Thanks all... We are back to 3 naps for now I think, the last one being a cat nap, because she has been waking up earlier & earlier & her wake time is just not long enough to be able to only do 2 naps from 6am to 7pm. I feel a little weird about going backward but she is still taking at least one if not two 2-hr naps so I feel like it's working fine. I figure her wake time will increase in the near future & then it will be easier to stretch between naps & between the last nap & bed.

This has happened to us a few times lately, but it's LO not getting a third nap around 4:30. Usually she will sleep 20-30 minutes on the way home and that helps immensely. If she doesn't, we cr through everything and then I try to put her in bed by 6:30 or so.

An earlier bedtime (within a 1h span) never worked for us so I just dealt with the fussiness or let him cat nap in the stroller where his sleep was never as deep and thus the nap being closer to his bedtime wasn't a problem.

I had a few months where this would happen a few times a week. I never really figured it out until she finally got on a solid 2 nap schedule. Every day was an experiment to see what would work best.

But now at 8.5 months, she takes nice regular naps and has a regular bedtime, yet is flexible on the timing if we are busy. So, there is a light at the end of the (fussy) tunnel. :)

That happened all the time when LO dropped the third nap. What I did was work hard to get her to take the last nap late enough so that she would wake at 4 or later. Otherwise it was a disaster. She's like your LO. Will not go to bed super early. Maybe will only do 30 min early.

I'm in the keep-them-up crowd, but it definitely is trial and error to see what works for your little one. My little lad didn't get a proper nap until late this morning so I'll let him sleep for as long as he needs and try for a shorter nap later this afternoon. If he does one massive as opposed to two shorter naps, so be it. I try and operate on him getting 15 hours total sleep each 24 hour period but I'm not too fussed how he divides it up. I might be more laissez-faire than most...

When I need to keep LO awake like that, two things that really help are (a) going outside in the stroller and getting fresh air, and/or (b) bathtime.

Sometimes (like tonight) LO comes home totally exhausted from daycare and we just follow his cues. Sometimes we wind up up in the middle of the night, other times, he sleeps through. If we go against his cues, he is pretty miserable.

I meant to add that the bath and bedtime process helped keep him distracted and I think soothed him :)

My son just started the same schedule! It has been an interesting time period (read: fuss city), and we noticed he was starting to need to go to bed earlier and earlier. We have a bedtime process for him that takes roughly an hour - bath, lotion him up while singing/diapering, eat, read book and rock, then in crib - so we just started the process at 6 p.m. rather than at 7, and he is out like a light at 7 p.m. now after two nights of adjusting his schedule that way. Hope your little one sorts it out soon!

My LO is on a 2 nap schedule. His first nap is the longest (ranges from 1.5 - 3 hours), and he usually goes down around 10. His second nap is usually 1 - 1.5 hours long, and he goes down around 2.

Today, he didn't get a second nap, because his first one was late (went down at 12) and he didn't wake up til 3. Instead of putting him to bed early, which is always a disaster for us, I just amused him until his regular bedtime. He was fussy, but we made it, and now he's sound asleep *knock on wood*

Hope LO gets back on track for you tomorrow!

Ugh - we have had that happen a few times recently and I tried it both ways. For my LO, a late 3rd nap has resulted in a MUCH later bedtime, so I just do my best to keep her entertained and happy for as long as possible and then do any early bedtime.

LO took 2 naps today - 9-9:40am & 12-3pm. She has usually been taking two 2-hr naps with about 2.5 hrs between so her last nap is usually over at 4:30-5 & bedtime is at 7-7:30. This weird nap today meant if she had a 3rd nap it would be way too late so I elected for early bedtime at 6pm.

Well, it's not working out so hot. Girlfriend is exhausted but fighting it tooth & nail. I wish I had woken her up from that monster nap so she could have had a third nap at a decent time. :(

What do you do when a nap is too early to make it to bedtime but not early enough for another nap? I am rocking her right now which kind of sucks because without fail she has a bad night if she doesn't fall asleep on her own in the crib.
