We had a nanny and this is what we did

- PAY: also used Breedlove/My Home Pay (now part of Care.com)
- CAR: nanny showed proof of insurance and we bought extra seats. NOTE - if your nanny won't be keeping the seats in all the time (ex - they have older kids, etc) - make sure you get car seats that are easy to install and uninstall
- ACTIVITIES: We paid for classes and had a membership to the children's museum
- FOOD: she was welcome to eat whatever we had, we also purchased things we knew she liked.
- VACATION: we got burned with paid time off (we did PTO which was sick/vacation combined, so think carefully how you structure this. Ideally, you'd want your nanny to use vacation time after they accrue it (ie- you don't want them taking off a week the first month they are with you).

Also know that there will be times when your nanny will need off with little or no notice (illness, family emergencies, etc), which means you'll have to scramble to cover.

We had a written contract outlining our expectations:
-picking up after the kids (cleaning the table, doing breakfast, lunch, snack dishes)
- preparing and washing bottles
- doing the kids laundry
- making sure the kids toys are picked up
- no visitors
- limited cell phone use while the kids are awake
- daily sheet (similar to daycare)

Discuss if she's like to babysit nights/weekends (and determine that rate).

PAY: Use a payroll system because while it is extra money they take care of everything. We use Breedlove and it is awesome. No complains in the almost 4 years we have used them.
CAR: just buy extra carseats? do you pay mileage? insurance? I use my bosses car but my nanny friends all have carseats given to them to use in their car. Some pay milage and some just give extra gas money and call it even. All nannies pay their own insurance as far as I know.
- ACTIVITIES: Give cash for the week or a day to cover? My bosses just give me cash whenever I need it. I know some families give debit/ credit cards, especially for those that do things like grocery shopping.
- FOOD: do you buy food for her? Ask her what she like so you can have some stuff on hand but also offer her to eat anything in the house.
- VACATION: 3 weeks is good but I would do all three paid.
- SICK TIME: I think 3-5 sounds good.
- CURRICULUM? This is up to you and your nanny. My family has the older child in preschool and I do pickup/drop off but I still work on reading/ writing/ math/ crafts but it is very informal.

ETA- Ask her if any of her friends would be interested in being back up sitters for date nights and times when she does call in sick.

Hi all - hoping you can help!

We are in an interesting new situation. Our daycare just informed us they were shutting down in 60 days. CUE PANIC.

But we spoke with one of our favorite teachers and she has agreed to be our nanny once the school closes!! She has been my older son's teacher for the last couple years so this is ideal... and she knows our 7 month old too :)

This will be our first nanny - and her first time nannying... What do we need to know? Give me your best tips/advice.

Some things we're discussing/deciding/wondering:
- PAY: may do a mix of taxable & under the table
- CAR: just buy extra carseats? do you pay mileage? insurance?
- ACTIVITIES: Give cash for the week or a day to cover?
- FOOD: do you buy food for her?
- VACATION: we're thinking 3 weeks vacation, 1 week unpaid of her choosing, Xmas week off paid, and whatever week we take off, paid
- SICK TIME: 3-5 paid sick days? what happens if they're not used at the end of the year?
- CURRICULUM? Do you have them come up with something with some input from us? This is mainly for our older son... I want him to have some structure still in the house. We're also going to sign him up for some local classes, and I'm hoping she'll get together with some other friends/kids for playdates for the kids to hang out.

WHAT ARE WE FORGETTING????

We have some time - going to meet this friday for more discussion and nailing down the pay structure... she won't be starting until July. THANK YOU.
