@lady baltimore: believe me, I tried to figure this out since I have three daughters  I could probably peel off the iron-on stuff but that seems like a lot of work. If we had the actual dresses/blouses, I’d definitely resell those!!

@PinkElephant: Gotcha. I was never a scout, so I assumed all of the flair went on the sash.

@lady baltimore: generally you can't hand down Girl Scout uniforms, because badges/petals must be "earned" before they're affixed to the vest or sash, so each girl starts from zero.

@Corduroy: My daughter is a Daisy and without even thinking about safety, I honestly just find this kind of personalization a little odd. Like, what's the point of it, I guess, is my question? I kind of thought you were "supposed" to keep the uniforms looking uniform anyhow - there's a pretty strict layout for all the bits and pieces (but the back where you sew on event badges I guess is more open to interpretation)

For my daughter, who is in first grade this year, she really isn't anywhere with her troop that I'm not, for the most part, and takes off her vest half the time anyway, so I wouldn't be too worried about someone using her name to lure her. Plus, you may want to point out to the other moms that their DD's hair is likely to cover the spot they'd put the name, anyhow! For this point, I started at the very bottom when putting my DD's activity badges on the vest.

I wouldn't do it. The safety thing would cross my mind, but having the ability to resell/hand down the uniform that will only get slightly used would seal the deal.

I probably have the same stranger training but it weirds me out a little. It’s popular here though on lots of kid things. I did a monogram on my daughter’s K backpack - still personal but less obvious.

Little kids have so much wonder when people know their names that I wouldn’t personalize a young child’s belongings. For me 5 yrs old is still on the too young side. What’s the purpose of putting their names on the sashes and vests? By week two everyone will know each other’s names. There’s enough embroidery things to personalize the sashes if the worry is all the earned badges will be sewed on by the parents the exact same way.

A quick way to personalize is to use a safety pin and put different color beads on it and the girl dictates the order of the beads too.

I think the line for me is if your daughter understands that just because someone knows her name that they're ok. Younger kids might just go with someone if they know their name, older kids will most likely be like who the heck are you? So 5-7 years old it would come down to the individual kid 🤷🏼‍♀️

Thoughts on visible names on clothing?

DD is in Kindergarten and joined a daisy Girl Scout troop this year. The leader suggested getting their names embroidered on the backs of their vests and all the parents agreed. Later the same evening we were talking about our first cookie booth and how the girls would obviously need to wear their vests/uniforms. I asked if anyone wanted to revisit the names on the vests thing, thinking about the girls being out in public. Everyone was still fine with it. Logically I don't think anything will happen. She's not going to be alone anywhere public in the ages she's wearing this particular uniform (K & 1st). I'm just not used to being the biggest worrywort. Usually I'm far from it. However, I've had a few interactions at my local grocery stores specifically which lead me to remove my work badge before entering because I don't want anyone to see my first and last name. Of course, that's first and last name and I think first and last is different.

Am I just showing my 80s stranger danger training?
