Since we have no family near by, I asked a few people if they were willing to be "on call" and had 3 or 4 possibilities. We didn't have a nanny, but paid the person a set price for overnight care for what turned out to be from about lunch time the day my water broke until the next morning when my husband went to pick up my son. Luckily, I didn't go into labor in the middle of the night, but I would have expected (without that sounding too demanding) the main on call person to have their phone on in the middle of the night as the due date got closer.

I am thinking about the same thing. It's a little different because my mom is a short flight away and not necessarily able to hop on a plan short notice this time.

We will have on of our sitters on stand by, and it might end up being a while before my mom can come and relive her. I plan on working out a day rate for her and giving her something for being "on call".

I was just backup in case she went into labor before her mom arrived for the week (and she did, the night before!) I had the children during the vast majority of daytime hours anyway, so just kept my phone on at night and was ready to cancel after work plans. I loved my work family. It didn't feel like an imposition.

@T.H.O.U.: yeah I would say within 30 mins! I'm only thinking of an emergency labor situation really. My labors have been a slow and steady burn (even when induced) so I'm thinking one of the grandparents would have enough time to get here anyways!

I would define what you mean by on call as much as you can. Do you want her to be at your house within 30 minutes? Within an hour? Is it only on call over night?

I was on call when I was a nanny and they had baby number three. No bonus for being on call, but I got a flat fee for coming at 2am, I think. I had done overnights for flat fees before and I think it was the same. Or maybe it was time and a half from them until the normal day time, I forget. Either is fair.

I would consider giving her some kind of bonus for the on call time. When I've been on call for jobs, it has included a small (I'm a social worker, so, you know, peanuts) daily stipend. I had to be within a certain traveling distance, keep my phone on, couldn't drink, etc.
oh- and I'd give her time and a half for abnormal hours.

I would pay her time and a half if she has to come over at abnormal times of day (or weekends if she doesn't usually work them). I don't think you need to pay her extra for the entire on-call period, but maybe give her a nice bonus and a gift for going out of her way to be helpful? She sounds like an awesome nanny.

Our closest family lives 1.5 hours away, so in the event that I go into labor with DS3 overnight or if there is an emergency, I'd like to ask our local nanny to be *on call*. AKA come to the house and wait for our family to arrive. I'm sure she will be agreeable to it, but I'm wondering how I should address paying her in this scenario? Obviously, I'll pay her for it. If it's overnight, should I pay her time and a half? Do I need to pay her for generally being "on call" for me as I get closer to labor?? I have about 6 months to figure it out :silly:
