We went through something like this when E was about 18 months old. He would have bad diarrhea maybe twice a day and was randomly vomiting overnight for about 2 weeks. I had been keeping him out of daycare, but I needed to go back to work. The doctor ended up prescribing Alinia, which is an anitparasitic, even though they couldn't find any trace of parasites and a probiotic. He was remarkably better in 24 hours and completely back to normal after 48 hours.

Baking soda baths were great for helping his sore bum. I was never real precise with measurements. I just filled up the tub a bit and sprinkled a good amount in the bath.

@muffinsmuffins: our Dr told us to give 1/2 pk kids culterelle once per day. She also eats Greek yogurt + oatmeal + fruit mixed together for breakfast (10 month old). I serve it cold, so prefer to mix the culterelle in that, so I don't heat it and destroy any good properties.

@muffinsmuffins: I didn't think it was teething either. Some kind of rotten stomach bug. I tried probiotics (store brand infant kind) but it was hard to find something LO would eat them in. For the baking soda I just dumped some in! I think the first time I did 1/4c in a low bath and mixed it in. Good luck! I felt so terrible for LO when she was sick like that. Diaper free time with diarrhea is also gross.

@muffinsmuffins: rainbow light but there are lots of good options. Culturelle is easy because they sell it everywhere.

@Rockies11: someone to share in the misery! That makes me feel a little better, though I'm sorry it's going through your house too...especially around the holidays  I will try those creams and guess we may have to just ride it out as well...good luck to you!

ETA: what foods are you giving your LO's? Sticking to usual things or bland? I don't want to make it worse, but he started refusing the bananas and toast only pretty quick!

@MenagerieMama: I am totally thinking of doing that once I get to see the doc to calm my worries! My mom insists its teething but I doubt it because he never had this before...how much baking soda do you put in the bath? I'm seeing anywhere from 2 tbsp to a cup or more online?

@muffinsmuffins: we are currently in the midst of this! My 8 month old got it over the holidays, and I brought her in on day 4. They said it's viral diarrhea and that it can last up to 14 days! We are now on day 7 of it, with no sign of it relenting. I thought it wasn't viral since no one else had it, but then my toddler went down with it a few hours ago. So my sympathies. They recommended a combination of hydrocortisone cream, a lotion that neutralizes acid called calmoseptine, and a barrier cream over top for the diaper rash. I gave sitz bath today too - we will see if that helps.

This has happened to us before, though if LO was acting perfectly fine and eating okay we still sent her to daycare and blamed it on teething! Possibly not the right answer. But baking soda baths after poops and at least 2x a day were magic for her raw bum with the worst diarrhea bout.

My 13 month old son has had diarrhea for the past week. He has had 2 random episodes of vomiting and one evening of low fever, but otherwise the only constant has been 2-5 instances of diarrhea each day. We did the BRATY diet for the first 4 days with no change. We've now gone back to mostly regular food including whole milk with no change. We are travelling over the holidays so haven't been home to take him to the doctor, but we will over the weekend. I'm worried they'll just tell us there's nothing to be done, but he can't go to daycare if this persists. I thought with a tummy bug it wouldn't last this long? Anyone had similar problems? Any tips? He's also got a bad diaper rash of course...I feel terrible for his little bum!
