@gingerblonde: I was in a similar situation when I got pregnant. I had recently lost 15 lbs before my wedding, then a month after the wedding got pregnant.

My body IMMEDIATELY gained back the 15 lbs. Like, in the first 8 weeks and I was actually eating way less because I was sick all the time. I posted about it quite a bit here, but one of the doctors in my practice was really rude to me about it and advised me to "stop drinking milkshakes and eating cookies". I hadn't been able to eat a dairy product or a cookie in ages...I struggled to eat dry toast, or an apple. I was pretty upset.

I had gained 35 lbs before I even started my 3rd trimester, which is when most people gain the most. It was AWFUL.

However....in my third trimester, I only gained about 7 lbs in the last 3 months. Gained about 42 lbs total which isn't GREAT, but wasn't that bad.

I'm now 5 months pp, and have lost 32 lbs doing nothing. I haven't exercised, and eat a TON because I pump so much it makes me starving. So I have 13 lbs to go which is pretty doable to me. I'm planning to get serious about it in january so it will be gone by 9 months pp.

9 months on, 9 months off.

Don't beat yourself up, but when you are feeling better after your first tri, you can start working out again for overall health. You'll be fine. =) Good luck!

@Chastenet: @rachiecakes: @BabyBoecksMom: @LindsayInNY: @Dandelion: @leelee: @mrsjyw: @catomd00: @LovelyPlum: @Beebug: @Lindsay05: @loveisstrange: Ladies, thank you ALL so much for your support and words of wisdom. It has been hard for me to let go of this and enjoy, and I am probably being too hard on myself. My doctor doesn't seem concerned, so I will just try to continue to monitor my food choices, get a little exercise when I can, and let it ride.

@plantains: @Bluebonnet: I'm 5'3 and have a very short torso, which was part of my concern. I had my doctor run tests to ensure that there was no medical issue going on (gestational diabetes, thyroid, etc.) but everything checked out - I'm a healthy girl.

@Ree723: @anandam: You're right - I probably was failing to factor in the honeymoon weight gain/the switch from eating like a spartan athlete to eating like a gal who just got married! Thanks for the perspective.

@gingerblonde: Agree with all the others. Unless I misunderstood, you had gained 8lbs just from honeymoon life before your BFP, right? So you've really only gained about 20lbs in the pregnancy which is pretty common, I think. I'm up 18lbs at 19wks and all my pre-pregnancy clothes still fit except around my belly/breasts, so I don't think it's an issue. Yeah the "guidelines" say 10 by 20wks, 25-35 by term, but there's no absolutes. If you're taking care of yourself and your baby, that's beauty! Don't be so hard on your mama self.

Ok,well first of all, factor in the 7-8 lbs you gained once you stopped with the super strict diet, and use that as your starting weight. Fad diet weights are not true weights unless you can maintain them once you start eating in a manner that has long term sustainability.

Now that we've sorted that, you started at 145 lbs, meaning you have gained 23 lbs so far at the halfway point in your pregnancy. Totally normal! Everyone gains differently. I'm pregnant with my second baby now and both times, I gained nearly all my weight in my second trimester. I'm thin to begin with but with both babies, I gained nothing in the first tri, and was up 19 and 20 lbs respectively by 20 weeks. With baby #1, I gained 32 overall. With baby #2, I am currently 33 weeks and up 27 lbs, having only gained a pound in the past month.

Your body is going to do what it wants/needs to do, so don't stress. But also, don't freak out that a significant weight gain at this stage is going to mean you're on track for a massive weight gain overall - it absolutely doesn't. Just relax and keep making sensible food choices whilst allowing yourself the odd indulgence when the mood strikes, you deserve it! :-)

Honestly, don't stress. I was much the same. I had gained 33lbs by 24 weeks, 53lbs by 36 weeks and ended somewhere close to 70lbs. I did yoga, walked, used the elliptical, didn't eat horribly... and yet I packed it on. Granted, I was very swollen and carried a lot of water weight, but still... I gained 3lbs just between my first appt at 6 weeks and my ultrasound at 7 weeks!

