dress and still gets called a boy.

This happens to us a lot. I don't always correct strangers if they're just commenting while passing by. But if then they make conversation and realize she's a girl they always feel embarrassed. For us I've never thought that it was because they thought we should dress her more like a girl but just they felt embarrassed because they made a mistake. Sometimes they give a reason but it's usually something silly because theyre flustered so I don't take much offense in what they're saying just because their flustered.

The whole neighborhood thought I was a boy till I turned 10 and grew my hair out... I enjoyed it.
Sometimes people told my parents they are sick for letting their boy wear dresses... people!?!

My LO is 19 months and looks sick in pink because of her coloring. So she wears a lot of blue & everyone assumes boy. I agree it's awkward when you get to the point in the conversation where they ask the name. I've even been told LO "has a dumb name for a boy.". Oh well. I'm so glad her hair is growing.

Ugh. That's annoying. I would have no problem dressing my daughter in blue all the time... but she has decided that she loves pink. She has all kinds of other tomboy characteristics though, and I love that about her. I don't ever want to hear anyone tell my daughter that she's "too boyish" or "not girly enough", or I'll go all mama bear on them!

How old is your LO?

A few people mistook Chloe for a boy. She was in pink. I let it roll off my shoulders too!

...and I couldn't care less, but I am SO f-ing sick of adults who can't handle it!

Normally I totally roll with comments like, "What a handsome boy" or whatever, because why embarrass the commenter? We surely don't care and just graciously accept the compliment. But sometimes it comes up and people just can't let it go.

Here is a beautiful example: daughter is wearing a blue shirt with water color flowers on it, jeans, and sandals. Someone starts chatting and goes on about what a cute little guy 'he' is. I am able to carry it off until they ask her name and you would have thought I just spit in their pumpkin spice latte. Sour faces all around and then, this, "Well, she's wearing blue!"

For f-k's sake, you made an innocent mistake, I don't care, but now you're going to be pissy and complain about my daughter wearing blue?!@# People have also questioned why she has short hair (nobody's business but she was a baldy who just recently started getting enough to have to comb), like having a little girl with short hair is misleading or something.

LO wants to be (and will be) a superhero for Halloween. Lord save me from any gender stereotyping freak-shows we may run into.
