hmm i don't know if nap training is the right answer right now since she's going to be starting daycare soon. you might be surprised though -- most babies sleep well in daycare. that was one of my biggest concerns because charlie was so trained to sleep in his crib, but he's been sleeping fine at daycare since day 1.

maybe hold off and see how she adjusts to daycare? who knows... her naps may sort themselves out!

thanks for the feedback! and thanks so much for the links, geekinheels!

her current schedule:

wake up at 6:30AM, breastfeed

by 7:30 she is rubbing her eyes and yawning. until two weeks ago this was when i put her down for her first nap. but now she fights it to the death and will cry for an hour until i get her. so two weeks ago i stopped trying to put her down.

she now takes her first nap at 9:30, after her 9 AM bottle.

Nap 1: 9:30 AM, wake up at about 10 AM. if I'm lucky, she will sleep until 10:30.

Nap 2: 1:30-2PM (probably closer to 2 PM). if i'm lucky she will wake up at 3 or later but she usually wakes up around 2:30.

i know that at her age she should be sleeping every 3 hours, so if she wakes up at 2:30 she should technically be sleeping again at 5:30. she used to take a short nap here to hold her over, but she has been fighting this last nap to the death. I come home at 6, so by the time i feed her, play with her for a little while, and start the bed routine, it will be about 7-7:30 PM.

She literally went from four naps to two all at once, and she looks constantly tired. Should i just keep her up for those 4-5 hours before bedtime? or should i keep trying to put her to bed at 5:30? unfortunately because of my schedule i can't really put her to bed for the night earlier. she will also be starting day care in two weeks, and honestly i feel like everything i've done until now is going to go out the window anyway, because they don't sleep train in day care. when I inquired about what they do about crying during naps while there are other babies around, they just told me that they play music and rock them until they're soothed, and pretty much just hope for the best.

can you just imagine the stress i'm feeling right now? lol

Claire's always been a crappy napper, and your daughter's sleep schedule looks similar to how ours was at 9 months (and even now, at 11.5 months).

At 9 months, babies should be sleeping about 14 hours total, but 1-2 hours more or less isn't too big of a problem IF your child doesn't seem overtired, or is not physically affected by it.

I wrote a LONG blog post about sleep training here: http://www.geekinheels.com/2011/02/25/sleep-training-how-we-did-it.html

And this is a great reference chart for recommended sleep/waketimes at various ages: https://docs.google.com/document/d/11GHo4keUb2TVJUlSL1kD6HQcEgaNFBmzoQoOzcpcyas/edit?hl=en&authkey=CPXE1bsO&pli=1#

And personally, my favorite resource for sleep training: http://community.babycenter.com/post/a5417415/how_to_successfully_teach_a_baby_to_sleep_-_3rd_ed.

Nap training is a different beast from nighttime sleep training, so the best of luck!

I have so much information to share about this.... a multi post series is in order!

but night + nap training was the single best thing we've done to preserve our sanity and happiness. seriously.

can you tell us what her current schedule is like?

My son has slept through the night since around 3 months old, but he was late being good at naps. It was mostly our fault, I worked and my husband stayed home and didn't want to nap train him. So when I stopped working at 6 months, I made it a priority, and I would say by 7 months I had a good schedule. I used the methods in Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child, and can't recommend that book enough! It is all about the schedule, consistency, and letting them cry it out. The crying part doesn't last long. I do the same routine (a meal or bottle, sleep sack, 2 books, rock, into crib) before each nap. The morning one is at 9 and the afternoon one is at 1. At first he would cry for a while and then maybe sleep 20-40 minutes. Pretty soon he wouldn't cry, but would wake up after 45 minutes EVERY TIME. That darn 45 minute intruder! But no matter what, whether he did sleep some or cried the whole time, he stayed in his crib for one full hour. By 8 months he was taking at least an hour nap each time, gradually getting longer. Now at 10 months he takes 1/5-2 hours in the morning, and 1-1.5 hours in the afternoon. He only does two naps and he goes to bed at 6:30 pm and sleeps until 7 am.

I hope this helps. I was super frustrated with the nap stuff. It was one of my biggest challenges, so I would say get that book, and just stick with it. It is hard, but once it finally works it is SO worth it! Feel free to email me:

My son was the same and I was really, really jealous of the moms who got a 1-3 hour break during the day. I never thought it would happen but it magically did, right around 14 months. I think with all the running around, he just started tiring himself out more. I wouldn't believe it if I hadn't seen it with my own eyes.

I feel your pain but the good news is... hang in there... it'll happen sooner or later!

my daughter is an awesome night sleeper and pretty much starting sleeping through the night at 4 months. however she is a terrible napper! no matter what I do to try and nap train her, she still cries bloody murder and it is a battle to get her to sleep an hour. she's now almost 9 months and i don't really see a light at the end of the tunnel.

her naps are usually about 45 minutes long and it's really rare that she naps a full hour and a half to two hours. she's been taking 4 naps a day until recently she has been down to two naps, for a total of max 2 hours sleeping a day (two 45min -1 hour naps). she goes down at around 7-8 depending on the time of her second nap, and she wakes up at 6:30. this means she is probably getting about 12 hours of sleep and i know that is not nearly enough sleep for a 9 month old (or, 8,75 month old)

does anyone have any tips for napping? what were your baby's sleeping schedules at 9 months?
