Before you drop the nap, I would let it ride out a week or so to see if the novelty wears off. My LO2 did this but got bored and went back to his naps. Praise hands bc he would get cranky with just one nap

Somekne mentioned a sleep sack which is great to help them stay down, and prevent climbing which will come next.

Both of my boys went to one long nap around age 12/13 months. They would usually nap right after lunch for about 2+ hours.

My 2.9 year old still naps for 2-3 hours once a day.

I personally love having my kids on only one nap. Both of mine dropped down to one nap around 5 months old. (Yes seriously...my pediatrician didn’t believe me at first either!) My older child did this all on her own. My younger child did this because we were always off to one of my daughter’s activities in the mornings.

This might be a great time to transition to one longer nap in the afternoons. If he is more tired by the afternoon, he’s less likely to play around in his crib instead of sleeping. And you will had much more freedom in the mornings :)

Both of my girls did this around 1 year. My older one was just excited to practice moving and the novelty wore off after a week or so. My younger one took the opportunity to drop down to one nap...I kept putting her in the crib for two naps, and she consistently didn't sleep for one of the times, so we dropped it and adjusted the timing a bit. I sure wasn't ready for her to give up two naps, but she was!

DD did this when she first started cruising. It lasted a week or so. Then it was old news and she went back to sleeping just fine. In my opinion it is early to drop to one nap but I know some kids do.

My LO can't do this yet, but whenever he gets a new skill he delights in practicing it when he's supposed to be sleeping (especially if it's 4 am in the morning) and sleep is inevitably lousy for at least a few days. So I'd say give it awhile for the novelty to wear off (if you haven't already) before doing something more drastic like dropping a nap.

DS went down to one nap at 12 months. It was basically forced on him, as he moved rooms at daycare and the one-year-old room only did one nap. But he got used to it quickly. Maybe try one day with only one nap and see how he responds?

does he wear a sleep sack? that helped keep my DS from walking around the crib.

@annem1990: those aren’t very good options then :bummed: I would probably just leave him in there until it’s an acceptable nap length (an hour, 1.5) or he started crying. And plan on an early bed time tonight. Good luck.

@Foodnerd81: Glad this is a normal development leap! If I go in and lay him down, it's 50/50 whether it will make him more upset or if he will just lay there for a minute and then stand back up.

My younger daughter did actually drop her second nap just before 1 year, but that’s quite young to drop it. I think he’s just too excited that he can do this and you’ll just have to ride it out. What happens if you go in and lay him down and tell him to sleep? I know between my two kids, if I tried that with my older, she would have gotten way more excited and never gone to sleep and started crying. With my younger there’s a 50/50 chance she would have actually gone to sleep after I laid her down.

Hopefully he will get over the excitement and go back to napping for you soon!

DS is 11 months. He's been walking on furniture for a while, but just figured out he could do it in his own crib. He will not take his afternoon nap. He just spends the whole time walking around the crib. He's not really crying, just sort of whining. He doesn't have any toys (besides his pacifier) in bed.
His morning nap is usually around 1-1.5 hours and he goes down immediately.

It seems to early to go to one nap. Is this true? My 20 month-old nephew is still on 2 naps. It's driving me crazy listening to him talk in bed and knowing our evening will be really tough because he's been awake since 10:30am. Any advice?
