Didn't read through all of the responses but I know a Virginia whose nickname is "Ginna" / she is an adult and people call her Ginna instead of Virginia. Ginna like Jenna but with "jin" at the beginning instead of "jen" (not like gee-na, if that makes sense!)

@math.nerd: It might be a bit of a stretch for Virginia . . . What about Evan? It's closer to Virginia (than Everett), has a V, is unisex, and could also use a nn like Evie if you wanted.

For anyone still playing:

I had a thought about the name Everett this weekend. I quite like it - Evie can be a nickname, it's got a bit of a unisex vibe and it does have a V in it - but here's the question - does it still honor Virginia? Or is it too much of a stretch?

Thanks for playing! :-)

I love the name Virginia and think it goes with Simon. I'm a sucker for honoring people with the actual name, but that's just me. I also think of naming someone after someone as a way of remembering them. Both my kids are named after family members and I love that when I hear their names I often think of the beloved family member.

In terms of name suggestions, I adore Georgia if you decide to go with a "location theme" name.

I know two little girls named Virginia (neither goes by Ginny) and no adults, it's funny how names get associations in our minds because I see that as a baby's name more than a grandmother!

@CObee: I quite like Evie - maybe short for Evelyn. But I don't looooove it :-) plus our one-year old next door neighbor is Evie, short for evelyn, so there's already a "baby evie" in my son's life. I know that's not a reason to do it, but it's always something, right?

@math.nerd: FWIW - I named LO1 my grandmother's name. It took me a while to come around to the name because of the same reason (I associated it so much with my grandmother and I couldn't imagine a small person with that name). But, we kept coming back to the name (which is also DH's great grandmother's name), and finally it made it to the top of my list.

But now I'm sooo glad we went with the name. Its perfect for LO, we get tons of compliments on her name, and she has a special connection to my grandmother.

Verona or Vienna are cities in the state of Virginia. I'm currently stuck on the name Vivian (Vivi for nn) as we both have a grandmother with that name.

My name is Blair which was my mother's maiden name. I love how I received my name, and I love that it was a unisex name growing up and how it is not that common. I always get compliments on it. I feel like it is becoming a slightly bit more common, and people are adding an "e" to it to feminize it, but I still will be using it as a middle name for a child. Elliot also makes a great unisex name too!

@Pollywog: Her middle name was Claire and her maiden name was Landry - I've thought about those, but haven't really mined them yet for good ideas. There might be something in Landry - but it makes me think of Landry from Friday Night Lights!!

@ChiCalGoBee: Yes - I'm Jewish which is why I feel like I need to use the V! @LCTBQE: And YES! I agree - I'm trying to find the balance between honoring tradition, which is important to me and giving my kid a name I feel good about for the rest of her life :-)

@Hypatia: Elizabeth is actually my middle name!

@Anagram: Virginia is actually a lovely name, but I think that the irony is that I associate it SO much with my grandmother that I can't think of it as the name of a little baby or toddler or middleschooler or anyone younger than 70! I think if it wasn't her name I would love it - so ironic! But maybe I'll come around....

@jape14: You've got your finger on the pulse of my family! My cousin is Hannah, my niece is Lucy, my sister is Rebecca and my middle name is Elizabeth!

Thank you everyone!! I might actually be coming around to Virginia - I do love the nn Ginny. But keep the suggestions coming! I love this stuff.

I think Virginia Claire sounds beautiful, but if you don't like it, maybe consider a name with a similar meaning. I did a meaning search on Baby Center for "pure" or "virgin" like Virginia and there are a ton of beautiful suggestions. One that stood out was Reina (and a variety of different spellings) I liked that it had a royalty feeling in addition to the purity.

I think if choosing an honor name is important then just go with the actual name rather than picking something totally different that you also don't love because they are similar or have the same nickname, etc. We chose an honor name that I didn't love but the person we were honoring I did love very much so it has really grown on me. Personally, I would go with Claire as a middle name.

I love both Virginia and Claire and think Virginia Claire sounds great as a first/middle combo. You could also keep either as a middle name, but it seems like Claire works better as a middle name. Other names that seem to match with Simon for me, with Claire as a middle name:
Hannah
