I definitely would go at least 2 hours with Baby Y at 6 mos, possibly a little longer. And then increase that period by 15 minutes or so as the day goes on, with the longest period before bed. He can go about 3 hours before bed before he starts getting OT, maybe even 3.5. Four hours ushers us into the disaster zone, though.

One thing we're struggling with is the 3-2 nap transition. If he takes two decently long naps, we're golden. But often one or two will be short, which leaves me scrambling to get him to take a late catnap, which he often doesn't want (but clearly needs).

@Andrea: That's really interesting...My LO's shortest wakeful period is between her last nap and bedtime. She's SO cranky from the second she wakes up from that nap until we start bedtime routine. Sometimes it's so bad that she goes down at 5pm!

Six months was when all hell broke loose for us. It was the end of the swaddle and the reliable sleeping that he would do.

IIRC, my son was doing 2 naps, but he's never been a champion sleeper. I don't have my notes any more, but I think he would be awake for about 1 hour 45 minutes max between naps.

It's so hard to remember back now! But I know that my LO could stay awake for 2 hours by 6 months with a slightly longer awake period between her last nap and bedtime.

At 6 months Charlie was awake for 1 hour and 45 min before his first nap, and then 2 hours before his 2nd, 3rd naps and bedtime.

You can see his nap schedules for his entire life here:

LO's wakeful period used to be 2 hours on the nose and then she'd go down for a nap. But for the last 1.5 weeks, it's been more like 90 minutes...Sometimes even less at 75 minutes. I think it's a phase, though. 6-month growth spurt? I don't know. Maybe you can try extending LO's wakeful period by 5-15 minutes to see? Or, maybe she just wants to play. I would stick to your guns, though. Sleep is important! And it creates Hellobee time for you! ;)

My LO used to take a nap after being awake for 90 minutes. She started to get fussy, I'd put her down for a nap, that was just how we did it. All of a sudden she turned 6 months and she doesn't want to nap as much. She'll still get a little fussy so I'll think it's nap time, but she refuses to go to sleep. I'll usually end up feeding her eventually and then she'll fall asleep in my arms. I know it's a no no, but I don't care as long as she sleeps!

Should I change the nap schedule to have her stay awake for 2 hours now that she's a little older? What was your LO's nap schedule at 6 months?