That being said, I lost it all.

Just eat healthy, stay active and don't let the numbers stress you out. If it becomes a problem, refuse to let them weigh you or if they insist, don't let them tell you or talk to you about your weight.

Dont stress over weight gain. Dr. Google is terrible for saying how much you should weigh. There are reasons you crave certain foods, your body is needing those calories. Just try and eat healthy most of the time and all is good.

+1 to others. You're growing another human being! Take care of yourself, eat as well as you can and what you feel like, if doctor isn't concerned, embrace the weight gain! I gained 60lbs with my first (starting weight was 140lbs near your start) and lost it all after. It was a huge shock for me, but I embraced the weight gain and realized the good reason it was for!

I gained 50 lbs and had it all lost by the time he was 9 months, with the vast majority coming off in the first month. No diet, no working out. Just BF was all! Of course healthy eating is a must, but don't let the weight gain prevent you from enjoying your pregnancy!

I gained a LOT of weight in my first tri, too. I attribute that to the carbs and my inability to exercise without getting sick. I'm now 24 weeks and up about 25 pounds.

I will say, though, that the rate that I'm gaining has slowed down CONSIDERABLY. As in, the last week, I didn't gain anything. I eat pretty well and am trying to drink more water and walk more, but really, there's not a lot I can do. My doctor doesn't seem concerned, and my husband and mom don't think I look like I've put on 25 pounds, which is good. But I hear you on the self esteem. Putting away medium maternity clothes for large ones was really, really hard.

As long as there's no underlying issue, I agree with PPs-we need to cut ourselves some slack! :)

As long as you're eating healthy, there's not a whole lot you can do about the number on the scale. Everyone gains at different times and paces, I really wouldn't worry about it.

My sister started out at 135 and was pushing 200 lbs with her first baby and within 3 months she was at her lowest adult weight ever - around 120-125. Also, she had a 6.5lb baby (my friend who started at around 105 lbs and gained hardly anything during pregnancy had an almost 9 lb baby). See how much variation there can be?!?!?

Talk with your doctor if you're concerned so they can rule out any other potential underlying medical conditions. Cheer up and cut yourself some slack, you're growing a baby! :)

@gingerblonde: my doc made me cry about my gain and I am glad she did in retrospect. I had an easy delivery and a 6 pound baby. She had me eat no more than 2400 calories a day and do smaller portions and less carbs. Please be sure to talk to your doc. I also walked a lot.

If your Doctor doesn't seem worried about it, I wouldn't worry about it. It's probably just the way your body handles pregnancy. Just relax and enjoy your pregnancy without worrying about the weight gain. If you worked hard to get the weight off before, you can do it again after you have your baby.

FWIW, there's a blogger I read on occasion who just announced her pregnancy. She's 16 weeks now and has gained 20 lbs. You can hardly tell from her pictures though. She's a majorly committed Crossfitter and I'm guessing the underlying muscle is helping "hide" some of that weight now? But, honestly, you can't even tell! Here's her first trimester summary with photos: http://carrotsncake.com/2013/12/first-trimester-recap.html

Here's another fitness blogger who's had 2 10lb babies. With her first (pre-fitness lifestyle), she gained 60lbs. I don't remember what she gained with her second but I think it was somewhere near that number too. And she was healthy during pregnancy and everything! Just how her body and babies wanted things :) Here: http://nataliehodson.com/blog/category/natalies-notes/fit-pregnancy/

I'm not pregnant yet but whenever that happens, I think I'm going to have to avoid the scale. Maybe have my doctor tell me overall gain as I go? Not sure yet. I'm just fearful that the rising numbers (even though it's a good thing!) will freak me out a bit. If I were you, just continue eating healthy and exercising. Try not to stress about the overall numbers as long as you're healthy. Maybe your baby just need a little extra nutrients!

