Sometimes you have regression when they are sick, you travel and change time zones or hit a milestone. You may have to retrain, but the period is shorter.

@Red: Yeah, for sure, just knowing that LO is getting better sleep totally makes me feel like I've moved mountains. I think the nap-training process is going to be very tricky for us, though. But I'm going to keep at it!

I time my day around LO's naps too. Believe me, everyone is happier when the baby is well-rested.

BTW, re-training after they've been sleep-trained for a while isn't that bad, it's more like a refresher course.

@Mrs. Bee: Oooh, okay, I see.

So after your four nights of training, if ever Charlie cried, did you still do your checks? Or is the expectation that he would find a way to soothe himself back to sleep however long it would take him?

We've been nap training and night training as well...we went out for the first time today and missed his last two naps and it was quite tough to get him to stay asleep at bt....I think I can stay at home and hold off on errands until we are confident about his sleep. He has been so much happier since the training...I still feel guilty tho...

most people have to retrain because sickness, travel, etc. can throw off sleep. both times we retrained it only took one night and it wasn't bad at all. i think the first time we had to retrain was after a trip to la + an extended sickness when he was 13 months old, then again at 19 months. charlie knows he's supposed to sleep and gets back on track really quickly. :-)

@Mrs. Bee: WHAT?!?! You had to re night train? TWICE?!?! Whyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy??? (Can you hear the whine?)

Also...Yeah, the nap training is DEFINITELY harder, I can tell. I really hope my motivation remains high.

post nap training we always came home for charlie's naps. he took 3 naps a day until 9 months, 2 naps a day until 15 1/2 months, and he's been on 1 nap a day since. we timed activities so we would be home for naps until he was 9 months. after he was down to 2 naps though, it freed up a lot more time for activities. charlie also started napping in his stroller. i didn't like him to nap in his stroller because crib naps are more restorative so we were usually home, but he did nap in his stroller once in awhile.

i was so protective of his sleep... probably obsessively so, but he has been so well rested post sleep training, has slept thru the night, and though we've had to re night train twice, i don't think he's really ever had a problem with naps again.

nap training was really brutal. so much harder than night training. but sooooooo worth it. even to this day charlie is an excellent napper. we give him a bottle, put him in his crib and he puts himself to sleep. he usually sleeps 2 hours, but can even sleep up to 4 if he's tired and we let him. he's also been an excellent napper in daycare since his first day there.

it won't be easy i'm not gonna lie, but it has definitely been one of the best things we've done to preserve our sanity, and ensure that charlie is well rested!

Wow, thanks! My nap-training got screwed up today because we went to church during her napping time. I had a feeling that I would be prisoner to her schedule. But I'm starting again tomorrow - baby needs her sleep!

we were a prisoner for at least a month. you're supposed to stay home for awhile after nap training to make sure that they get it. for a long time after nap training charlie couldn't sleep in his stroller. we just worked our schedule around his naps. it wasn't that bad. eventually he started to nap in his stroller, even his tricycle! now we can get him to nap in the car, stroller any time we want, and he can stay asleep for over 2 hours.

i would try to stay home as much as possible in the beginning, and then try to see if she'll sleep in the stroller in a couple of weeks.

I just try to be at home when it is nap time. I have a window either between 11 and 2 or 4 and 6 where I can get stuff done as needed. Otherwise, I send my husband or it waits until I can get to it on Friday, when I have a sitter.

We purposely won't nap train for this reason. I need a kid that can fall asleep anywhere during the day and so far he's not having a problem.

My son did fine when we were out and he needed to nap - he would fall asleep in his carseat and then we'd either hold him or push him in the stroller while he napped.

If he fell asleep for less than his normal 1.5 hour naps then we would place him in his crib when we got home.

A few times he would get over tired if he slept for 45 minutes while we were out and didn't finish the rest of his nap. But he'd usually just make up for that in his second nap or at night.

We are a slave to their sleep schedule as well, once it was established. We just worked around it. Honestly, it was easier that way because once they're trained and on a fixed schedule, it was easier for us to plan. As they got older, then we allowed for flexibility once in a while knowing that it wouldnt mess with their internal sleep clock.

We were unable to run errands during nap time. We had to be home. The only exception was if we were in the car, but as soon as the car stopped he would wake up, so he would have shorter naps. For us, him napping was more important then running errands, because he was a horror without a nap.

After you nap train, then you are a a bit of a prisoner to their schedule. However, a lot of kids are able to nap in their strollers at their usual time! We would often do that with Charlie when we had no other options. He usually didn't sleep as long, but was generally fine.

So, LO is night and nap training and things are going as well as can be expected, I suppose.

My question: Once baby is nap-trained and has learned to fall asleep, how does it affect the running of errands? If I'm out and about with baby and it's clearly her nap time, will she have learned to just sleep?
