That if we want to take blame off of victims, we shouldn't be focusing all of our solutions on the victims. If we want to change our culture, major changes in the conversation need to happen. </p> <p>I still think it's good to have a variety of tools, but there should be tools added to prevent men from raping, too (more education on THEIR part instead of always on women's part, etc). Right now the toolset that exists is so one sided. Women shouldn't dress promiscuously, women have to say no assertively, women shouldn't drink too much, women should have buddy systems, women should wear certain nail polishes, etc. </p> <p>Right now in our culture if someone breaks into your house they don't blame you for not having strong enough locks or having too flimsy of windows that are easy to break into, or not having a sign in your yard saying not to break in. The culture around break-ins pretty heavily blames the criminal and the criminals are punished for it. You certainly want to use the tools at your disposal (locks, alarms, etc) to prevent it from happening, but there are also cultural norms against the thiefs side and laws against the thief that are enforced heavily. I think any rape prevention effort focused on anything besides stopping people from raping has the potential to increase perceived victim responsibility and blame. That being said, I do think those efforts are still important, it's just something we need to be cognizant of and careful to avoid. For example, telling women not to walk alone and not leave their drinks unattended, makes sense, and I think should be done... but you will get those people who say things like, "she shouldn't have been walking alone, or she shouldn't have left her drink." Now people may very well say, "she should have had the nail polish." I thought they did a great job talking about what consent is &amp; the impact of sexist language &amp; what men can do to help promote a climate where rape culture isn't tolerated. I know it was just a start, but at school they will put a hold on your account for not completing the program &amp; it's interactive so it forces ppl to participate. But i dont think the issues are the same. I dont have the ability to make everyone follow the law in other aspects of life. I cant keep people from trying to steal, so i lock my doors. I cant keep people from driving recklessly, so i wear a seatbelt. </p> <p>I dont think having a tool to protect yourself in any way eliminates the responsibility of the guilty party. I do feel like it is a tool to make women feel like they have a little more control in a world where, unfortunately, danger exists. I dont think it puts blame on the victim any more than any other protective measure we employ. </p> <p>Of course its not the solution to the bigger issue.
