So - DH and I discussed last night...I asked him to be very "real" about if he is going to come home early and send her home early...so we can properly calculate it!

Here is what we plan to offer her:

Salary - 3pm to 5:30pm, each day, 2.5 hours a day. 5 days a week. $160 per week - all in (this includes a gas subsidy). This works out to $28/day, plus $20/week in gas. With more than 2 weeks notice - we can adjust the schedule for a day or two. With 1 months + notice we can scrap a whole week. This allows he to plan/budget/source extra hours accordingly. If DH sends her home at 4:30pm...then she'll still be paid the full day.

I think it will be good for her to have guaranteed hours and pay. Hopefully she agrees.

I would pay a flat rate, especially because it sounds like you don't know which days or when DH will be home early, so you are basically still asking her to be available until 5:30 every day. If he happens to get home early, i wouldn't cut her pay because of it. Unless there were certain days where she knew she was finishing early and could even make other plans etc.

We have a FT nanny and pay hourly... We guarantee 45 hrs a week at a minimum in her contract, so we pay time & a half over 40 hours.... Not that that applies to you, but it seemed most fair because sometimes we go way over, and sometimes under, so hourly works for us as well as her. We have a "timesheet" book that she fills out daily with notes from their day, and we use that to track expenses as well.

how did you find a PM only nanny! We're trying to find someone new since ours is moving and we're having a tough time finding someone just for the afternoons. :(

eta: I actually pay her 2pm-5 on Mondays, and 2pm-4:30 the other days, because on Mondays I usually get home around 4:45 and the rest of the week anywhere from 4-4:30 depending on traffic. If I get home at 4, we just pay the set rate of stopping at 4:30. Or if my husband works from home and lets her go early, we still pay the base rate of 13 hours/wk. If she works late because of a rare nighttime school event for me, we pay her hourly rate additional.

When we had a full time nanny, we paid a flat rate, but then also paid overtime if we went over our agreed upon hours. So she was guaranteed a certain amount of money each week, whether we had a snow day, or one of us stayed home with a sick kid or whatever. BUT if I had a rare late night (Like Meet the Teacher night at my school), then I paid her the hourly rate for those additional hours. So there was no benefit to me to come home early or whatever--I got in the habit of just using that time to run errands by myself, since I knew I'd be paying her anyway.

HOWEVER, now we have a part time PM sitter--similar to your situation. She just keeps my oldest from 2:30-4:30 each day, so it's really part time. She is much younger, a full time college student (or was, now she's transitioning into being a police officer) and I asked her in the interview what she expected, and she kind of lowballed herself (her only previous experience was a part time job at Old Navy) in terms of pay and benefits. So she asked for only $13/hr (that's extremely low for our area) and didn't expect to be paid for days she didn't work. We offered her $15/hour for 1 kid and $18 for the times she has both kids (other kid is in daycare), and we pay her if we don't need her on a day, but we *don't* pay her if she asks to take a day off. She was thrilled, and we got a good deal for our area, so it was a win win. Because of police academy, she's had a fair amount of days she couldn't work and my husband had to rearrange his schedule and work from home, and she didn't get paid for those days. Also, with our part time sitter, we sometimes do an "hours switch", where if she takes off one day, then we ask her to do a date night that weekend to make up the hours. When we had a full time nanny, that was explicitly stated in the contract that it's NOT done, and date nights were paid at the regular hourly rate.

So long story short, each nanny/sitter we've had negotiated different things. But it's also based on precious nanny experience.

Flat rate. You want stable care, so offer the sitter stability in return.

My MIL is our nanny, essentially. We pay her a flat rate and have set hours / days. About once a month we need more hours, and once a month we have less, and it all evens out. This is mainly through Saturday babysitting, 3 day weekends, or coming home from work early on an early release (we are teachers and sometimes take 1/2 personal days.)

We have a full-time nanny and she’s salaried. We were previously in a nanny share (same nanny) and also did a salary vs. hours. My sisters have both done PT nanny gigs in the past and vastly prefer guaranteed hours/a set salary. I think it takes the guesswork out of it for the nanny and reduces the management load for the employer.

When I had a PT nanny i felt better giving her reliable hours, and I sometimes sent her home early. It also gives the option to use that time for little errands and things. I guess it depends how often that would happen though.

Our son is full time with his nanny, but I pay a flat rate to her. So if I have a 4 day work week she gets the same as if I am 15 minutes late coming home one day a week. It takes out any questions of how much she makes a week. When we have a second, I have already spoke to her about her expectations for having our older son before and after school along with the second child and she also prefers a flat rate on that too because she knows what she's getting in advance for the sake of budgeting.

So - short background. Both DDs (4.5 & 2) are in FT daycare right now. In September, DD1 will start Kindy (8:30am - 3:55pm) and DD2 will go to "public" pre-school (9am - 3pm).

DH and I need to have aftercare so we are going to PM Nanny route. She will pick up DD2 from pre-school at 3pm and be home to meet DD1 from the bus around 4:15pm. All of this (both schools) are within 2 miles of our home, 5 miles of our Nannies work and home.

We officially have said 3pm-5:30pm, but in reality DH will probably get home some days between 4:30/5pm.

$10-$15/hour seems to be the going rate. Would you rather pay a Nanny higher per hour, and only pay the hours she works? Or a flat rate for the hours of 3pm-5:30pm each day?

Wondering how others do it?
