We swaddle weaned first, then night sleep trained, then nap trained. Each took about a week or two and I didn't start on the next until the last one was going well.

I dont' think this will work with LMW though, because she is incredibly stubborn and a much worse sleeper than WJ was. We'll probably have to do swaddle weaning and sleep training all at once. it's gonna be brutal :(

The only time I really noticed her startling was as I was laying her down if I didn't support her just so. She rarely startles mid-sleep at this point. So whether it's truly the moro reflex, or just her awareness taking over I'm not sure, but it didn't seem to be an issue for us. It was mostly just her pawing at her face that we had trouble with.

@LAGS: Did your LO still have the Moro reflex? I think my LO may still have it since she sometimes jolts in her swaddle when I put her down, usually its enough to wake her or make her stir.

Ya. Usually I would rock her until really drowsy, then place her in her crib and kind of hold her arms in place and wiggle her until she was asleep. It just helped keep her arms/hands from disturbing her in the beginning. Eventually it got to a point where I didn't have to pin her arms, but she always tore her paci out and couldn't replace it which was a pain.

LO is 6 months on sat. and we started sleep training last week. We weaned her from her swaddle probably about a month ago? I would have done them closer together, but it took me a while to get to a point where I was ok/desperate enough to try CIO.

I definitely agree with C.Sassy that you have to see whatever method you choose out for a week or more. Fortunately for us, night #1 went well so it gave me the confidence to be consistent and keep going. Her sleep has GREATLY improved, but still some nights/naps are better than others, so it's still a work in progress. Also, someone else had mentioned it to me from HB and it's been especially true for naps, the more tired they are, the longer they'll cry.

@LAGS: So when you weaned from the swaddle, you still rocked/jiggled/paci your LO one to sleep? How old was your LO when you weaned and sleep trained?

Thank you so much for posting!

I second trying the swaddle weaning separately too. When we started sleep training, falling asleep without being jiggled or rocked and without a paci was a pretty big change for LO. If she was freshly weaned from a swaddle, I can imagine it would have been a little much for her. We attempted weaning but eventually found going cold turkey from the swaddle worked best for us. It took a little while helping her go down without hitting herself, but eventually she figured it out.

For sleep training, we started with night time and did gradual extinction. I figured I'd start it then because I had a better chance of her being rested for naps the next day (assuming she had a better night's sleep after CIO - which she did). We then did CIO for all naps the next day and the longest she cried (first nap) was 18 mins. The night before was ~40mins.

@mamajaja: I had a complete swaddle addict - at 4 months we decided to wean since sleep wasn't great at that point. We did one arm out one night but that very day he learned how to roll. So I quit the swaddle cold turkey. His sleep improved within a week and got even better than before the swaddle days. Once they learn to roll they are ready for no swaddle! Maybe try the no swaddle for a week and then when she's used to that try sleep training?

@winniebee: Yeah, i'm starting to lean towards separating the two. I thought she was ready to be weaned from the swaddle since she's been breaking out of them so much and trying to flip over in them during the night, but may have to ease her into it.

I did try swaddling with one arm out, but she immediately rolled over and got stuck. :/

Awww, sorry!

Maybe try weaning from the swaddle first and then nap training? I know it took a while for my LO to get used to the no swaddle business. It was probably a few weeks after that we started letting him cry before naps/night sleep.

I don't have any advice as to which method you should use, because we're trying to figure that out ourselves. (We doing our own version of the Baby Whisperer's pu/pd and shh/pat, I think) I just wanted to throw out there that consistency is key. At this age (my LO is 6 mos too) they're aware enough to know that whatever is going on is not like it used to be. However, their memory is still so short that they have a hard time processing it in just a few days. Whichever method you choose, stick with it for a week or two at least. A wise friend once told me that the first 3 days of any transition is the worst. So far, she has been right.

And if it makes you feel any better, my LO doesn't do very well with me in the room either. 90% of the time it just gets her more worked up. I only go in if things are getting crazy. So, I end up letting her cry a bit. Sometimes she does fight it for over an hour. When it takes that long, though, I'm usually in there several times to calm her down.

LO is 6 months, and we tried to wean her from her swaddle and nap train her at the same time today. It was an absolute failure, and I'm feeling guilty because I think it's mainly my fault.

LO woke up at 6:48 am this morning, and we did our usual feeding and some play, then I started getting her ready for her nap at 8:20 am. We sang our song, and I rocked her for a minute, then I placed her in the crib and she was ok at first, then she just started crying, and scooted herself to the edge of the crib, banging her head a couple times trying to get to me. She cried for the whole hour, so we tried to console her, fed her a little more, and then tried the process again about an hour later. This time she played a little in the crib and even put her head down a couple times, then after about 15 minutes of play she started crying again and accidentally banged her head hard on the crib again. I felt so bad! So i finally picked her up to calm her down. Then after a little bit, swaddled her and rocked her to sleep. Did I just cause a bigger confusion in her brain now? I don't think I was ready to deal with the emotions today, such a mommy fail.

My plan was to start swaddle weaning and nap/sleep training today, but I think we may have to postpone for a bit. One thing I noticed was LO stopped crying for a bit after I flipped her back on her back, as she hasn't quite mastered rolling tummy to back, but rolls back to tummy every second she gets. Maybe she got stuck and was crying even more? Should I wait until she is able to roll back and forth? Our pediatrician told us it was ok to start now even, she actually told us we should start weaning the swaddle now and teaching LO to fall asleep on her own.

Should I have started with sleep training at night first instead of naps?

How did the rest of you train your LOs? I've been teetering between extinction and the Sleep Lady's shuffle (which I tried today), but seeing how she gets with me in the room, I may have to either try the Ferber method or complete extinction next.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
