I saw a derm about this. They just say its aging of the nails and there is nothing you can do about it. Mine haven't gone away. I just wear my nails short.

@lindseykaye: I did that and it eventually grew back with the crack anyway. I keep my nails short so I don't worry about it anymore.

@Foodnerd81: I've seen a tutorial using nail glue and tissue paper for fixing nail breaks really close to the nailbed so that sounds like a great solution to keep it together/attached while it grows out more.

@mrsjyw: It might be caused by a vitamin deficiency..? I would ask your doctor about it!

I saw a horizontal crack in the middle of my big toenail last month :( I'm keeping a bandage over it so it's covered and doesn't snag on anything. Hoping it'll just grow out so I can trim off the cracked part, but it looks like half the nail is gonna fall out :( Ick. I don't know how it happened.

nooooo!!!! that is my nightmare!!! I would cut it as short as I could get it and put a band aid on it. Maybe go to a nail salon and have them glue it to keep it from getting worse?

My right pinky nail always grows in with a vertical slit. It's really annoying because it catches on stuff, but I bet it is even more annoying on your thumb. I have no idea why it does that but it has for years. I've glued a bit of tissue and nail glue to keep it smooth for a manicure but mostly just file it short.

i noticed a vertical line in my thumbnail a few months ago and was hoping it'd go away. about a month ago, i noticed it had cracked! now there's a split that i'm hoping will grow out but no matter how much i file the vertical line down the center isn't going away and i feel like the nail is doomed to split when it it's the breakign point near the top of my nail!!!

any experience? how to fix it?!?!?!
