Update... We found out the sac hadn't passed when we thought it had, so that put things in a bit of a holding pattern for us. dH and I haven't gotten to the "moving on" point we thought we were at until today.

Thank you for all the ideas. I'm hoping as things normalize for us soon we might talk about naming the baby. I appreciate all the input!

I'm so sorry for your loss.

We named both our miscarried babies very early on and we didn't know the gender, but we prayed for a while about what the names should be. In both cases we felt strongly they were girls, so we gave them girl names. The names were inspired by Bible verses that came to me during my mourning period. Ultimately, we sent announcement cards with their names and those verses to close friends and family.

Naming the girls helped us enormously during our grieving period because we could talk about them as people and memorialize them. It also helped us to know that although they were here very briefly, they were acknowledged by their parents as having fulfilled God-given purpose. I saved one of the cards from each announcement and intend to get them framed at one point.

I was going to say Francis/es but I think it's even sweeter that it would include a piece of you. Does your DH have a patron saint for the middle name?

I'm so sorry for your loss :(

We're Catholic, too, and we named both of our angel babies. Originally, we were looking at saints' names, but two other names appealed to us, neither of which were saints. We decided to use them (Elliot for the first baby, Payton for the second) along with family names for middle names. Our hospital gave us "Recognition of Life" certificates, and it's so nice to have something physical to remember our babies by.

You have some great suggestions here! I hope that whatever you choose, naming your angel helps to bring some peace to you and your SO.

First I'm so sorry for your loss. I think there are some great suggestions already here (some I may even use myself). I know you were looking for gender neutral, but St. Catherine of Siena is the patron saint of miscarriages and infant loss.

I'm so sorry for your loss. I had a couple of ideas. First, do you know whose feast day was on your due date or another day related to your baby? We always prayed to that saint as a patron for our LO. Alternately, there are several saints who are patrons of babies - Sts. Nicholas, Philip, Brigid are some I know. Another less traditional idea would be Innocent (I'd be more likely to use it as a middle). While perhaps too literal feeling, the Holy Innocents are patrons of babies, and there are several popes with the name. Finally, Our Lady of Guadalupe is the patroness of the unborn, and I remember lots of older male saints took a form of Mary as a middle name, so while not entirely gender neutral, I might use Maria or some such in the middle. I do love the suggestions of Jude and Frances above. I think I might got with Maria Jude or Nicholas Innocent (with Nicky as a unisex nickname).

If you feel comfortable doing so, let us know whatever you choose. I'll be keeping you in my prayers and would love to pray for your baby by name.

I am so sorry for your loss. :( I miscarried at 7 weeks. We are not Catholic, but mt husband and I buried the baby (TMI, but embryo had come out intact) beneath a tree and carved a cross into the tree. We didn't name the baby, but the burial gave us peace. I think anything that provides confort is a good idea.

I'm not Catholic, but I love names...

Frances is great... If you want other options, there's also:
St. Marian
St. Agape (agape means love) - maybe for a middle name?
St. Adrian
St. Morgan

@MaryM: i am so sorry for your loss! We had a missed miscarriage in November at 12 weeks and decided to name the baby. I had a feeling it was a girl is we went with a girl name but there is no way to know. My MIL did a plaque for us at a similar site at our church. As far as names, my first thought was Julian partly because I love Julian of Norwich...I hope you find something that is a good fit for you.

Sorry for your loss! Don't know many saints, but I like all the names everyone suggested. I think Frances is good since it ties to u too. We were boring. Named it baby last name. Literally, baby lol. Sounds silly now, but we couldn't think of a name to put on the death certificate, which we wanted just as a proof or something that we had a baby.

@sugar.biscuit, I like Gabriel a lot too. And the thought behind it

My middle name is Frances, so that was my first thought, but figured I should have a few ideas to discuss with dh so I didn't seem totally selfish! Though a son would be named after him (he's a junior) so maybe this is my chance.

So sorry for your loss. Dh & I felt the same about our loss & choose to name it Gabriel after the messenger angel. We believe God was sending us a message & preparing us for the blessings yet to come. I posted a few threads about it a little over a year a go. Do what your family needs to help you grieve. Every night we pray for all our children's saint's (Gabriel, Michael, & Isabelle) to watch over us & to pray for us. It brings us such peace & happiness knowing our baby is watching over their brother & sister.

I recently miscarried in my 8th week, and DH and I are working with coming to terms with it. He has remarked on how much it sucks to have something so special taken away that didn't even have a name.

I learned tonight that my church has an "angel wall" where they list unborn babies and young children who have died so that they can be acknowledged and prayed for.

I think this is making me really want to name the baby, and that it would help me in grieving.

But I am at a loss on gender neutral names DH and I would consider for a child. Any ideas? Bonus points if it's catholic/a saints name.

Thank you!
