I'm having the same issues. Great night sleeper, but his naps suck. I've started to gently nap train him by going into reinsert his paci when he starts fussing. I'm not against using CIO (a modified version of it...), but at this point (10 weeks old), it's too soon for him imo.

@LouLouBelle: nap training definitely doesn't mean CIO. We really just tried to keep a consistent schedule, and when she woke up from her nap, i'd try and put her back down to sleep right away. It'll take time, but you'll get there soon!

Thanks ladies. I didn't mean I was going to do CIO; guess I didn't realize that's what 'sleep train' meant! Just looking for help/suggestions to get better w/out using CIO. I will try a strong routine every day and let her fuss for five min or so, and keep hoping she gets better!

I have the same issue! LO is 10 weeks and an awesome night sleeper, but will usually only nap in my arms. Sometimes if I put on the Civil Wars cd (it sounds kind of lullaby-ish) he'll sleep for an hour in the pack 'n' play.

3 months seems too early for CIO. Unfortunately cat naps are very common for babies as young as yours. I also have a 3 month old, and she never naps for more than 30 mins at a time either. I can get her to have enough daytime sleep if I manage to get her down for 5-6 catnaps each day. It's super annoying, and I will she would take fewer longer naps. But for now we're just going with it and hoping that she'll start taking longer naps on her own in the coming months. Otherwise, we'll probably nap train at a later date.

there isn't much out there in terms of nap training resources unfortunately. there is a good amount on night training, but i found most of what i learned about nap training by talking to real parents.

you don't have to go all hardcore crying it out, so you can definitely start practicing good sleep hygiene at 3.5 months.

set up a strong nap routine that you do the same every single time. babies thrive on routine, and she will know it's naptime. try putting her in the crib awake after the routine. she may surprise you and put herself to sleep!

if you're ok with a little bit of crying, maybe cap it at 3 minutes. that's what i did with olive and it worked beautifully, but she was a older (7.5 months adjusted).

give it a try and see what happens. every baby is different!

I sometimes don't know what is better, a good napper or nighttime sleeper! Try The Baby Whisperer, and the Weissbluth book mentioned above. 3 months is not too young to nap train.

Sleep begets sleep so if she can nap well she will sleep well at night and vice versa. With that said, she is at an age where short naps are super common and you should do what you can to maximize daytime sleep so she isn't overtired come bedtime. A baby that sleeps well at night needs to sleep during the day too. :)

I know Weissbluth (healthy sleep habits, happy child) recommends that if/when you nap train to try the first nap of the day since they are most tired then. Once she gets the hang of napping then you can try the other nap times. I don't think 3 months is too young to get her to start napping in her crib / independently but it is too young to expect any sort of consistent napping patterns.

Wondering if 3 mos. old is too early to start 'nap' training - if there is such a thing? And if so, do any of you have any good books/websites/resources for it? LO is an amazing nighttime sleeper and knows how to put herself to sleep at night. She nurses for 10 or 15 minutes and goes right to sleep. She wakes up often throughout the night and gets herself back to sleep sucking her thumb/fingers (her crib is in our room and we hear it all.night.long!). She goes anywhere from 7 hours to last night she went 11 hours straight in her crib!

BUT she will NOT nap longer than 30 minutes in her crib during the day. She will nap an hour in her swing (but obviously we don't want to make that a habit), and will nap forever in our arms. Any ideas? Is 3 months too young to try to nap train her to nap a few times a day? Or am I doomed to have a baby who doesn't nap because she sleeps so well at night?

I am going to be a work-from-home mom starting in september and I NEED her to nap for at least an hour a couple times a day so I can do some work!
