I had to veto the name that I'd ALWAYS been planning on naming my future daughter. The name was Kathryn and my husband said he'd call her Kathy. I was all "WTF - that's not even a common nickname! Call her Kate instead!" And he was all "I hate the name Kate!" For the most part, no one really has a problem using the long version So for our kid, I think the same situation would probably go. My aunt did it, though, and it actually worked out for her. My cousin is named Michael, and from very early on she corrected people when they tried to call him Mike. She said it was either Michael or Miko. Fifteen years later, I never hear anyone call him Mike.
