You definitely have to pay more if you want to pay over the table, not only to cover the taxes but you have to add in the fact that it's now traceable income. Additionally, you usually have to pay more for that amount of hours bc it's not a full-time position.

@mrsrain: It's just like online dating or recruiting for any other job. You should just expect a majority of applicants to be a poor match. Just ignore the chaff and keep your standards high. It will be worth it.

@mrsrain: try using this free calculator and fill out the employer expenses side and see how much extra you would have to pay to keep salary the same and if it's doable, advertise that amount? http://www.myhomepay.com/Resources/Nanny-Tax-Calculator

Do you know anyone in your area that uses a nanny that might have a friend or acquaintance? Or maybe a local college student that might want some extra hours?

We got lucky and found ours through our old daycare. We actually wanted to pay under the table, but she wanted to be legit as she wants the proper records so she can buy a home in the next few years. We also pay mileage, have workers comp, do a minimum payment of 45 hours a week, and pay out her taxes at the same time as her paycheck and save the money in a separate account. it all adds up!

I have a few friends that found great nannies through care so I would just keep searching there if nothing else.

good luck!

Yeah, we pay above board and pay a bit more than we otherwise might to compensate.

I had good luck with Care.com the first time and crappy luck the second time. We ended up having to use an agency the second time, which sucked because it was expensive, but I will say, the woman came through in spades with a candidate and we've had our fantastic nanny going on two years.

This may sound dumb but I think for a lot of people the fear of taxes is the fear of the unknown. They want to know exactly what their take home pay is going to be.

Can you spell that out in your listing on Care.Com or maybe just for a candidate.

Say the going rate in town is $10/hr. Explain that with the 6.2% and 1.45% in taxes, you are increasing their pay by that much to help cover that. So you'll pay them $10.77/hr to help cover that difference. In the end their take home is the same.

@Anagram: It's so frustrating! Especially because we really can't afford to pay higher rates.

@mrsrain: You are not the only one. In my area, it's really difficult to find someone who is willing to be paid above board. There was a survey done and something like 88% of working nannies in my town are paid under the table, so nannies know they can always get a job with another family who isn't taking taxes out. The difficulty is that if you want to pay a nanny above board, you have to pay them a lot more so that their take home pay equals the going rate in your area. Some states also require worker's comp and unemployment, plus my state has a small 'family leave' fund that all workers have to pay in--so all of that has to be covered by a nanny family if they want to give their nanny a competitive wage.

One of my neighbors asked her nanny to go legal so they could start claiming the 5k tax refund for child care, and the nanny said she would quit. So they didn't do it.

You may have to offer a higher hourly rate so that the nannies take home pay is similar to that of a nanny who is being paid under the table -- at least that is what is common here.

We are attempting to hire a part-time (24 hours a week) nanny for our two kids (1 and 3) as I am going back to work part-time in a couple of weeks. We are struggling!

I posted on care(dot)com and I swear half the people don't actually read the job description before they apply. I have had to turn down people outright because their schedule does not match up. I ended up with 4 applicants whose profiles all fit our needs, including indicating that they are willing to have SS/Medicaid withheld. Two of the four did not respond to my request for a phone interview, and the other two both said they want to be paid under the table.

I don't know what to do now. Obviously we will keep looking, but I did not expect it to be a struggle to find someone who is willing to be paid legally.

Am I the only one who has run into this issue? Am I missing any great venue for locating a nanny?
