If you went 10 years without knowing her name, maybe she'll go 10 years without knowing you named your kid the same name!

Our last name is awkward to pair stuff with and it seems like most of the good names are already taken, so our kid will probably be sharing too!

My cousin wanted to name her son the same name as another cousin and I told her not to :p To me it's confusing for the rest of the family to not know which kid you're referring to.

Even though they live on another continent, our family is quite close, so to me it would depend on your family.

Name your kid whatever you want! I think it would be a bit of a different situation if the name was very unique. I have cousins (two years apart) with the same first name and it's totally not an issue for anyone.

If my husband's sister or my sister used the same name I'd be a little upset only because we see both families so often and go to church with my husband's sisters family. If it was any more distant than either sister doing it I wouldn't care at all. We even considered (and probably would have gone with) one of my husband's cousins names if we were having a boy.

My mom's cousin named their daughter my name and I love it! We're naming our son the same name as DH's cousin. Then again his cousin is 22 so I doubt he'd care. I wouldn't worry about it.

My dad's cousin named her daughter my first and middle name-- I was honored and I know my parents never minded. I was a flower girl at their wedding so it felt extra special to me, though we hardly ever saw them. Their second daughter is named the same as my younger sister. Neither are SUPER common names.

So, I say go for it. If anything, you are saying they have good taste. That said, I wouldn't do it with a first cousin (like, your sister's kid and your kid).

I am also curious as to what it is. I'm guessing Isabella. :)

I have two male cousins within a few years of each other with the same rare name! No one ever talks about the fact that one aunt was clearly "inspired" by the other! They just tell us Walter Cronkite was popular at the time :)

It sounds like this particular cousin is far enough on the family tree that you shouldn't feel bad at all!

We have a lot of the same names in my family, but that's because they were named after each other. Hubs and I want to use a family name, but only of someone that we would want to name our child after. We found a name we liked, but it's his cousin's husband's name and we just didn't want people thinking that baby was named after him, when it's not.

On my mom's side we have a Shea, Shayla, and a Shyla and the girls love it. I wouldn't worry about what everyone else thinks, they will get over it if they get a little upset.

I wouldn't worry about it. My sister and I "fought" over who gets to use my daughters name (she's named after our father David). In the end I used it because I was the one pregnant first. Plus, she wanted a different variation of the name and I told her that in 10 years when she has kids she should still use it (they would be cousins with the same first name).

You know, I used to think this was an issue and then I realized
1. My cousin's middle name is my brother's first name. They are less than a year apart and close.
2. A generation ago: My dad and his cousin (he only has 2 first cousins!) both have the same name. No. Really. I never even thought about it--just like @tejbee
(My grandma and her brother both chose the same name for their boys.)

I say go with what you want and don't care about much else. We had the hardest time agreeing on a name and didn't have one until the 2nd day at the hospital.

So after scrapping DH's original name choice and going through pretty much every name out there, we FINALLY chose a name for our little one. It's a common name, but we decided not to take popularity into account since it was hard enough agreeing on a name, and a popular name isn't a huge deal anyway.

We then found out that DH has a cousin (his dad's half brother's grandchild) that is named the same name. She's about 10. We NEVER see her and didn't even know her name until today, even though we do see her grandparents and aunt. It is a small side of the family (but spread around the country!) so there are only a few kids (one of which has another name we almost chose til we remembered her!)

We are planning to stick to our name choice. Would you be offended if someone else in your family picked your child's name? Would the fact that it is very common factor into it?
