@bushelandapeck: good luck! Hope you get it all figured out. It always astounds me how childcare givers think they know more than than the parents and do things without clearance first.

@regberadaisy: I think we could go back to a level 1 or 2 also but I'll start with the 3 and see how it goes!! She did end up going her 17oz (4-5 more than usual) yesterday and she was spitting up a lot. She also still woke up just as much so I'm not convinced it helped at all. Thanks everyone for your input!!

DD1's bottle never increased or decreased despite starting solids or physical milestones. Sure there might've been more wkaeups etc.

DD2 just started crawling and it didn't affect her bottle intake. We just started sending solids to daycare 1x a day and some days she doesn't take all of her last bottle. We send (4) bottles at 3.5oz. So 14 ounces total which is about the same as you. Both girls have always stayed at level 1 nipples. I didn't think with BF babies there was a need to go above level 1s because it's like the breast? I would definitely switch back to a 3 and ask her to give at least another solid meal. Especially if you're regularly giving 3 and she's only giving 1!

@catomd00: I second everything you said. Look for you tube videos on paced bottle feeding. Breast nipples never change size so you don't need to increase bottle nipple size. My lo is 7 months and takes 3x 4oz a day with premie nipples.

@catlady: Thank you for weighing in! I'm certainly willing to do whatever I need to so that she gets what she needs, even if that mean an extra pumping session or two.

@avivoca: This is our second go-around with it as well....ugh. I hope this is the last time!

@babynumber1: I agree. We will give it a shot for today and possibly next week and see if it helps with the sleeping. I stayed home with DS until he was 9 mos and he started STTN right at 9 mos on his own. I can't, for the life of me, remember how much he was eating then though.

@catomd00: I agree with the paced bottled feeding. I'm going to talk to her about it tonight and switch back the slower nipples.

She needs to be practicing paced bottle feeding. At that age my daughter ate a ton of solids (we did blw) and remained at 3 4 oz bottles a day, sometimes only taking 3 oz. we never went above the slowest flow nipples. My daughter was waking 1 maybe 2 times a night to nurse at that point. I always just gave what I pumped and figured my body knew what it was doing.

@bushelandapeck: When LO started crawling we upped her bottles during the day and she started sleeping through the night. She was getting solids twice a day, morning and dinner. Its worth a try if they start sleeping through the night.

A similar thing happened with my LO at that age (she started crawling at 7.5 months so I think it was due to that) and she legitimately did need more milk. In our case, my LO was in daycare starting at 3 months and I always sent in 3x4oz bottles plus an extra 2oz bottle just in case (14 oz total). Every day, I would take home the extra bottle but at around 7 or 8 months, she started drinking it consistently. At a certain point, the teachers requested I send in even more (3x6oz bottles, which was impossible for me). I pushed back a bit but ultimately I did have to go into my freezer stash a bit, add an extra pump session at night every so often, and I also ended up renting a hospital grade pump to keep up. At a certain point, my LO's food intake increased enough to get her back to 3x4oz bottles but it took awhile. Hope this doesn't scare you, in our case we did make it to 12 months (just barely!).

@Anagram: It was for us too, and DS took one bottle until he was 18 months!

@avivoca: I know....she did it in part because DD has thrush and I told her we needed to sanitize all the nipples, pacifiers, etc after each use. So, instead of doing that, she just put the new nipples on the bottles...believe me, it was an issue for me, but we've had SO many issues lately that I just didn't have it in me to argue with her.

H was eating three 4-5 oz bottles a day and 1-2 meals of solids at that age. She also ate overnight, anywhere from 2-4 times. Our ped wasn't concerned (she is smaller as well), so I wasn't concerned. I don't think the nanny should have switched the bottle nipples without your permission though.

@bushelandapeck: I've noticed that people want to be proactive when it comes to kids. Especially if it isn't THEIR kid  - maybe leave something that she can give your daughter to eat that is non puree, assuming you are comfortable with it. I'm always of the mindset that milk during the day has metabolized already so it's not like it helps him sleep. I'm a load him up at night kind of girl. So, if I was going to up his milk it would be right before bed, not during the day. Again, this is probably incorrect logic, but it has worked for us.

At 10 months he's still on Level 1 flow nipples! He doesn't seem to care (plus it's cheaper for us).

@bushelandapeck: He dropped all night time feeds at 10 weeks (knock on wood), but was off and on STTN. He would still sometimes wake-up for his paci. BUT, randomly at 8 months he woke-up for 2 weeks and the only thing that would calm him would be like 2 ozs of milk. It was very strange.

@LBee: It's so hard to know how much she takes throughout the day because she is still waking so much at night...which is probably because she isn't eating enough during the day. And she LOVES non pureed foods....will really not even eat purees unless we really push them on her. We've been doing a lot of BTW and giving her pieces of whatever we are eating since she turned 8 mos. She seems to eat a ton at dinner time, and just picks a bit at breakfast and lunch, which is fine with me.

