@Honeybee: yeah that is just more work for each of us but i'm sure that's what we'll end up doing.

@Mrs. Pen: When we had a nanny, she was salaried, so we just input the same number of hours regardless of how much she actually worked. Maybe have your brother fill out a paper timecard? Then you'll have a physical record of how many hours he worked every day/week in addition to the online record.

@red_seattle: haha! I didn't realize there was so much involved. I was a nanny (who did it legally with the family) and just assumed that doing the payroll system would simply deduct his taxes... But as an "employer" i'm responsible for taxes too! Now we have to pay unemployment tax and two others I think?? I had to apply for a FEIN through the IRS, then through the state, and then report my new hire to the state. Ugh this is so much work!

And I'm only working 20 hours a week!

So there are repercussions on both sides for not paying taxes.

Ugh. We're in the horrible position of having not paid taxes on our nanny for the 4 months we had her. We figured she had it covered, and we weren't sure if we would need her often enough to put us into the having-to-pay-taxes-on-your-nanny bracket anyway. We found out recently that yes, she worked for us enough that we do need to go back and figure out taxes on this. So-- you know, kudos to you guys for not doing what we did. D'oh!

@Honeybee: ok so I'm doing the month free trial if intuit and I think I have most of it set up and ready to roll. The one thing I hate is that I wish I could log in each day and input daily hours. It's really inconvenient to have to remember the hours he worked each day for 15 days before I can submit them. How do you do this? Does your nanny work set hours? Ours doesn't for now, though he will eventually.

We used Intuit's online employment software. It's very user-friendly and I think we only paid $25/month.

Congrats on the job, btw!

My little brother will be my nanny, he is a minor and since he's only part time the tax service I know of (Breed Love) wouldn't be cost-effective (I think it's $300/quarter).

Does anyone know where to find info on how to do this legally without paying a fortune for a service?

How did you do it with your nanny (esp if you have a PT nanny)? Thanks!
