Success on the second nap! DH is in his room right now just in case, but so far, down for 15 minutes. Here's hoping this is a good, long nap. He's so darn tired today.

For everyone else, I only hope that this can get better for us all. Just b/c I have success for this one nap doesn't mean I'm going to be successful tomorrow. Here's hoping, but in the meantime, keep sharing what's working or isn't working! I'd love to hear!

Just now, we tried unsuccessfully to put him down first. He was awake and cooing in his crib which turned into all out screaming. When DH went in, it turns out that he pooped. Changed him and tried again...DH rocked him until he got sleepy, put him down, turned him on his side and patted his butt until he was out.

Ugh this thread scares me! LO is 12 weeks and now refuses to do drowsy but awake and can't stay asleep longer than 25 minutes in his crib if he is put down asleep.

We have this problem too (only will nap being held). I don't have an answer except to keep trying to put down. I know last week I gave myself a break and stopped trying to get her to. Sleep in her crib because it was miserable for me and her.

@regberadaisy: I'm so sorry you're still going through this at 7.5 months! I keep telling my DH that I don't want him to be like this forever, and he keeps saying, "You're right, we'll have to rock him to sleep at 10 years old. See how ridiculous that sounds??" But I feel like if we don't break the habit now, it's just going to get worse. And we do have one friend whose 2 year old still won't go to sleep without being rocked...and I don't want to be in that situation!

@2PeasinaPod: my daughter is almost 10 months and her naps SUCK. She will wake up the instant I put her down. She hardly naps at daycare! But she started sleeping great at night time starting at 7.5 months.
I'm at a loss too. :( She will only nap on me. Daddy has been successful a few times getting her to nap in the crib. The awake time rule of thumb does nothing for her. Her naps are crazy.

So glad to know I'm not alone! I hope everyone's sleep issues get better with time as well!

@NerdBee: Good to know about the max awake times. He will usually go about 1.5-2 hours, but sometimes, he's awake for longer. And by then, he's probably overtired! And I'll try that technique for his next nap. He's eating now and is probably exhausted from not sleeping all day, so I'm sure he'll be a treat tonight ;o)

How long are your Lo's awake times? At 4-5 months, max awake times between naps should be 1.5-2h. Usually when I put LO down for naps within the max recommended awake times, he goes down pretty easily. My issue is how long he stays asleep! :p

I've never tried this but I've read about the following technique for nap training:
1) go through nap routine and put LO down before max awake time
2) let cry for 1 hour max
3) pick up, soothe, play quiet activity (nothing too stimulating)
4) put back down within 1 hour of pick up

I've read that baby will usually go down easily the second time. Hope that helps! Good luck!

@MsLipGloss: Because M is gaining weight very well and is a generally happy baby our doc is really against putting her on meds. Especially because we believe her issues stem from her food intolerances. For now she is at least an excellent night sleeper (consistently ten hours straight) but if things get worse we will definitely be considering Zantac or Prevacid. I'm so glad it's helping BabyGloss!!

@MamaMoose: We just saw a Ped GI specialist on Friday (BabyGloss has reflux too) and got a prescription for Prevacid. Friday night was the first time LO slept more than 45 min in a row after we put her down for the night. She made it 2 whole hours, and that hasn't happened since around 12/14 weeks!

Luckily she does great at night. Sounds like yours does, too, so naps have to be right around the corner :)

I have an almost three month old who is also a terrible napper. She will not nap in her crib for anything. I go back to work in three weeks and I'm terrified that she's basically not going to sleep all day at day care since obviously the teachers can't hold her constantly. I have no advice but just wanted to sympathize with you and let you know you're not alone. Oh.. And my LO has reflux and within about 5 minutes of beig left alone in the crib she is beyond hysterical and pukes all over the place. Hang in there, I'm sure it will get better for both of us!!

At this point, I truly believe that most moms exaggerate (at least slightly) the amount of success they have with nap/sleep routines . . . sort of like they are trying to pass a test (even though one isn't being given!).

When my LO is awake (and not fighting her nap/sleep), she is an angel. :D

Have you tried not doing any checks at all or replacing the pacifier? When we sleep trained and nap trained, we didn't go in for checks unless it had been over a specific amount of time (for naps, we set an hour I believe) and we never went in to replace her pacifier. She taught herself how to replace her pacifier during this time and now naps really well in her crib as long as she's tired enough.

I do know what it's like to have to hold LO for every nap though and it's nice to have the cuddle time but it is so hard to just sit there during every single nap!

*Augh* Mommy guilt. No worse torture has ever been invented!

I will also say that my LO's already crappy sleep patterns regressed during weeks 16-19 . . . which I didn't think was possible. Now, with new meds (for her reflux), I think we are starting to turn the corner. But it has been a s-l-o-w, exhausting process.

ETA: I didn't want you to think you were the only one!

He'll be 5 months in a week. And I know I'm getting ahead of myself, but I just have a ton of friends with babies who seem to have great nappers. And if he would even just nap in his crib for even a half hour, I would be overjoyed, but he won't even stay down for 5 minutes.

And I know I'm frustrated b/c I just listened to my poor son scream for an hour and a half and I feel guilty. Damn you mom guilt!

@2PeasInAPod: How old is your LO? I bet he's not spoiled. :) Sounds like he could just be going through growth spurt/ wonder week, teething, etc., something that is throwing off his ryhthm?

FWIW: My LO (5.5 months) is a terrible napper too. She really only naps while being held/worn. I think we (moms) sometimes expect too much from our LOs because we know other babies do it (nap) and it makes us feel as though we are doing something wrong because our baby doesn't. I know that's how I feel sometimes.

My LO is also a terrible sleeper (silent reflux)-her longest stretch ever has been 4.5 hours which has only happened a few times.

@MsLipGloss: I put him in drowsy and then try to turn him on his side and pat his butt to go to sleep. That had been working for me up until about a week or two ago. Now, the second I put him down, he's wide awake and tries to roll back towards me. He usually sleeps on his side. Our dads try to rock him and put him down when he's already asleep when I told them that doesn't work...so I have a feeling he's getting used to that and starting to get "spoiled".

Our LO still doesn't take great naps for us. The only time he does nap is when you rock him and hold him. And that's really starting to get frustrating. There are times we can put him down in his crib and he'll stay there, but as of late, no go. We put him down at night and he cries for maybe 10 minutes and goes to sleep shortly after for the night (10-7).

I just tried nap training for the 4th day in a row, and I was standing firm this time. I did not want to pick him up. He cried for an hour and a half with me going in for checks and replacing his pacifier. I finally relented when he threw up from crying so hard.

I don't know what to do anymore. We can't keep holding him for naps. He goes down for a nap for my friend who watches him on off days during the week, but will not go down for my FIL or my dad when they watch him. And he now will not go down for my DH or me anymore. I know we need to be more consistent, but I thought we could try to break him of rocking over the weekend. Today's nap was just a huge fail.

I'm not sure what I'm looking for with this post, I'm just frustrated and needed to vent. I picked him up after he puked and my FIL has him now sleeping in his arms...again. We tried putting him down 3 times and he woke up screaming the second he hit the crib.
