My LO doesn't like to be held to sleep, but if he's sick or teething and wakes from a nap early / has trouble going down I will go in and rub his back til he drops off. He's generally a really good napper and I ALWAYS worry about creating bad habits by helping him go to sleep, but so far he always goes completely back to normal once he's over whatever is bothering him. Hope your LO feels better soon!

@Mrs. Sunshine: I did Motrin last night and it did seem to help, but it still took 30 minutes for him to fall asleep, with me going back in and rocking him. His gums are so swollen that I wince looking at them.

@Pirouette: My MIL suggested car naps, so the stroller nap is a good idea too rather just driving around for an hour!

i'm sorry, teething sucks :( and being sick on top of it is just evil! I may be too much of a softy about this type of thing, but i never let her cry when she's sick/teething...she just sounds so uncomfortable, I can't listen to it. She's also a great napper, so we've never nap trained, but when she's sick we usually do stroller naps - she finds it easier to settle than when she can move so much in the crib. Don't know if that would create a bad habit for you?

We did CIO and though she's been putting herself to sleep for months if she's really sick I usually only wait about 10 minutes and then I'll rock her. I also try to give her Motrin at bed (sometimes nap) times just so I know I've done all I can to try and help her rest on her own. I held her for an entire nap today because she has a stuffy nose and a cough. I basically covered her in Vicks, gave her Motrin and put her mattress on an incline before bed so that I could help her sleep hee best but she still needed me to rock her for about 5 minutes first.

@Mae: I tried it today and no dice. The past week I've tried at least one of his naps laying down with him, and it's worked once or twice.

@Tanjowen: it is so sad :( Are you able to rock him? When my LO was having a lot of nap trouble (before we trained) I ended up just holing her for every nap and she would take 1.5-2 hr naps that way. I read like 14 books in november... lol

@Mae: Thank you for the advice! I like the 15 minute idea. It just sucks because he's exhausted and I feel he needs the sleep to get better :bummed: Hopefully he goes back to being a good napper after this is over, but might be posting about sleep training in the future...

No real experience but I'd say ride it out. We did night and nap train but when LO got a cold during night training we agreed we'd never make her CIO more than 15 min while sick (5 and 10 min check). Those were early days of night training so that wasn't that long and we really just wanted to give her a chance to fall asleep on her own. At this point now that she almost always goes down without crying, if she was sick or teething and crying I think I'd just do what she needed for comfort. Down side is that might mean training again after sickness... but when she is in actual pain/discomfort I don't know that I could do CIO

My LO is getting over an ear infection and teething like a mad man. His naps have gone to hell, like maybe 20 minute naps here and there. He was up from noon until 7 p.m. today, which made for a really, really long day.

I am not a huge fan of crying it out, but up until this point we have had an excellent nap taker that went down quite easily. Should I let him cry it out, or just ride out the sickness? I feel like I'm creating some really bad habits this past week that are going to ruin naptime. Any advice or experience appreciated!
