@youboots: I do agree with you that as a former live-in FT nanny, I remember so much how well the family treated me! In the smallest ways though, like buying me some of my favorite foods while they were grocery shopping, or letting me have certain days off when I asked far enough in advance, letting me fly my friends out to stay/visit me and giving me an extra day off for that, etc. I don't think thoughtful/kindness extends only to monetary amounts (I'm not saying you were saying that, but I think that's why people though $200 seemed like a lot).

@winniebee: As a former nanny, I think $50 is great!

In the past I have received nice gifts from employers; a scarf from a cute local boutique, homemade goodies, gift cards, etc. I think $50 is perfect. If you don't know what store to get it, maybe a visa giftcard or cash instead so she can spend it anywhere?

Well I guess I'm in the minority. Thanks for pointing that out. I should say, if you can afford it spoil her, since the op mentioned they really like her. I was a nanny and my family treated me really well. I still remember their kindness and that was almost 10 years ago.

Our nanny's birthday is on Christmas but she'd only been with us for 3 weeks at that point. I did a combined birthday/Christmas gift and gave her $100 cash, a $25 starbucks gift card, a starbucks travel mug, and some tea I knew she liked (saw the bags in my trash can - I'm a little creepy). Anyway, I think $50 gift card or cash is fine, and maybe a smaller token item (mug with her initial?) or a cupcake or something.

@youboots: $200 gift card for a PT job? Dang, are you hiring?

I would give $50 tops. Probably to her favorite restaurant, or salon, if she has gone. I also like the Amex gift cards because they can be used anywhere. Or an Amazon gc.

$50 is more than generous. You're not being cheap. $100+ gifts are usually reserved for my spouse or immediate family and to me seems rather excessive for a part-time nanny.

If she's outdoorsy, REI or Patagonia might be nice for gear or clothing. And they both have outlets and online stores. Otherwise, perhaps a fun restaurant or specialty market?

We usually do something small for birthday and then something nicer/bonus at Christmas. I've done a nice bouquet of flowers and cupcakes from a local bakery or an American Express gift card and a small gift (hand lotion or a scented candle- she likes candles), etc. But I think $50 is a good amount to spend!

ETA: and LO usually makes her a card which she always loves!

for an employees birthday, i probably wouldn't do more than a card and have LO scribble in it. But if i did get a gift card, i would put max of $50. I figure Christmas bonus/gift is more traditional and would do something more then.
