My daughter is twelve weeks and only tolerates a transfer about 50% of the time. I don't mind letting her nap on my chest for her afternoon nap - she takes her morning nap in our bed, and I usually answer emails or read while she snoozes. She's cool playing on her activity mat while I tidy up the house, or pop a load of laundry in, so the current napping situation works for us.

She's a great sleeper at night (we bed share), and doesn't require sleeping on us to sleep long and soundly. I think it's just something that takes some getting used to. We aren't doing any sleep training, but I imagine nap training could work later down the line, if that's your thing.

Sounds like what our daughter was like! Unfortunately she was never a good napper until close to age 1, but it certainly got easier. During the newborn days our most successful naps involved stroller walks, babywearing, the yoga ball, or going for a drive in the car. Nobody ever told me that getting a baby to nap would be such an active process. I felt like I never got any rest while my baby slept b/c I had to be physically moving for her to sleep. It sucked, but is apparently way more normal than I though it was. The good news was, our daughter fairly quickly grew into great nighttime sleep habits. It sounds like your baby might be similar...

@Ms.Badger: Yup, when he's in the mood, he likes the yoga ball, too. Just not always... little guy is keeping me on my toes!

It's not a perfect solution but have you tried bouncing him on a yoga ball? You still have to work for it but my LO fell asleep much faster with us bouncing on a ball than any other way

@Foodnerd81: I can't really either, but know lots of moms who can (I also haven't mastered doing everything with 1 hand. lol).

I actually napped with P the majority of the time until she was almost a year. Figure the majority of infants sleep such ways by design and there would come a time that she naturally wouldn't need so much work on my part to get to sleep whether day or night. She didn't nap on her own at all for the first 5 mths and then it took another 2.5 months before she'd sleep more than 20 minutes at a time. Now, at 18 mths she naps almost always on her own (unless I just feel like napping too) for 1-3 hours.

Hope you both find resolve soon!

Sounds like my Lo. She is ten weeks now and is unfortunately still the same way. I'm right there with you in that it's driving me absolutely insane. I feel like I've tried everything. She even wakes up within half an hour with me holding her and not moving.

I wish I had some advice. We are going to have todo some sleep training once she is three months because I can't take it much longer and she isn't getting the sleep she needs.

@runsyellowlites: I can't get stuff done while baby wearing. I can do brief shopping trips where I just but one or two things and don't really stop moving, but it's not like I can sit down and make myself lunch or take a nap. It's still better to walk outside with her in the carrier than bounce a crying baby but I'm still going nuts.

This was me too. I had to hold R for every single nap or she would wake up. It was a rough when she started day care, but has learned now to fall asleep on her own. Just give it some time.

My daughter was like this! To be honest I just waited it out with her. She got into a pretty consistent routine around 12 weeks.

I'm not going to lie though, I still either wear her or lay down with her for her naps now at 6 1/2 months.

My 12 week old is the same, minus the fussing. She just doesn't nap unless I hold her or unless she's in the stroller while I walk. She 'll fall asleep fine, but will wake up within minutes of me putting her down, even swaddled with white noise in a dark room. It's annoying but I've been trying since about 6 weeks to break her of only napping while being held but she just won't sleep, so she's winning this battle for now.

Soon advice here!! When she's officially 3 months I might consider some nap training.

Sounds pretty normal for 7 weeks old. I would try babywearing so you can get things done while he sleeps.

Hi all! Frequent reader, infrequent poster here desperate for some advice!

My 7 week old is a difficult napper. He has never fallen asleep on his own - he needs to be fairly vigorously bounced/rocked to sleep. Other than the first nap of the day, the rest are a constant struggle with alternating rocking/bouncing/paci, etc for 20-45 minutes until something finally knocks him out. I have him swaddled, in a dark room, with white noise. There is crying involved (always on his part, sometimes on mine).

To add to this problem of not being able to fall asleep without my extended help, he also frequently wakes up on the transfer to the crib/Rock N Play. I try to wait at least 20 minutes until he's in a deep sleep, but I can only successfully transfer him without him waking up maybe once a day, if I'm lucky. Even then, if I do transfer him, he'll wake after one sleep cycle guaranteed, if not sooner. Much of the time, I just hold him throughout his entire nap to ensure he gets his rest.

I'm losing my mind here as I feel like I spend my entire day getting him to sleep and holding him while he sleeps. Is there anything I can do to help my 7 week old??? Or am I just stuck until he gets older???

FWIW, nighttime sleep is better. He generally will fall right back asleep after nursing and I can transfer him to his Rock N Play.