@Adira: I think we should switch back to the level 3's as well. I may do that and just not tell her ;)

@bushelandapeck: nope! But I had cut down to one overnight feeding at that point---and we would only give 3-4 oz, trying to stop that feeding too. Usually whatever we gave overnight was kind of "deducted" from her morning bottle since I felt like we didn't need to go over 30 oz a day.

Our LO was 80% for height and 30% for weight at that point, so definitely not in danger of eating too much either.

@LBee: @Anagram: Were your babies STTN at this point?

@Mamaof2: I don't think I can pump more, unless he stops eating so much overnight...I've been pumping 14-16oz pretty much the whole time I've been back to work. I was making more than she needed for a while, which is why is have a freezer stash. I *think* I have enough to get us to 12 months, but I really don't want to risk it and have to supplement if there is another option. I like your idea of giving her a set menu...unfortunately our nanny likes to do things her way most of the time, so I'm not sure if she would actually follow it, or just tell me she did. We are in the process of finding a new nanny however, and I will definitely use this idea with whomever we choose.

At 8 months, Xander was probably only eating 1-2 meals of solids a day and had 5 oz bottles. By 9 months, we upped his bottles to 6 oz, but only because I cut out a MOTN feed and wanted to make up the difference, but I really don't think it would have mattered.

I'd tell your nanny to stick with the 5 oz bottles, but to add a solid meal during the day instead. And also switch back to slow flow nipples!

@bushelandapeck: Another idea is to find a non-pureed food that she really loves. Our childcare (a mix between my mom, a nanny, and MDO) isn't always great about getting purees into him, but we KNOW that he will feed himself certain food. We would leave them the things that he could easily self feed that were always a hit - some examples: torn up meat, banana pancakes, eggs, certain fruits. We did sort of BLW (I guess?) and felt comfortable with his ability to eat those foods.

What about giving one 6 oz bottle and the rest 4 oz? I know that LO was always a little more hungry at one feed. I tend to feel that with milk intake it's usually pretty obvious how much they truly need after a week.

What is her total milk intake a day? (estimated)
At that age, LO ate 18 ozs pumped milk + nursed once in the morning (estimate 6 ozs) for a total of 24 ozs.

My kids only ever took 4oz bottles 3 times a day while I worked -

Are you able to pump more? If so then you could try it. I barely got the 12 oz I needed for the day so I would probably suggest adding solids.

As for the nanny I would leave her a daily menu of sorts

Breakfast : bottle and 2oz fruit
Lunch: bottle and 2oz veggies
etc

@LBee: I have enough frozen milk to cover the difference for a while at least. I normally pump 14-15oz per day when I'm at work, but I only work 2 days/week, so it shouldn't be a huge issue, I think. DD isn't consuming a large amount of solids (though she loves eating non-pureed foods), so maybe she does need more ounces.

My situation was a bit different because I EPd, and my LO had some feeding issues and wasn't really eating much (if at all) in the way of solids at 8 months.

But she was drinking 3 6 oz bottles at daycare at 8 months. We dropped her at 8 and I picked up at 4ish. I think they usually fed her at 9, 12, and 3. (we fed her 6 oz at 6 am when she woke). Sometimes she wouldn't have finished her last bottle and I would give her the rest right when we got home around 4:15. And then I'd give her another 6 oz before bed.

So she was at 30 oz total for the day of bm at that point, but pretty much no solids. She continued at 30 oz a day until she finally started eating right after she turned 1 year, and then we quickly started dropping milk feeds.

At 8 months he had just cut back from 8 ozs to 6 ozs because we had started a 3rd meal of solids. I also remember, though, that he randomly picked up a 4 AM feed after not feeding through the night since 10 weeks. He dropped it 2 weeks later.

Do you have enough milk to cover increasing the bottles? I think it probably wouldn't hurt. If it were me, I'd say that I'm more than willing to increase the bottles, but that we need to keep the "eye on the prize," so to speak and that she is moving towards a life of solids anyways so why not focus on that if she still seems hungry.

So, we've been having some communication issues with our nanny that may be contributing to my frustration. Please bear with me :)

DD is 8 months old and I've been back to work and pumping 3x/day since she was 4 months. She has been taking 4-5oz bottles 3x/day while I'm at work and this seems to be working out fine. This morning, our nanny asked if she could start giving her 6oz bottles 3x/day because DD is drinking the bottles quickly and seems like she could eat more. I explained that it's probably due to the fast flow of the nipples (she switched her to level 4 last week without asking me) and not so much to her need to eat more. DD is also taking some solids 3 meals a day with us, but our nanny is only writing down that she's giving her solids 1x/day. Gah. The other issue is that DD is still waking at least twice a night, sometimes three or four times. I know some of that is habit, but I'm so worried about her not getting enough during the day that I usually let her nurse if she wants to. She just started crawling, so I know she's probably hungrier than usual.

So....How many ounces were your BF babies consuming at 8-9 months? Were they eating solids? Were they still frequently night waking? Any advice as to how to better explain things to our nanny? Thanks!
