@Mrs Green Grass: Since you've had a good sub, then don't worry about it! Do what's best for your family.

@MaisyMay: hmm...I wonder if a half-day would be possible. I've never seen it before. AP is 4 and 6.

I'm planning to say no today. I always put my students first and it's really hard for me not to, but they really will live. I had an excellent sub (ret. teacher who now teaches AP classes for teachers) and then a new teacher for semester 2. Englifhvis definitely not like calc since its a set of skills rather than discrete information. So it's not like I'm magically going to get someone to pass in 2 extra weeks. I've already had school dreams and a week and a half to prepare mentally and lesson-plan-wise is just not enough for me to stay sane.

I'll be the lone voice. I probably would go back. As somebody who taught for a year and as somebody who took AP classes, having my regular teacher who knew the material best would be a good boost before the exams.

Depending on which period AP is, could you go back for just mornings or just afternoons? That way the school would only need a half-day sub for you.

I don't think I would. You've had such a hard road, and though two weeks isn't all that long you'll never get it back. I'd spend it with D.

It's a hard decision but I wouldn't. I feel like you guys in the states don't get enough maternity leave anyway, without them asking you to go back early. You never get that time with your baby back! What a hard decision for you!

I had the opposite student perspective as Sarac: we had a sub for maternity leave my senior year for AP Calc, and it was a complete mess. I know (well, I guess I can't know, but I'm pretty sure) that his inability to explain material negatively affected my score on that exam. Now, it was Calc, not English, so reviewing actual practice problems was really important until the last second. We didn't exactly do that for our AP English exams, so I feel like this might be different.

Just thought I'd throw my two cents in. I totally understand wanting to stay at home, though!

I can tell you from the student perspective - the sub doesn't matter as much as you think. I had an experience like this and everyone still did fine on their IB tests.

I know where you are coming from. I am a teacher in a NON union state, but there is no way I would go back early. I could have gone back at 6 weeks, but took 8 weeks and don't regret it for one second. I also teach a state-tested subject and felt like I was screwing the kids out of getting a teacher to prep them, but they will do anything you ask of them...and especially if they are AP...they will more than likely score well on they test if they so choose to take it. I am suppppper work oriented and it has been so hard for me finding work-life balance and my career in teaching, but there is no way I'd go back early!

That's such a tough decision! If it was me, I wouldn't do it (and that's coming from a former workaholic). My maternity leave went way too fast and I would give anything to have just even just a few more days at home where I could be 100% devoted to LO.

My principal loves me and it doesn't matter to them much because there would just be another sub. It will not affect my job prospects in any way whatsoever and most of my superiors and coworkers would probably say to stay home....

I do consider myself really career oriented so this whole time off has been weird, but at the same time, I can never do this again (and we aren't planning to have more). I was even dept chair before I left.

I would do it only because you'll still get the whole summer with him, and you seem to have lots of reasons in the pro column. That is assuming that you have a childcare situation that you're comfortable with and that could start 2 weeks early.

I hate that they put you in this situation! But I see where it would be good for you to go back. I think you have to decide for yourself if you are ready to leave your son in order to do what's best for your students. I hate to make it sound like a him vs them, but it kind of it... going back would make school easier for them (and you) but staying these 2 weeks makes life easier probably for your family- definitely your son (and you!) So you just have to decide which "easier" is more beneficial to your well being, I guess. I don't think there's a right or wrong though. Just what you're ready for!

I don't know. I know you've had a lot going on but you have been off for a while so it's not quite like cutting the normal maternity leave from 8 weeks to 6 weeks. I think it would depend on how much I liked my job and wanted to be in good graces of leadership. I'm sure it would show them a lot of devotion if you help them out.

Negative ghost rider! Your pattern is full! I say this because my maternity leave is the only time in my life (other than my wedding) during which I was truly present. And I wouldn't trade that for anything!

ETA: you will likely regret it (you already know you don't want to) and the mommy guilt will be ridonc. Sometimes you just have to put yourself and your family first.

I teach HS English, so I am a union worker and my job will be affected in no way at all it I don't go back early.

BUT...it's going to affect me personally either way and so I'm really not sure what to do.

I do NOT want to go back to work early. I've only been home with lo for 6 weeks now even though I've been out of work for almost 7 months with pre-term labor and my micro preemie.

Whether I go back on April 22 or May 6, I will get out the 3rd week of June for the summer so I either work 8 weeks or 6.

The reason they asked is that my sub got a full-time
Job that starts on the 22nd.

Here are the issues:
1) two weeks is an awkward amount of time for a sub job - most units take 4-6 weeks.
2) I will probably have to do the lesson plans whether I teach them or not.
3) I teach AP and the test is the second week of May. I already feel like I'm screwing these kids out of being able to pass, but having a new teacher (again) 3 weeks before the test would be really bad.
4) the transition will be much smoother from the current sub to me. Having someone else in between will make the kids crazy (behavior-wise...not the AP kids, the other kids).

So school-wise, it would make the last 6 weeks easier if I went back early.

But I don't want to sacrifice two weeks with Dylan.

I have to let my VP know tomorrow.

What do you think?
