DD is 19 months and has been fighting naps the past couple weeks. Normally she goes down around 12:30 for 1.5- 2 hours. But lately she's been fighting it till at least 2:00. She'll just sit in her crib and roll around, play, stand up, talk, and sometimes cry. I'm not sure if maybe it had something to do with DH having 2 weeks off over the holidays and being home with her, or if it's just a phase she's going through. It'll be interesting to see how she does at daycare this week, since they're on a nap schedule from 12:30-3:00.

J has never been a good sleeper, not fussy, just doesn't sleep nearly as long or as often as his peers.
He just turned 2 last month but has been fighting naps for months. On the days where he doesn't nap, I just let him lay in bed and talk/yell/play for about an hour before going to get him. If at the end of that hour he's starting to wind down, I let him stay in there for a few more minutes to see if he will finally rest.
Instead of telling him I want him to sleep, I tell him it's "quiet time" and whisper when he's in his crib.
It doesn't always work, but I always try.

ETA: his schedule is: wake 8am, nap 1pm, bed 8:30/9pm

We went through this around 20 months and it didn't get consistently better until 22 months...and my LO had always been a great sleeper. I think it's developmental for sure bc their brains are going through a ton of stuff. She would naps 3 days and not nap 2 etc... And sleep in. I would put her to bed an hour earlier on no nap days and that helped the sleeping in a little. Where we ultimately ended up was pushing her nap way later...like by an hour and that worked for a few months.

Her old schedule was awake at 7:00; nap at. 12:30; and bedtime at 7:00

We moved her nap to 1:30 and that worked for a few months.

We keep moving her nap later when we had problems for several weeks.

At 24 months her schedule is: 7:30/8:00 wake up; nap at 2:30; bedtime at 8:00. I have to wake her from her nap...and she still takes a while to fall asleep but she stays in her bed and just talks to herself for an hour or so. I usually wake her after a 2 hour nap

@loveisstrange: that's good!! Maybe the 1/130 nap time will be good!

T has been doing crappy 45-1 hour nap or crying a few times during nap. He had a cold and is getting canines so I was blaming that but I think it might be developmental since he is getting a handful of new words a day lately.

@loveisstrange: Yay! Okay, I'm not happy you are experiencing this but it's nice to know I'm not alone. She normally naps for 2-3 hours but has been sleeping maybe 45 mins. to an hour lately. But on the other hand her night time sleep is getting better, it's easier to put her down now.

@bpcmarj: @winniebee: This started when she started getting her 2 year molars. :/ I assumed it was some kind of developmental thing. We have been discussing moving her nap back an hour, so maybe we should try it.

She did end up napping for me today. She slept from 1:30 until 3:15 when I woke her up so she didn't mess up her bedtime.

Letting her sleep in so late in the morning is only going to make her even less tired to nap. I know you said you've tried waking her up in the morning, but I would try it consistently for a week to see if it helps. And I agree with @winniebee: to try napping her later (like, closer to 1).

Echoing what @winniebee: said. Us May 2012 have all been dealing with INSANE sleep the last few weeks. P has been refusing to nap unless held (which she hasn't done in ages), waking up in the middle of the night screaming when she once STTN no problem. It is exhausting and I am at my wits end. She will stand in her crib during nap time saying "Momma, aaarreee you?". UGH. Yesterday she grabbed my pants after I put her in the crib and said "come back!".

For P, she definitely had a growth spurt as I have put away nearly all of her 2T clothes and moved into 3T territory. She also has many more words and phrases in the last week so she is having some kind of developmental thing happening, and she has cut 4 teeth in the last month.

I have no advice but wanted to say I am so right there with you.

Maybe just push her nap back by like an hour? Maybe she's just not tired when you put her down?

My son has been a shirty napper since switching to one so I don't know.

Kids in the May 2012 group are having issues with sleep since the holidays though..

So C is 21 months old. She's never been a great napper, but once we got her nap trained she was okay. She fights like crazy but once she's asleep, she sleeps for a couple hours. We switched to 1 nap at a year because she started completely refusing her afternoon nap.

She did fairly well on one nap. She would go down at 12, sleep for 1.5-3 hours and all was well. For the past 3-3.5 weeks, she will. not. nap. Like, will stubbornly sit in her crib and yell (not cry, yell and shout and play) for an hour or more rather than sleep. Ive just been going with it and continuing to put her down at normal time to keep her routine. She has taken 2 naps in the past week, but only for her dad and not for me. In this time, she has also started sleeping in super late rather than nap. Her night sleep has gone from 7-8 to 7-9:30/10. Ive been waking her up early and she still wont nap.

I read that this age is common for a nap strike. Please tell me Im not the only one here.... Im losing it.