Talk to your doctor, there maybe an underlying medical issue causing the weight gain. Have you been tested for gestational diabetes? A friend that had gestational diabetes when she was pregnant gained a lot of weight very quickly. Once they figured out she had gestational diabetes, she had to follow a specific diet, and hardly gained any weight the rest of her pregnancy (but she ate a lot of healthy food and wasn't deprived).

How tall are you? You just have to realise that it is only for this short amount of time and pregnancy will be over soon. Honestly, I think you should just try to enjoy the experience and relax. Keep eating properly and exercising as you are now. I lost 30 pounds of my baby weight by 5 days after delievring so that should tell you how much I gained:)

Girl I'm right there with you. I'm almost 19 weeks and I stepped on the scale yesterday at my appointment and I was 162, up from 146 at my 8 week appointment (which itself was wayyy up from the 135 I was just a few months earlier, although I can't really trust my home scale). I don't think I've been gorging myself. I eat salad, I honestly don't eat dessert most of the time, I never eat fast food. This happened just from me eating normally and not counting calories.

The good news is I've been here before with my last pregnancy. I stepped on my scale when I got home from the hospital and I was 200 lbs. 200!!! And I lost it very slowly through exercise and breastfeeding, and was back to my happy weight a year later. So I am not worried this time, just kind of depressed to see the scale creep into the 160s so soon.

Like the others have said, your body will gain what it needs. If you haven't been eating carbs, and now you are, your body will begin to store that. Just continue to eat right and do some light exercise and you'll be fine. :-)

I agree with @Chastenet - sometimes your body just does what it needs to do to grow a baby.
Just be sure to eat healthy and get some exercise, even if it's just a walk around the block a few times.

I gained half my body weight (I was around 120, ended up close to 180 at the end), I ate healthy and was very active until I was put on bed rest for pre-e at 37 weeks. I also lost the weight without much effort at all.
I remember seeing the scale at the doctor's office and freaking out seeing the numbers go up and up!

You know if your eating well I would try not to worry about it. The body is going to do what it's going to do during pregnancy...Maybe you're like me and you'll gain all your weight in the 2nd tri and nothing at the end...Maybe you'll gain steadily throughout. Just keep eating well and know that your body is doing what it needs to take care of your baby. It'll come off when baby is born.

I don't really know where else to turn for advice/support on this, so here goes.

I am 19 weeks today. I got pregnant on my honeymoon, and I had been following a pretty rigid diet up until the wedding to lose about 15 pounds (it's called Ideal Protein, basically no carbs, no sugar... lots of veggies and protein). I weighed approximately 138 at the wedding and had gained back 7-8 when I got home, just from eating normal food and drinking. Shortly thereafter, got BFP.

It's like my weight gain has skyrocketed through this whole pregnancy. I stepped on my scale this morning to see 167.5 pounds and I just about died. I can't believe I have managed to put on 30 pounds in 19 weeks.

I know it will come across like I am not keeping my diet under control. My husband backed me up today when I asked... my eating is NOT out of control. I manage my portions, log my food to ensure I am hitting the proper nutritional targets, and drinking lots of water. Yes, I do have an occasional soda or piece of chocolate, but no more than the average bear. I'm not sitting at home eating oreos by the bag.

My first trimester was rough, I have struggled with migraines and nausea, and the only thing that kept me from being ill was constant nibbling on carb-centric things, but even still, I was monitoring how much I consumed. I am wondering if I completely destroyed my body's metabolism with the diet before the wedding, or what could possibly be wrong. I exercise maybe twice a week, and I am registered to begin a prenatal exercise class for twice a week in January, which will be good.

Sorry for the novel-length post; I just feel extremely bad about about myself right now. Have never felt so unattractive and am afraid I will be the size of a manatee when I have this baby in May. Does anyone have any advice??
