@Ree723: I will say that we have a DS named Matthew. He gets introduced as Matthew (he's almost 16 mos). My mom tries calling him Mattie, but we said that's not his name! If he wants to use a nickname when he's older he can, but are not right now.

@ShootingStar: My brother and I went to the same university and I used to call his dorm and when I would ask for him by his full name, people were always like "who???, oh, you mean MATT". :silly:

Also, I love so many names on this thread!

@SweetiePie: this cracked me up!

@Ree723: the up-side of a one-syllable name is that there is no nickname for most of them. I'm also struggling with this because ALL of the boy names I like have nicknames that I don't like. but I don't think Henry lends itself to turning into Hank or Harry (love Henry but yuck and yuck)--would your husband agree to not call him Harry? I do know people named Matthew, Alexander, and Samuel, but man it is a seriously uphill lifelong battle for them to be called anything but Matt Alex and Sam. Also, I think with a name like that, a lot of it might depend on what your LO likes as they grow older, which we have no control over.

I don't really have any suggestions but if it helps - we have friends who call their kids exclusively by full names (don't want to say what they are in case they find this, but wall me if you want to know :-)) and that's all anyone calls them. I think when first born people shortened them a bit or asked "will you call him xxxxx?" And they either corrected or answered no. It seems to have worked.
I'll admit I DID eye roll a bit when she immediately said "it's blahblahdeblah not blah or blah" when someone tried to shorten it. But that was before I had a kid of my own and saw how it can be annoying when people change or misspell his name...and I also find her kinda annoying. 😄 So I think that had more to do with it than anything else.

Thank you all!! There are some amazing suggestions here - several of which have been tossed around by us in the past and definitely need to be revisited! Natalie, Alastair, Oliver, Victoria, and Benjamin are all back up for discussion now...

Some of the names mentioned above that we love have already been taken by close family members - Declan, Sarah, Miles, Alexander, Vivienne (DD1's middle name is Vivian), Andrew, and James - so those names are all definitely out of the running unfortunately. And whilst I LOVE the names Amelia, Evelyn, and Eleanor, I think they're all too similar to DD1's name...

Back to the negotiating table with DH and a whole slew of new name suggestions for him! Thanks everyone! :-)

Claire would go so beautifully with your daughters' names! I'd say go back and look at names popular in the time of the Brontes since that seems to fit your style well. For girls, Julia, Victoria, Amelia? For boys, Felix, Charles, Miles?

I think Isabelle is a great stand alone name, and people wouldn't automatically shorten it- I think once you get the extra syllable on Isabella people start doing it more. Matthew I do think you would have a hard time getting everyone to avoid Matt- not as a baby but once he has his own friends it may get tougher.

I like Claire and Clara (very partial to Clara :silly: ). We also considered Hazel, Alice, Eleanor/ Nora, Margaret (nn Maggie or Greta).

We had the hardest time with boy names. Probably would have done Lucas so no help.

We have really similar taste in names!

For boys: George, Theodore or Edward (nn Teddy), John (nn Jack - my son's name so I'm biased!), Louis, Andrew, Charles (nn Charlie), William, Philip, Samuel (nn Sam). For a little more flavor, you could try Lawrence (nn Laurie) or Francis (nn Frank). And, I personally love Henry/Harry but that's me!

For girls, I like Caroline, Claire (love!), Eleanor or Eloise (nn Ellie), Samantha, Margaret (nn Maggie or Molly). For a little more flavor, maybe Cecelia, Laurel, Beatrice, Lydia, or Corinne .

I think nicknames can be essentially established by parents, so I'm all for keeping the formal name that you want. If parents pick the nickname and just reiterate it and reinforce it over and over and over in passing, others will likely pick it up too, especially because oftentimes, the child will self-identify with that nickname. For Isabelle, nicknames that could work are:

- Lele (like lay-lay)
- Isa (like Lisa without the L)
- Ellie

Henry is a great name and probably because I love old men names on little boys, I think Harry is really cute. Other nicknames for Henry are Hank and Huck, and I think they are also pretty cute.
