@Skadi: It's ok, I wasn't sure I'd do it this year anyway. Summer would be a better time for NaNoWriMo, lol. But then it would have to be NaJuWriMo or NaAuWriMo.

@mrsjazz: Great point! I think one reason I struggle with that is because everyone emphasizes how you need to grab the reader right away. They say that the first 5,000 words are the most important, and you want to prevent readers from saying, "It started out slow and I just couldn't get into it." The pressure to perform right away is so intense that it's easy to put too much up front.

@Warbler  That is bizarre! Maybe they were high or drunk? I'm glad nothing valuable was stolen.

Our next question (feel free to post your own questions, btw):

What's your favorite passage you've written today?

I was lucky enough to write this one, which might really shine after I edit it later.

"Thorgeir was one of those indomitable old men whose bones had become thin and hard as iron. Time may have sapped the muscles of his youth, but years of self-discipline and generally getting his own way had molded his will into a force to be reckoned with. He hobbled down the path, leaning against his ceremonial staff like a crutch, but it did not fool Kara even for a moment. She knew he donned the heavy cloak of infirmity only to conceal the sharpness of his wits."

I didn't write much on Wednesday or Thursday either. Someone broke into our house Wednesday around lunch time. Thankfully, no one was home and it doesn't look like they took anything valuable. The weird thing is that even though our alarm went off, the burglars still opened up a couple of our dresser drawers before they left. Totally ignored my laptop and some money I had on top of the dresser though. Bizarre right? Anyway, I haven't been feeling motivated to write these last couple of days. Meh.

I'm also guilty of trying to cram all of my "setup information" into the first couple of chapters. I just feel like if I don't the reader might be lost. Like in my novel, it's split up into two parts. The first part details the narrator's childhood and the second part details the narrator entering into adulthood. So far, I have labored over getting everything into the first two chapters (relationship dynamics, character descriptions, even jobs). Logically, I know there's just too much there that can be spread out. Eh, that's what second drafts are for, right?

How's everyone's writing going?

Because of major work deadlines I didn't write Wednesday or Thursday. I have 2 hours to kill before a dinner date tonight so I'm going to stay at work and write and then I plan on doing a sprint after LO goes to bed Saturday night to catch up.

In other news my second chapter was workshopped in my fiction class after a major re-write (everyone thought I should write in present tense and wanted me to slow down the sequence of events) and everyone loved it. So I'm pushing on with the idea of slowing down.

My teacher mentioned that one of the biggest mistakes most of her writing students who are working on novels do is to put everything in the first few chapters because they think they have to make sure that people know everything about the characters. She said we need to remember to slow down, we have an entire novel and readers don't need 100% of the details in the first 3 chapters.

I have a loose outline to a point and from there it gets a bit sketchy and needs more work but I didnt want to not start Nano so I just went with it I still have a lot of ground to cover before I get to the hole which is good but I like to have a plan and I wish I had a better one right now

@Mrs. Chocolate: What about leaving yourself a placeholder? So, just write a couple of sentences or paragraphs about what you think is supposed to happen next. You don't have to write the full-on scenario.

I write linearly, too, but sometimes it stops me from getting the story out. Are you totally winging this or do you have an outline?

@mrsjazz: I can potentially write around it since it wont play much of a factor til later but its hard for me. I am a basher as said before and I feel like leaving something critical out might hurt my writing process. Also I tend to write linearly so now I dont know where to pick up. I need to take a day or so I think to get some feel for this and then try to pick it up again.

@Skadi: I need you! I am the worst proofreader, editor, user of grammar etc. When I was in high school I had a friend who loved doing stuff like that so she proofed all my papers, funny how now she is an editor for a publishing company! Worked out well. I need someone like you to comb through my work because I can write a story (albeit slowly) but I cant correct one wit of it.

In normal everyday life I'm a swooper, which is why the first three chapters of my novel took months. I am learning to be a basher, though! I think being a basher works better for me in theory, so I'm trying to put it into practice. I feel like revision is much more important than getting it right the first time.

I'm at 5058 words! Woo hoo! If the NaNoWriMo site was working I would've earned by 5k badge last night. Wrote 1332 words, less than I wanted to but it has to be enough for now.

@Skadi: Im a basher as well. It takes me so long to formulate a sentence sometimes because I want every word to be perfect. I accept it and like it this way honestly even if I know it will take me eons to finish my story this way. I want my words to literally sing to my heart as I write and Im willing to wait for the right notes.

I'm a basher, unfortunately. I wish I was a swooper. I think swoopers have a higher chance of finishing projects.

I'm also more of an editor than a writer. In another life, I could have been a publishing agent. I love marketing, proofreading, and pretty much anything on the technical side of becoming an author that does not directly involve the act of actually sitting in a chair and writing the book itself.

@Skadi: We have such a complicated relationship, sometimes we're on speaking terms and sometimes we're not (we're on at the moment). I do worry that she will read my novel and have a very bad reaction, but I also think that it could help our relationship at times. I agree with @ILoveLettie, writing is therapy for me!

I think I write better with music in the background, it helps me focus. When I don't listen to music I tend to procrastinate more, which probably sounds weird! The quiet just makes it easy for my mind to wander. Yesterday I was listening to the Spotify playlist created for writing inspiration.

@Skadi: I have a pandora station that plays classical soundtracks and sometimes I'll listen to that, but mostly I need silence. I find I end up talking to myself a lot while I write - not just to reread what I wrote, but to work through plot points, hash out dialog. Does anyone else do this (or am I crazy?) :silly:

I'm not keeping track of word count as my goal is just to get some work accomplished every day, and so far I've been working on my story every day. It feel so good to get back to it, although finding a block of time isn't easy.

I did a loose outline of my next chapter on my commute into work this morning and hope to write some of it on my lunch break. My boss would probably prefer that I didn't take a lunch break because it's busy (I rarely take a lunch break, just eat my desk) but I promised myself that during NaNo I'd take some time for me.
