@caffeinated: I just went by her sleepy cues and slowly just extended her wake time to 2.5 hours. I just went back into my notes and when LO turned 6 months old I had written: "She's taking 2-3 naps a day some as long as 3 hours but a minimum of 1hour. I never know if it's going to be a long nap or short nap kind of day." And this carried on until 8.5 months where it was for sure 2 naps/day...And sometimes a third if needed. However, her last nap (be it her second or third) NEVER went past 3:30pm and if she did take a third nap, it was always very very short (30 minutes).

@Rubies: Was there a transition period you had to suffer through to figure out her awake time was 2.5 hours?

When LO was 6 months old, she was just starting to transition from 3 naps to 2. This could possibly be a solution? Her awake time was about 2.5 hours.

@caffeinated: oh you poor thing! My LO went through something similar around that time and it was a mix of things that caused it. If she woke up after we put her down for a nap, we had to let her cry for a few min. Then we would go in with a bottle and she would take it and pass out. If we just let her cry, she would make herself sick, but at the same time, she had to cry a little before she would take a bottle.

Hope things get better quickly!

@caffeinated: Now: awake times are 2 hours, then 3, then almost 4 before bed. Before, it was more like 2, 2.5, 2.5, 2. Then one day those last two awake periods just melded into one, as he didn't have a third nap, so I just put him to bed a little earlier than 'normal bedtime' when that happened. It happened quite naturally.

But if I try to put him down early now he definitely won't fall for it. He's got this new routine and he's sticking to it!

(Not going to lie: I already miss the 3rd nap. Imagine if you were at work and your boss said, hey everyone, we're going to cut out one of your breaks? That's a bit how I feel. But that's what I signed up for. I know as soon as baby gets crawling I'll also have to up my game big-time.)

@Honeybee: It's really hard to tell whether she's eating a lot more. Sometimes she'll get distracted so i'll try to offer her the boob more often to compensate for a short nursing session. When she cries at night, i am sure she's not hungry because she will pass out after a few minutes of nursing.

@bree72: A part of me worries that it's separation anxiety! Right when she hit 6 months, she would let out a bit of a cry when i left the room but she quickly went to sleep so i never thought it was a problem. Until now.

@Rubies: I never had to nap train by crying-it-out, but tried it today. Omg, i started crying after 30 minutes (and i've never cried while having to do cio with her) because she just would not stop crying. I am really opposed to having her nap in the ergo (i only use it if going out for more than a few hours) because i'm afraid her sleep will regress, but at the same time I know she's super tired!

@cvbee: before switching to 2 naps a day, what were his awake times like?

OH noooo!!! It could be so many things (teething, growth spurt, curious, separation anxiety, etc.) and it's so tough! You need a break! Along with sleep-training, are you also nap training? Is it something you might consider?

From what I've read, 6 months is when most babies begin to remember you when you leave. This is why separation anxiety can start hitting around then. Maybe she's begun to miss you when you leave the room?

Growth spurt? Have you noticed an increase in her eating? 6 months is also a really big age for all sorts of developments, physical and mental, so that may be playing a part. She'll likely go back to normal on her own within a few days to a week if it's a growth spurt or developmental stage. I know it can be really hard, though. :( Hang in there! It'll get better soon!

For the last three months, LO has been a great napper. Even during sleep regressions at night, she was a dream to put down for naps and would sleep quite a bit. (Please note that she was not a good sleeper naturally, but we really had to work on teaching her how to sleep and reading her sleepy cues.) In the past month, we've even been able to put her down completely awake and she'll go to sleep.

Until this past week.

She'd been having major problems sleeping at night, but she was still okay for her naps until recently. I can no longer put her in her crib awake. If i rock her to sleep and put her in her crib, she wakes up and screams. The other day she was awake for 3.5 hours before she passed out in the ergo. Today i couldn't put her down for her morning nap, and ended up having her sleep in my arms for an hour.

Is this a 6 month sleep regression? What's going on? I really don't think it is teething. I can barely get anything done, let alone eat.
