@cake2017: That sounds pretty good. Last night DS woke at 10 and 2:30 then 4:30 just to cuddle. I could manage those two wake times if it was every night.

@ALV91711: He starting sleeping completely through at 12 months. So i didn’t have any night feeds. I decided based on my schedule, sleep etc. I work full time so 1am worked for me so I had enough time to go back to sleep...before 12 months he was sleeping but woke up for two feeds. I can’t remember the other time but one was definetly at 1am

@PurplePumps: Yes it’s very nice! Hard work paid off- Lol.

No, I would let him cry and he fell back to sleep- it varies- never more than 30 mins of crying! It decreases as days go by and you stay consistent.

@PurplePumps: It was hard at the time! I started with naps and when we moved i did night time. I let him cry and then did checks (Ferbishish?!) The first night was hard but it got better... he sttn now- 630pm- 630/7am... today he woke up at 545am crying but i just waited until 6am to go in since we had to be somewhere this morning anyway. Bedtime routine and nap routine were key for him. I would suggest an early bedtime and routine...oh and to add- the frequent night wake ups- i picked a time i would go in to nurse and only responded at that time. I would let him cry(wouldn’t be long) when he woke up at the wrong time- this taught him and helped him start to sleep longer stretches.

@cake2017: How did it go with the sleep training your son? We're in the exact same position - 4.5 months, naps are 30-45 minutes, wakes up every hour over night - and I'm at my wits end.

I'd wait until you move. He's still so young anyways right now. I can't remember if I did naps or nights first. But I do remember that getting the naps on a schedule during the day absolutely helped with the night sleep. ETA: Ditto on the importance of a rock solid routine.

DS2 slept in a pack n play with a Dream on Me mattress for almost a year (DS1 was still sleeping in his crib and I wasn't going to buy another one). The nice thing about it was that it was portable, so we could set it up anywhere we wanted. If you have a similar situation where you have a PNP, I would do it now. If not, and moving the crib is a pain, then I would wait until you move.

We did nights first, then naps with DS1 I believe - but nap training happened like a few days later, so it wasn't like a big break. It was pretty around the same time.

You don't have to have a monitor if you don't want to if you can hear them fine.

Both my kids dropped arm swaddles by 12 weeks. DS1 was just breaking out of them and DS2 wanted to suck his fingers. We used the Halo sleep sacks with the wings and essentially we let them break out of them or just swaddled one arm. It has a flared bottom so they can still move their legs around, but the wings help their middles to feel sorta held. Then we just wrapped the wings around their middles once arms are free. Then we moved to the Halo sacks that have no wings, just as like a wearable blanket.

I think expecting at least one 5-7 stretch is reasonable at this age. You can nurse him before going to sleep, but usually for us we then changed their diapers and swaddled them, which roused them just enough where they were put down drowsy but awake.

Can't stress the importance of a rock solid routine. After a few weeks, both my kids started rubbing their eyes and yawning once I started singing their bedtime songs because kept everything the same every night. Still do.

@cake2017: Have you read the Sleep Lady's book? https://www.amazon.com/Sleep-Ladys-Good-Night-Tight-ebook/dp/B003P8P8II/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1509999871&sr=8-1&keywords=sleep+lady+good+night+sleep+tight

I found her approach especially helpful. We sleep trained when LO was 4 months and realized that we weren't recognizing LO's sleep cues. Once we put her down as soon as she was sleepy (instead of when she was overtired), her naps went from maybe 30 minutes to 2+ hours.

@Mae: Thank you so much! Yes I am expecting him to wake up and eat. I am fine with that. He was sleeping 5-7 hours through the night but it all stopped.

Can a baby self soothe in a merlin suit? Move around? He sucks his hands but also jerks his legs still in his sleep. We have bought so many swaddle/bedtime stuff and nothing worked but the “pre made ” swaddle haha which he breaks through now!

We have a routine and we have pushed forward his bedtime. I think a lot will come together once we move and he’s in his own room. We are going to wait to sleep teach once we move cause his crib is in here with us. He sees me and hears us too. I think it will be best to wait.

Thanks for the feedback! It helped!

I agree with Mae about working on wardrobe and consistent routine first then you can sleep train when you move.

I did exact routine with dd: bath on bath nights, pjs, boob, two books (it's always the exact same two books before bedtime, I switch up different books for naps but for night time it's always the same ones. I read it's supposed to help little ones feel more secure knowing what to expect. She always starts yawning as soon as I pull out the books from her bookshelf and rubs her lovey on her face.) Lullaby (always the same one), and then I would rock her to sleep. When she started resisting rocking to sleep, we sleep trained (she was 6 months old) and then I would do her night time routine and give kisses after the lullaby, tell her I love her and night night and lay her down in her crib and shut her door and leave.

I sleep trained for nights and naps at the same time. That was my plan from the beginning when we decided we would start sleep training to go all in and reevaluate if it didn't work out, luckily for us it did. I plan to sleep train our next baby earlier. I waited until she was 6 months because I was terrified to sleep train and it was soooo much better than I could've ever imagined and it was one of the best things we ever did.

For sure nights before naps! It was soooo much easier to night train my son than nap train, I was glad to get one success there to get me through the longer nap training. And at least I knew he was sleeping well at night when his naps were bad.

There is a fb group called precious little sleep (also a website and book) that is really helpful. But based on what I've learned there I'd say:

Moving from swaddle to a merlin magic suit may be easier than going straight to a sleep sack or similar.

Definitely 100% absolutely do nights before naps. Self-soothing is a skill and it is much easier learned at bedtime than at nap time. Once nights are sorted, then you can deal with naps.

Just because you train for going to bed does not mean you train to have 0 night wake-ups. I think their advice is to expect them to sleep 5 hours from the time you put them down, and wake-ups after that you feed for. 4.5 months would be too young to expect a kid to go 12 hours overnight without eating probably.

As long as you can hear him well it probably doesn't matter if you have a monitor.

Training now v. waiting is really your preference. Sleep around 4 months is known to be awful so it may improve somewhat on its own. I avoid drama so I'd probably wait until you're in the new house to train, but you could do now.

If I was you (and this is only preference), I would first work on transitioning from swaddle to whatever you want baby to be sleeping in, and work on getting a solid bedtime routine ideally without nursing to sleep. There should be 20 minutes + between nursing and sleep. With my first I always did bath (on bath nights), pjs, boob/bottle, books, song, and then rock to sleep when she was little. Then when I sleep trained I just put her in her crib after the song. So I'd try to get the wardrobe and routine thing down first, then once you move go ahead and sleep train for nights, and when he has that down, do naps.

A few questions- would love feedback please....
4.5 month old sleeps in his crib in our room. Sleep has been off for 3 weeks now. Also we cause a lot of disturbance. We are moving in a month should i wait to move him or move him to another room here?

Nap train or sleep train first? I was thinking naps because it’s just him and I. Nights DH may interfere. I’m trying to teach him to self soothe. He started sucking thumb and mouth in hands. Breaks from swaddle so I was going to have him just wear comfy, safe sleep wear? Also, we have no monitors is that a problem? Sound machine works but i can hear very well and room isn’t far. Thoughts on what I should do first?

Trying to get schedule together since he’s been off with sleeping. I nurse to sleep so i would like to stop that during training. Burp well cause he wakes up with gas(gerd baby too). Trying to get him to sleep 1.5-2 hrs like he use to a month ago. He now naps for 30-45 mins. Wakes up every hour at night. Time to train? I don’t mind feeding in the motn but would like to see how this goes....

suggestions? tia
