Check your benefits and have DH check his benefits too. Many larger companies provide access to back up child care (usually Bright Horizons).

Thanks everyone for the suggestions. I did some googling to see if there is an "on-call" babysitting service in my area for the next time this comes up.

I would suggest looking in your area to see if there is drop-in childcare as well.

Also check sittercity.com - some of the nannies check the box "available last minute" and you can call them a a back up option. I think having 2-3 people in your phone for situations like this could be helpful.

Do you have any friends who are SAHM's that you could ask to watch your LO just once or twice?

we just suck it up, but there is a backup babysitting service that comes within the hour in our neighborhood that many people use. they charge $20/hour and everyone is supposed to be really qualified and cpr certified.

my friend whose children are in daycare has at least 2 backup sitters that she can call.

We are in a similar situation although our nanny isn't fully sick but on her way. DH and I can both work from home so we usually split the day with one doing morning and one doing the afternoon shift.

We take LO to daycare, so when he has a fever he isn't allowed to go. In that case, either DH or I have to either work from home or take time off. DH is allowed to work from home. With my current job, I am not allowed to work from home so I have to take time off.

do you have any drop in backup daycare centers near you? bright horizons centers usually have them. also some workplaces offer backup in home care programs where they have contracts with nanny services that will send someone for the day, sometimes they'll even pay a portion because it saves them from having employees out.

If you have a Bright Horizons center near you; some centers provide back-up daycare options on a day-by-day basis.

My nanny has been sick this whole week and hubs and I are taking turns staying home with the baby. It isn't the worst case scenario since he has time banked and I can do some work from home, but it still stresses me out. Again, not career threatening, but I had to cancel a meeting today.

What are my other options? My family is close but still an hour away and they work too and because I work, I don't really know of any SAHMs that I could maybe ask for help or a playdate (and he is still a little young for playdates).

When your childcare provider is sick, do you just suck it up and take time also?
