@Nonimouse: it don't think it handles as well but we like the AWD and it's definitely way roomier inside. The VW had gotten kind of cramped! Cargo space is about the same. We're getting 28 mpg, obviously can't compete with the diesel. Overall we are happy with the purchase, we're def wagon people, the small/midsize SUVs we looked at all seemed so smushed to us

ETA: yea I just didn't think we could justify the opportunity to get that price for the car (not including the extra money you'd get either way). If you like the VW I know my aunt did the buyback and bought a fixed tdi that had been sitting on the lot for a while and so basically ended up with a brand new (but older model year) car and 8k back or something crazy.

@tequiero21: I used to live in NJ and can see how the run flats would be annoying on the winter worn roads. I'm in SC now so they haven't been an issue for me as our roads tend to be pretty good. There is a BMW spare tire kit you can buy if he wants to ditch the run flats.

(Was it possible to start driving at 14? or am I confusing when I got my first job which was 14.) I know I studied for my permit and got my permit right away and I think I got my license like 3-6 months later. I turned 16 in 1999.

@Littlebit7: Yeah your own spot in a private garage is the DREAM!
The cost of parking is bananas. We do pay close to $800 a month but only because it's IN our building. Like off of our lobby is an entrance to the garage and it's always sitting there waiting for us. Our last building didn't have a garage so we parked 2 blocks away and paid wayyyyyyy less.

@gotkimchi: I bought it 2 years ago, it had 34,000 miles and I added an extended warranty.
I've had the dumbest things happen to it, the aux battery died and we were trapped in the car (for a few minutes) on a blazing hot day, the rearview mirror fell off, the line that opens/closes the gas hatch broke. The low tire pressure light has been on since the day I bought it and I did replace the tires. I'm sick of old car problems. And it doesn't have bluetooth, lol

@SweetiePie: the guys at our garage were just morons, but moreover it was run by a douchebag. I guess it was a "you get what you pay for" but I couldn't fathom paying $800 a month to park my car. And this place was a reputable garage chain you'd recognize. I tipped, dropped off cookies, you name it. I got into the car one day (the window was down like it always was) and there was paint inside the car. PAINT! Their response: " oh well they were painting the ceiling". Ummm. Wtf.
So happy to be done with them and have my own spot.

@Littlebit7: I have actually been pleasantly surprised by how little our car has been damaged by the parking garages where they park for you. We've had two cars in two garages over the last four years and only one, the previous one, had a scratch. We've now had our new car for a year this month and not a single thing is on it. Just the damage I've done to the rims. Which the dealership already told me is the most common damage they see and not that big of a deal, but we want to fix it anyway to avoid any nonsense.
I think it has to do with being monthly rather than someone just parking for the day. We tip them every time we get the car, so I think they like us. We give a generous Christmas bonus every year. And it's also a nice car so I think they might be more afraid.

@SweetiePie: that's good to know. We also park in a newly acquired assigned space in a garage (we used to park in a public garage and got door dings, before that on the UES our car was parked for us in a garage...ugh those guys were the worst)
I had hoped that dealers would be realistic regarding city driving/dings and such. So it's nice to hear that might be the case. Our current rims are pretty dinged too.

@Littlebit7: We also drive very little. I think we get the 10k miles per year allowance and we are also around 5-6k miles per year. Maybe even less.
We park in a garage so our chances of scratches and dings is way less than street parking. And if we drive within the city we park in another garage. But usually we are leaving the city to go somewhere.
The dealerships seem to expect some scratches and dings on city cars. We did have a small scratch from the garage in our last car and they didn't even note it when they did the final inspection before we turned it in. Like he saw it but was like "meh".
We have killed our rims by parallel parking (outside of the city). But we plan on getting those fixed for a pretty reasonable rate before we turn it in.

@SweetiePie: we are considering leasing our next (larger) car as well. We live near the city. We drive so little (less than 6k per year) that one of those low mileage leases actually makes sense.
So since you live in the city does leasing worry you as far as damage? Scratches? We bought our vw from their CPO program and it had a big scratch already under the bumper so that took the stress away from me getting "the first scratch".

@Truth Bombs: @SweetiePie: Leasing gets a bad rap, but we lease our current two cars because they're both electric. The lease on my current car is so good that we're basically paying for 9 months and getting 3 for free. I think, as with anything, you need to do some research before deciding.

I also think that the whole driving cars until they die mentality is going to get shifted in the next 15-20 years as technology changes and manufacturers produce fewer gas powered cars.
